2017 Women's D-III NCAA Selection Thread

Not to be blunt...but it doesn't matter what you're in favor of. . I'd prefer a 16 team bracket on the men's side and a 12 team bracket on the women's side but it will never happen unless the NCAA makes DRASTIC changes to its postseason protocol.

I don't really think a 12 team tournament would be that good. It would protect top teams from an upset in the conference tourneys, but there aren't really 12 teams every year that are competitive enough.

I think they should make changes to the protocol. They make billions off of the bowls and the basketball tournament and they should spread that around better.

As they say in South Bend, "What happens in D-I, stays in D-I."

Also, IMO the top 4 teams would be playing at a disadvantage in the quarterfinal round. Hockey East got rid of tournament byes because the top 2 teams were losing a disproportionate amount of time after not having games to stay sharp.

The top 5 from the first USCHO Poll have remained in the Top 10 and Norwich & Lake Forest have moved up BUT what happened to St Thomas (9-10-3), Amherst (11-7-4) & Utica (14-8-1)?

The first poll of the year is really based off of last year. Utica had some good upsets last year. St Thomas won the MiAC last year, but seems many of the freshmen they had last year are having a sophomore slump...15 of their 21 players are freshmen or sophomores.

Looks like expanding to nine teams is going to be revisited again given yesterday's release from the NCAA.

This is much needed IMHO with the AQ pool about to expand.

Nice to see Gustavus get credit. They're the best team we played in MIAC all year. They have been on fire - haven't lost since Jan. 1 and are currently in first. The surprise team all year has been Hamline. Two great additions, the D1 transfer and the high scoring freshman, and they snuck up on people. St. Thomas playing much better of late, and might cause a problem in that playoff as their young players seem to be getting it. MIAC is improved over last couple years.

I was trying to think of who the 9th team would most likely be. You'd assume a western team if a 6-3 split or an eastern team with a 5-4 split. But then I was thinking about how much of a headache Adrian must be for the NCAA. Assuming they stay near the top, no WIAC or MIAC school is within the 500 mile zone from Adrian, (except Stevens point (489 miles)) So if you had a 6-3 split with Adrian, river Falls and a miac. You'd sssume the miac and river Falls would play the play-in game but youd have to fly the winner to Adrian. So even with a 6-3 the playin could still be out east if Adrian is in the mix.

You've forgotten that Elmira (and as they get better Oswego) is within 500 miles and we get the Adrian/Elmira matchup we had last year.

St. Norbert, William Smith (Hobart), Elmira, and Oswego are also in range of Arrington.

NESCAC fans aren't thrilled by Oswego, but they beat Plattsburgh. they are downright baffled by Endicott. The three they best are Bowdoin, Trinity, and Colby. They tied Wesleyan. How does a good record against the bottom half of the conference put them above Hamilton and Conn? Apparently all teams should play in a powderpuff conference they can beat up on and win a couple of games against middling teams in real conferences. At least Platty and Elmira play the cream of the crop out of conference.

How would that be done, an 8-9 play in game?

I'm really not a big fan of non-2^x tournaments. Not that I have a dog in this fight. JMO.

That's what they did when the men's D3 tournament went from 8 teams to 9 years ago.

Look on the bright side, that game would be played in Michigan... if Elmira gets in at all. Going by the rankings, they need chalk in the conference tournaments to be under consideration. According to the first ranking, they would be behind Plattsburgh, Norwich, Middlebury, and Adrian for Pool C. (I didn't include River Falls because they are the obvious Pool B team).

Forgive me for jumping in late, but does the no-conference-matchups-in-the-first-round thing still apply?

Because if it does, and it all goes chalk(ish), you'd have to fly a first-round game.

I believe, It does if you still avoid flights. So since that created a flight, they would likely avoid that situation. Even though it would presumably be the 5th time they'd play this year.

Why are we talking about Lake Forest getting in? They have not beaten any team ranked above #23 on karch. They are not good! 27th on SOS.
