Re: 2018 Frozen Four Ticket purchase thread
Reading this thread it has become obvious that college hockey is just not as popular as it used to be. There was a small piece in the Boston Globe this past Sunday about NESN deciding to no longer televise Hockey East games, something that they have done since the league’s inception in 1985. Production costs were the reason. I can’t speak for other leagues but attendance in most HE arenas has been down last year and so far this year. Is this a trend?
Sorry to hear about the loss of NESN coverage. That news, combined with this thread, probably do reflect a discouraging trend. My observation is that, more than ever before, fans aren't willing to watch games unless they have a rooting interest.
For those of us who consider ourselves fans of the sport as a whole, that's tough to accept. I've long taken solace in the belief that were enough of us to fill an NHL Arena once a year. The 2018 lottery results to date certainly call that belief into question.
Hard times have befallen the sole survivors. Maybe our devotion to the Frozen Four is crazy. And regardless, we are growing old. But at least for a while longer, I'm going to remain Steely in my resolve.
Remember vividly the 2002 FF in St. Paul. The Xcel Center was jammed packed both nights,,obviously fueled by the Gophers being in it. With the drop off in attendance at Mariucci, I am starting to wonder if the games will be sold out, even if the Goofs are in it.
I remember 2002 very well. All these years later, it's still one of my favorite tournaments.
If the gophers are in it, tickets will be impossible to come by.
Tough ticket, yes. But these days there are a lot more avenues for accessing tickets on the secondary market. So not impossible.
A full assessment of the situation must also include the fact that a portion of the Gophers' fan base has become seriously disaffected by the change to B1G Hockey, and the ever increasing cost of tickets. Will that group of fans really come back for a Gopher Frozen Four? My guess is that some would, and some would not. If I'm right, that means a decrease on the demand side of the equation.
Putting all the above together, having the Gophers in the field should translate to a full building. But most likely no sellout, until the Gophers actually qualify for the FF.
We got a glimpse of this in 2011. Gopher fans were pessimistic that year. The event didn't truly sell out until UMD & UND qualified for then field. And I must say that demand in the 2018 Priority Lottery appears to be
much weaker than in 2011.
Want a great atmosphere at the 2018 FF? We'll need a lot of fans from the participating schools. The State of Hockey has 5 D-1 teams. UND, UW & MTU are an easy drive away, and have a long history with the venue. Without the Gophers, you'd need at least two teams from that list. Failing that, my prediction is a discouraging number of empty seats.
