2017 MLB Season - The Goat Memorial Thread

Re: 2017 MLB Season - The Goat Memorial Thread

I understand that, but that statement is misleading when applied to what we are talking about.

Agreed. Classic correlation/causation confusion (over a caucasian). They dipped but we have no idea what caused it. Kepler is right in that we would need to do an analysis of many players to make assertions like integration made white people suck.

And if you look at the major stat classes for WIlliams over his career, they didn't really dip. Most stayed relatively the same within his career bounds outside of his last three years when he was pushing 40.

So much for the Twins heating up at the right time. After winning 20 games in August, being within a game of the Yankees for the Top Wild Card spot, and leading the 2nd Wild Card spot by 2 games, the Twins have gone 1-4 in September (3 of the losses by 1 run), and are now tied with the Angels for the 2nd Wild Card spot. I have a feeling that Minnesota's next 5 games (1 @ Tampa, then 4 @ KC) will dictate whether they ultimately capture the Wild Card. If the Twins can go 3-2 (or better), I think they'll right the ship and be in the mix down the stretch. If they stumble and lose 3 or 4 of the next 5...well...then we might see a team that limps to the finish line and hopes for .500.

Sigh. I think you are the one who is confused. I was not trying to make any sort of causation argument Re: Ted Williams, and I made that perfectly clear...

Also, what's the point of making that assertion without implied causation?

I was refuting an assertion.

As for saying that Ted Williams' numbers didn't dip after 1950, look at my previous post (and Ted Williams stats: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/willite01.shtml). Outside his Home Run numbers, most every other major stat dipped considerably, including: Doubles, Triples, RBIs, Runs, and Hits.

Re: 2017 MLB Season - The Goat Memorial Thread

RBIs and runs are awful measures as they as much or more relate to the batters around you, and not you.

His avg, OPS, ISO, and many other stats that actually track productivity stay relatively stable.

Ted Williams may not be your best choice for a player to represent.... well, any other player. ;) For very top level players, the numbers probably changed a lot less than most players, because how many players - any race - can bump Ted Williams down from anything? The talent level getting higher is a big reason - besides overt racism - that many players did not want integration. They were afraid they'd lose their jobs, because frankly, they weren't that great at their jobs when compared to a broader set of talent. I can't imagine it can be statistically proven, because you'd have to quantify what was missing, pre-integration, and compare it to post-integration to allow for the differences, and quantifying the talent in the Negro Leagues is an age old problem. Whether it's willful ignorance, bad record keeping, or aging - it's hard for people to imagine what MLB would have been like if it was integrated, and it's certainly not quantifiable in any way I can imagine. Common sense, with a little knowledge about the Negro League, stands that the lower level or even average players in MLB would have been bumped out of the league by average or high level Negro League talent, thus raising the bar.

That's all well and good, but we both know that this attempt is futile if the goal is to come up with something statistically significant.

The purpose of my post was to refute the assertion that Ted Williams' numbers didn't dip after integration. They certainly did.

If Ted played today he wouldn't even get on base, so the game IS tougher today

Right?

Spot on.

Wonder how many times a team that is on pace to set the major league record for number of wins after 120 games looks as bad as the Dodgers have looked for the last two weeks? Since sitting atop the baseball world with a .719 winning % on August 20, they've gone 5-12, been shut out 3 times, lost by 5 or more runs 4 times and been outscored by more than 30 runs. Right now their post season chances look to be shaping up a lot more like the 2001 Mariners than the 1998 Yankees.

Ruth was up against a taller mound and a much larger strike zone.

Is Cleveland going to lose again? Ever?

A local window company did a deal where anyone who installed windows in July gets them for free if the Tribe rattles off 15 straight.

They have to be sweating now.

Typically, stores that have those type of promotions buy insurance in case the event actually occurs. My guess is the window company is rooting for it to happen along with anyone who had their windows installed in July. That way, they'll get to promote the heck out of it next season and have even more business.

Now, the insurance company is probably sweating it, but people never seem to care about the insurance company's feelings. :p:D:D

Similar thing on a larger scale actually happened in 2007.
