2018-2019 Division I Commitments

Re: 2018-2019 Division I Commitments

Drama taking place at U of Missouri softball. Players complaining of lack of playing time. Other players defending the coach saying the roster was expanded for non-softball reason-i.e. coach was forced to by Mizzou admin for Title IX compliance reasons. Otherwise some players wouldn't be on the roster.

Are there softball players switching to Hockey? Not seeing the reason for this post? Or is this a jab a Minnesota for stacking talent?

If it is possible that for Title IX compliance reasons the Missouri softball roster is larger than the coach wants it to be, then this may be the case for some women's hockey rosters as well.

This was a new idea for for me, I thought it might be for others.

I was not pointing at any specific programs, just sharing the tidbit so anyone who wants to can add the idea to their hopper :)

They are limited in the number of scholarships which I would think they were already using.

There are many facets to Title IX it's not all about schollies. It's about equal treatment and opportunities. There are several ways to meet Title IX type issues. Based on some recent reading on the issue must schools do NOT meet Title IX fully.

I agree on what I have seen so far with Breza. If you want to watch Syd Breza this year you will have to do so at Shattuck-St. Mary's it sounds like.
Webster is probably the fastest, smartest, skilled 2002 forward in North America. Future USA Hockey Star for sure!
Wethington has to be the top rated 2019 grad D.
None of these 3 are in anyway a secret to the Top D1 programs.

I don't understand why a MN girl would go to Shattuck. Girls from outside the state need what Shattuck offers. Have her come to Chicago and play for Mission or Boston Jr Eagles if she wants to do AAA and get away from home. Shattuck is already stacked.

The vast majority of SSM's players over the years have not been from Minnesota, and those who do attend are typically from schools districts that don't have a strong program and/or play a strong schedule. Rather than attending one of MN's private schools that would make them a better player (through more challenging practices and schedule) a few do choose Shattuck, which plays twice as many games as other MN schools are allowed to play, over several more months, against (mostly) better competition. Also for those that choose this route (and unlike the Mission or Jr. Eagles) it does not require a move out of state, and it combines a private school education with all the hockey. But again only a very small fraction of MN's best players choose to go this route.

Boston Jr Eagles??!! They have one or two good teams in the brief history of the program and you're comparing them to the Mission and suggesting that people travel the country to join them? I think not. One or two good teams does not a program make....call me in 5 years and tell me their history then....

Well I feel any hockey player would benefit from what Shattuck has to offer although the commitment is not for every player/family.

1) Iconic School and hockey program with long tradition of success.
2) 7 month season with 65-70 weekend games against Top MN Elite, National and Canadian teams with daily weekday practices.(3 long holiday breaks)
3) Consistent quality coaching and teaching year after year.
4) High USA and D1 Hockey exposure all season long.
5) D1 Coaches can be more comfortable that players at Shattuck understand the commitment of a D1 type hockey/academic/boarding situation.
6) School is filled with like minded kids, coaches, teachers committed to success on ice and in classroom.

The 2 girls teams last season had 7 MN girls of 40 in which 4 were on U16 team(all 4 are National campers).
The boys teams have had many more MN players over the years past but many leave early due to boys having many more less expensive quality training options like Juniors and many place less value on the education side because of course they are all going pro.
Playing for Shattuck is a dream of many MN boys and girls hockey players and their families but the cost is a major deterrent preventing many more elite MN players from going there and there is only limited "need based" tuition assistance.

How about the, ahem, education? Girls will not be signing NHL contracts upon graduation and mostly will be entering the workforce.

Re: 2018-2019 Division I Commitments

Well, the school they ranked #6 has an ingrained institutional issue with the treatment of female students by male students that manifested itself in a conviction of a student last year, so maybe they are not the best evaluators....?

A student was convicted of a crime at a High School!! Must be the schools fault in todays no personal responsibility way of thinking! Close it down now!
GOOD GRIEF!

When it deals with sexual assault (by students or faculty) and the administration does nothing, yeah it is a cause for concern if I was contemplating sending my children.

Wayland Academy is #50! That's in the town I work in, 1 mile from where my office is. Pretty cool farmy old Dodge County in WI has a top 50 boarding school. It is a very nice campus. We have installed many storefront entrances over the years and they have really ramped up the building security very nicely in this regard. Many schools are severely lacking in main entry security and screening. There are schools I go to for work and some you can still walk right in any time of day and essentially go anywhere you want, others are locked, but you walk right up and they see you and let you in without first identifying who you are and why you are there. Crazy stuff in this day and age.

I'm sure you didn't take the time to google the events at St Paul's or you wouldn't have embarrassed yourself with this response. An individual random act would be one thing, but the St Paul's events were such that the administration knowingly and implicitly condoned a "ritual" for years that involved the senior boys keeping score of sleeping with the freshman girls that eventually manifested itself in sexual assault. Any boarding school that takes responsibility for students development away from home and knowingly allows this type of "tradition" to continue unabated for years does not belong on anyone's top 50 schools list.

Re: 2018-2019 Division I Commitments

While for 43 seasons St. Paul’s has enjoyed the competition, spirit of integrity, fair play, and camaraderie among the 16 member schools, the School chose to withdraw out of respect for league bylaws. Three merit-based scholarships offered to SPS students are in violation of an ISL bylaw prohibiting member schools from offering non-need-based financial aid. For this reason, and because of the School’s commitment to offering admission to students from many different backgrounds, St. Paul’s has elected to give up its ISL membership.
“Out of respect for the league’s prohibition of merit-based financial aid…St. Paul’s School is withdrawing from the Independent School League.”
The School’s withdrawal from the League will be effective in the 2017-18 school year. For the 2016-2017 school year, the School will maintain an ISL athletic schedule.

So it appears as though SPS withdrew instead of being booted for offering merit based scholarships.

I saw the article on the SPS website after reading this. Seems unlikely that SPS would withdraw from the ISL just to protect the opportunity to offer 2 scholarships to increase geographic diversity (1 was grandfathered). I think it is more likely the ISL members pressed for administration changes after the sexual assault trial (which SPS has steadfastly refused since they do nothing wrong) and they pressured SPS out of the league using the scholarships as an excuse.

Re: 2018-2019 Division I Commitments

We as in the Gophers or we as fans?

2 come to mind that the Gophers should be interested in.

Madeline Wethington - D Blake 2000 birthdate - Has the size and skating ability that the Gopher staff likes.
Makenna Webster - F SSM U16 2002 birthdate - Just turned 14 in March and is already an elite player.

One down one to go...

As Iceburg reports in the Minnesota thread via Wethington's tweet.

And of course, Wethington's commitment now makes it 15 U18 players coming in the next few years. Hockeysbest has to be in full meltdown mode by now. ;)

Quick follow-up - St. Paul's has now petitioned the court to release the sexual assault victim's name so that they can attack her in the media to rebut her lawsuit. For a school with lots of money and a pretty significant image issue, this just seems like arrogance gone amok.... I'm pretty sure based on this that the ISL wanted no more part of St Pauls.
