Third is Wilmer's natural position. He was blocked by Wright with us, of course, but during several of David's many trips to the DL we got to see Wilmer there. He seemed entirely adequate.

Really, really nice guy, too. Not a dry eye in the house when they finally pulled him tonight, and the fans knew from social media and gave him a standing O. Everybody here wishes him all the best -- we just have a surfeit of infielders and somebody had to unclog the lane.

Good luck with Wheeler. I hope he's fully recovered soon so you can see what a prize you got.

Hold your horses. Sandy Alderson is saying there is no deal, and there won't be.

Brewers didn't like the Wheeler medical report?

Evidently Terry Collin's presser made Nixon's tapes sound like an after-school special. Given the grotesque NYC media this is going to produce some quality back pages. :p

I didn't love losing Wheeler, even for GoGo. I guess we live to trade (or not) another day.

It will be fun to get the facts on what happened -- whether there was a contingent deal scuttled by medicals, or whether even that was all just rumor. Fun times.

Does this mean Hernan Perez is still our third baseman? ****.

I believe Gomez was told he was being traded, so it wasn't just rumor. Has to be the Wheeler physical. Would be kind of a double bummer for Mets fans. You don't get Gomez, AND there's something of concern in Wheeler's health.

Although only the Mets have been saying there's no trade, Flores was told there's no trade.. and the Brewers haven't said anything. Maybe the issue is on the other side? I can't imagine what.

Either way, I love some good deadline drama. This one really went above and beyond. :D

So was he crying during the eighth inning because he learned he was stuck in Flushing, NY? Does he hate the Mets that much?



*edit* Brewers mum on why it fell through, hinting that it could have been because of Wheeler's elbow. Scott Boras even joked when the deal was close that the Mets must have forwarded Wheeler's healthy elbow test results to the Brewers to get the deal done.

Mets mum also, but now word from those near their camp claim that CarGo's hip-flexor issue from a month ago could be worse than he's letting on.


Either way, Sandy Alderson and Doug Melvin will NOT be exchanging Christmas cards this year.

What a joke this has become now...Brewers reporters saying Wheeler medicals killed deal, mets saying Gomez hip/groin?

Horrible for all 3 players involved.

If I were the Brewers and Mets I would embargo further comment and just move on. No matter what they say it's going to get twisted around now, and there are plenty of wolves out there trying to use this for page clicks. Plus now Boras is involved because of the allusion to the Gomez medicals, and Boras does not suffer his clients to lose trade value.

The best thing about embarrassments is if you wait a couple days there will be another dumpster fire somewhere else that the jackals will all go howling over to. For now everybody involved just keep your heads down and do your jobs. It'll pass.

Well, they didn't keep their mouths shut.

Now the Brewers are saying the Mets made several different demands, including money for Gomez' contract, and Lagares instead of Flores, but the Brewers didn't bite, so the Mets needed an out and used Gomez' hip as an excuse. According to the Brewers, his hip is fine and his medical record is absolutely clean. I am sure Boras will not let this one go.

Lol Mets gonna Mets.

I liked the return from the Brewers perspective and didn't really understand why the Mets would make that trade (though I suppose they might be able to resign Gomez when he becomes a UFA).

Carlos Gomez and Mike Fiers are Houston Astros.

'Stros give up the following prospects: Outfielders Brett Phillips and Domingo Santana, left-hander Josh Hader and right-hander Adrian Houser.

Phillips was the Astros #1 prospect and the astros beat writers were surprised that they gave him up and I believe one the pitchers was #8, in the system.

I kind of wonder where the Richie Sexton trade still stands, if that is still paying dividends somehow?

To Arizona: Richie Sexton, Shane Nance, player to be named later (Noochie Varner).
To Milwaukee: Craig Counsell, Junior Spivey, Lyle Overbay, Chad Moeller, Jorge De La Rosa, and Chris Capuano

Counsell resigned with the Diamondbacks for two years after the 2004 season.
Spivey was traded to Washington for Tomokazu Ohka. (This opened up 2B for Rickie Weeks.)
Overbay (and Ty Taubenheim) was traded to Toronto for Gabe Gross, Dave Bush, Zach Jackson.
Moeller was DFA'd in 2006 and signed with the Reds as a FA in 2007.
De La Rosa was traded in 2006 for Tony Graffanino.
Capuano stayed the longest of this group, with the Brewers or their minor league teams through 2010. Also holds a personal record of 26 straight losses recorded in appearances from 2007 through 2010.

Gross was traded to Tampa Bay for Josh Butler.
Bush was allowed to walk as a FA.
Jackson was traded to Cleveland in the CC Sabathia deal. (to CLE: Matt LaPorta, Rob Bryson, Zach Jackson, Michael Brantley)

Tony Graffanino tore his ACL with the Brewers and signed as a FA in CLE.

Josh Butler was DFA'd.

Unless you mean the trade that brought Richie Sexson to the Brewers. If that's the case, then yes, the trade is absolutely paying dividends because that meant that the Brewers had removed Bob Wickman, Steve Woodard, and Jason Bere from their roster. :p:D

I was OK with the Mets trade, but this one is even better. I think all 4 guys are top 25 in the Brewers system, and 2 of them top 4. Plus, I like Houston, so I can still root for Carlos. Fiers is probably the young pitcher I'm most comfortable letting go.

Parra to the Os for Zach Davies (pending physicals :p), who is #3 in Baltimore's prospect list.

I'm a little confused with not trying to get a corner infield prospect in all of these deals?
You have to go all the way to 27 (David Denson @ 1B) on mlb.com's list of top 30 prospects for Brewers to find one that isn't an OF (10), SS (4) or pitcher (12).

Are we looking at the remainder of this year AND all of next year as "rebuilding" years, and in 2017 have all these prospects graduate to the MLB at the same time like the Weeks/Fielder/Braun era?

Or are these prospects who could be plugged into next season?
