2019-20 D-III games / scores

If the first rounds were out East in this scenario there still wouldn’t be any QF flights.

Swap GAC/RF vs Aug/EC with End/Midd vs Nor/Platts and you don’t have any QF flights.

However with the current rankings, it does make more sense for the first rounds to be out west.

Of course the intelligent thing to do is take 5 grand of the multibillions they are about to make off Basketball and fly the Adrian/Elmira winner in a QF matchup.

If they use PWR for seeding your swap would put the top 3 seeds in the first round and I don't see why they'd do that. Both first rounds were out east last year, they shouldn't hesitate doing it to the west if the field and the travel restrictions make it necessary.

The cost of flying a travel party of 28 will be more than $5,000.00, but otherwise I do agree, but the NCAA is really inflexible about those rules.

Re: 2019-20 D-III games / scores

Middlebury and Amherst scoreless after 2.

Elmira and Manhattanville scoreless in the middle of the first

Edit: Amherst takes a 1-0 lead at 17:29 left in the third. #2 for Amherst got a breakaway and the Midd defender who arrived first couldn't clean up the rebound from Han's save and Wong scored the rebound.

Valiants and Soaring Eagles scoreless after 1.

Edit 2: Leidt tips one in to tie the game at 1 with 13:51 left. Amherst scores on the next shift 13 seconds later to make it 2-1.

Amherst holds on for the 2-1 win. They take the Pool A and Middlebury will be the third Pool C (likely the first or second depending on how this shakes out in PWR).

Elmira and Manhattanville is now a win or go home contest.

Manhattanville gave up the first goal but just scored two quick ones to make it 2-1 mid 2nd period.

Edit: Valiants score again! 3-1 lead on the Soaring Eagles

Edit 2: Elmira makes it 3-2, scoring on a power play that remained after a 5 on 3 expired. End of 2nd period came shortly after. SOG 26-11 in favor of Elmira.

Edit 3: Elmira tied it at 3 in the third. Currently 7+ mins left in the 3rd period.

Edit 4: UCHC POTY Emma Crocker puts Elmira ahead with a snipe from the slot. 6 mins left in the 3rd period.

Re: 2019-20 D-III games / scores

Elmira completed the comeback and finished off Manhattanville 5-3.

With today's results the field is:

Pool A's:
CHC: Endicott
MIAC: Gustavus Adolphus
NCHA: Adrian
NEHC: Norwich
NESCAC: Amherst
NEWHL: Plattsburgh
UCHC: Elmira

Pool C's:
Middlebury
UW-Eau Claire
UW-River Falls

I think the bracket will shape up to:

First round:
Norwich @ Amherst
GAC @ River Falls

QFs:
Norwich/Amherst @ Plattsburgh
Endicott @ Middlebury
GAC/RF @ UW-Eau Claire
Adrian @ Elmira

I think you're right on the money. With Elmira in, it took all the potential different scenarios out of play as Adrian and Elmira have to meet.

Re: 2019-20 D-III games / scores

Any idea on if Eau Claire or Endicott will be treated as the 3rd seed and potentially avoid Plattsburgh until the championship?

Endicott has the better RPI, which means (since the two teams didn't play in the regular season) that Endicott would take the head to head comparison with UWEC.

Re: 2019-20 D-III games / scores

Sour grapes here but River Falls and Gustavus playing first round seems unfortunate. I’m sure many other teams can say the same thing in previous years.

Edit: It’s not a perfect system but the top 9 teams in Pairwise got in the tournament, so I should quit complaining.

It's unfair but so was Plattsburgh being in the first round as the 2 seed last year, and they made it work.

If a program is going to be the champions, they have to beat whoever is in front of them.

Good question. PairWise rankings continue on through the quarterfinals, don’t they? If so, a lot can still change before the Final Four is determined. If not, Endicott would get the nod, but that’s only meaningful if they win their QF.

Somebody let me know if I have it wrong about PairWise still being fluid through next weekend. Thanks.

My understanding is that once they have the conference call to determine seeding and the bracket, the seeds are what governs and not any changes to PWR from the first round games.

PWR may still be calculated but the bracket will be the bracket.

That makes sense. Thanks.

As soon as the tournament is set, the brackets are set. There is no "reseeding." All NCAA tournaments use fixed brackets (unlike the way most league tournaments are run). You can calculate the RPI and PWR, but it won't change who plays who once the tournament starts.

As Prof said, the bracket is fixed. Once the pairings come out, everything is fixed except who hosts subsequent rounds. Since the field is so small, for D3 women's hockey, the only things up in the air are who hosts the final four, or if all four first-round games are in the same pod, who hosts the quarterfinal in that pod.

Re: 2019-20 D-III games / scores

Seems to me like they threw Adrian and Elmira in Plattsburgh’s side as a way to even things out with them both going straight to the quarterfinals. I could be wrong.

Curve ball: Amherst and Norwich in the play-in game to then play Plattsburgh. Adrian v Elmira in QF to fill out the top half of the bracket.

RF v GAC in the play-in game everyone expected. Middlebury v Endicott in other QF.
