2018 USA Olympic Women's Hockey Team

Re: 2018 USA Olympic Women's Hockey Team

It will be a happy day for me to see team USA without lamergoons. That penalty shot made me say some naughty words.

Re: 2018 USA Olympic Women's Hockey Team

Shouldn't the NBC TV announcers have known that, and explained it to us all? They went on and on about how offside the play was (I didn't think it was clear-cut at all, and likely would not have been overturned).

Come on now...

Why was JLam effing around with a between the legs showboat move on a penalty shot down 2 against Canada in the Olympics

I saw this live and thought the same thing. It's not an All-Star Game and there are no judges to give her bonus points for form and creativity. She outsmarted herself there trying to be cute.

It was the second most baffling play, behind not challenging the offsides.

Even if Stauber agreed with you that it was a closer call than all of us saw, the risk/reward of getting the goal taken off the board was worth a 2 minute minor if it didn't work out. He should have challenged.

Sounds like a good way to turn one goal against into two.

Re: 2018 USA Olympic Women's Hockey Team

Did it look offside to you live?

It looked "really close" live. It looked "really close" on the replays during the live broadcast. and it looks "REALLY close" on the full game replays available at the NBC web site that I just looked at again.

"The call on the field stands".

Obviously going to agree to disagree with you on that and my guess (And I could be wrong) is you didn't consider it offside live. Too busy following the puck on the stick of an ex-badger...;)

Here's a less unwieldy version of the video than the 'full game replay'. I see the puck on the blue line, and a skate that may or may not still be touching the blue line. REALLY close.

If I'm Stauber, I sure as heck don't challenge if I'm gonna get a penalty for doing so!

Agreed, but it's a value judgement. I'm of the opinion that in a game like this being down 3-0 and 2-0 are close enough in terms of how dire the situation is that it's worth risking making it 3-0 to challenge to keep it 1-0. Even if they lose the challenge they still have a fast, effective penalty kill so I still like their odds of it staying 2-0 through the penalty. Also factoring in that they were already through to the semis there's a lot more to gain than lose by challenging that play.

From the replays on CBC it looked to me that she was onside but it couldn't have been closer...a nano hair...but didn't see any white ice behind her blade. Panning down to get the closest view of Saulnier's skate and the puck in the same frame would have been great to see.

What I find even more interesting is someone here mentioned that Stauber said something to the effect that they "looked at that play". The definition of "looked" in that comment might open to interpretation since Cassie Campbell made a point of saying that the benches do not have the advantage of monitors to review plays before deciding whether or not to challenge any particular call.

So, which is it?

Re: 2018 USA Olympic Women's Hockey Team

Wow I could not disagree with this more

In the game last knight they had a few awesome transitions, but not a lot of sustained forecheck. Knight may be pressing or something, she seems more than mortal. On the back door last knight at the end of the game she tried to launch it to Mars instead of just tapping or wristing it in. Coyne is the best player in the tourney hands down.

Most teams in the NHL (and MLB for that matter) have video review experts up in a booth somewhere looking at replays (even if the benches also have access to video). They then radio down to the bench to suggest either review or not. I got to think the Olympic teams do the same.

I had just been praising them earlier in the day for finally giving up the thug life and playing hockey. Too cute by half, she is not TJ Oshie. I have also noticed a tendency to puck hog and I think they will look back one day and wish they could trade their play for a gold.

"last knight" ?!?! Crimmanies Bill, even his calendar has a badger bias :)

This I agree with.

Curious what you guys think of the USA defenders. I look at everything through maroon and gold tinted glasses so it's hard to be unbiased, but I think Pfalzer and Keller have been the best on the team. And I'm really happy to see Barnes look like she belongs.

Thanks for the link. I freeze-framed it a couple of times. Laura Stacey definitely looks offside to me. Another blown call by the referees.

Keller reminds me of Rachel Ramsey in that when she is good she is very, very good, but on occasion she will make an ill-advised pass or decision. But, like Ramsey she almost always is able to cover up for any mistakes she might make. I think she is the best all-around defender the USA has.

Coyne has so far played the best for the USA, but I sure like Hannah Brandt's play, especially several defensive gems.
