2017 MLB Season - The Goat Memorial Thread

Re: 2017 MLB Season - The Goat Memorial Thread

53 dingers for Stanton.

He's on pace for 63 based on his season-long averages. If we look just at his post-All-Star game pace (6.63 AB/HR), he would hit about 67.

If he gets past Maris, it will be interesting to see the narrative as to his stake to being the true Home Run champion. Stanton may also be a threat to 755/762 as well, but his history would suggest too many injuries to really challenge that number. That being said, if he averaged 45 HR/season for the next 10 years, he would be sitting just over 700 HRs at the age of 38.

If he hits one HR every 7 ab, he should hit 50 even in an injury shortened year. So with 500+ ab in a full season, he should have no problem hitting 75 a year.

Bonds, McGuire and that Cubs guy I have literally forgotten* get an asterisk for juicing. Stanton gets an asterisk for a juiced ball. Ho hum.

The record still belongs to Ruth. 60 in 154 (151), aided only by booze and whores the way Abner intended. Maris and Mantle can pound sand, too (although the Mick did his part with the booze).

* Sammy Sosa. LOL, what a joke. Most similar player to him at the age of 24: Curt Blefary.

Well, yes, but sustaining a 7 AB/HR pace over the course of a career would be astonishing. His career average is about 13.35 AB/HR, and over the past 4 years, it has been about 12 AB/HR. If he were to average 550 ABs/season, and keep his 12 AB/HR pace, that would average out to about 46 HR/season...which is why I used the 45 HR/season number. Now, if he would keep up the 6.63 AB/HR pace with an average of 550 ABs/season (around 82-83 HRs/season)...well, he would surpass Bonds' 762 HRs in about 6 years...at age 33. :p:D:D

Yeah, the problem with Ruth is that he hit 60 against a bunch of old white guys (i.e. pre-integration). Maris' 61 in 162 is far more impressive.

Personally, I recognize Bonds as the HR champ...warts and all. Is his record tainted? Of course, but he still hit the ball over the wall 73 times in a season. That being said, if Stanton were to hit 67 Home Runs, in a season when the next highest guy might not even reach 50...that would be awfully impressive.

He also did it in a beanball era with no batting helmet.

For pure impressiveness, nobody is going to beat Ruth in 1920. 54 HR in 458 AB. Second in the majors was George Sisler with 19. Ruth batted .376 and his OPS+ was 255.

He also won his only start.

Ruth's stats standing alone are impressive, and I'm certainly not going to argue against that. However, Ruth's stats are tainted because of his competition. Also, there is a whole other line of argument regarding the status of the Home Run in 1920 baseball.

I just don't buy that. At most we're talking about 10% of the population excluded, and that is bought back again by not having to compete with the NFL or NBA for athletes.

The meandering mean of homeruns does matter, though -- it is after all what debases current homerun totals.

Being the best is tainted because he's the best? That's kind of what you're arguing here. That he was too good, therefore we can't count it. It's standard deviations above the mean. That's how you measure greatness. Because the means and medians will shift, how high you stand above the shoulders of other men will be a better measure.

Fortunately, I'm not the one trying to sell Ruth (you are). I'm not sure on the % of non-white players who would have taken MLB spots. No one could ever know because they weren't given the chance. However, I do believe it is safe to say that there were many great pitchers who Ruth did not have to face due to segregation. I would also counter your second point by suggesting that the percentage of people in general who were actively seeking a professional career in sports in the 1920s more than offsets the lack of other major professional leagues (although the NFL did exist at that time).

A good piece on the issues of normalizing baseball data.

For example: if Hank Aaron plays his entire career using the normalized ratios of the 2000 Rockies, he hits 1004 career home runs.

Another fun measure of Ruth. In the three seasons prior to Ruth becoming a regular position player the major league homerun lead was 12, 11, and 11. In Ruth's next three seasons he hit 24, 54, and 59. His WAR for those three seasons equals Ken Griffey Senior's entire 19-year career.
