2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

Well you may be forgetting that women's college beach volleyball teams have to wear actual politically correct, publicly acceptable, non-offensive uniforms, unlike the women's AVP pro beach swim wear competition, err I mean volleyball tour, which is basically the SI swimsuit edition with a white ball and a net added.

Oh. That is ****ty marketing strategy.

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

I tweeted the WCHA about 2016-17 schedules and they said: "By the end of next week. Finalizing a few remaining games. Thank you for your patience."

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

I'm hearing the reason for the schedule delay is changes to the playoff format are coming this season.

All 10 teams make the playoffs and actually having five teams in the WCHA Final Five?

I can see the schools wanting a fifth school hosting a home series.

I cannot see the additional revenue offsetting renting a building and associated costs in Grand Rapids, St. Paul, or wherever for a third day. Especially with the Final Five attendance numbers.

Now, making the winner of 4/5 play a double header may be an interesting twist! Three games on Friday, championship Saturday!

Any chance that Xcel Energy Center has asked to back out of the last year of the contract, so they're looking to revamp to something like campus sites?

The benefit of not having to ship two of UAF, UAA, UAH anywhere outweighs the money of an extra series. If they could find a way to have the bottom three miss the playoffs, I'm sure they would.

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

Any chance the schedule release being delayed is because one or both of the Alaska Hockey programs not having a team next year?

That would be a surprise...there was some steam about it earlier this year, but I'd think we'd have heard something in the meantime if that was happening.

I doubt it too but you never know, The changed playoff format could be because there might be only 8 or 9 teams in the WCHA in 2016-17. Definitely a turbulent time for UA and UAA fans which I feel bad for.

While UAH and UAA have been bad since the nWCHA started, UAF has been good and would've been a fine opponent in 14-15. Also, thanks for being a jerk.

Regardless of what happens down the road, adding or dropping teams, there is no point in adjusting this year's schedule to account for the future unknowns. The WCHA could also have 14 teams in 2018-19 but I think we would agree it would be dumb to make plans for that now. Deal with changes when the occur, unless something is already in writing for the future, then by all means feel free to plan for it now. I don't think anything happening in Alaska RIGHT NOW falls into that category. Now if there is something in the works with ASU that needs to be planned, then again, yes, do what must be done now.

This year gets us the final of the four-year rotation in opponents. I expect that they're pushing dates around. I wonder if the penalties for dropping the sport for 16-17 would exceed the budgetary shortfall (I'm thinking yes).

13`14 UAA went 18-16-4 (12-12-4), we lead against Ferris in the first "round" game of the Final Five. Ended our 20+ losing season streak, but since then yes we have been bad.

I'm sorry for forgetting that season. Thanks for bringing it up.

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

I'm hearing 8 team playoff, all campus sites, 3 weekends. At least first round best 2 of 3. Not sure about the semis & finals, but doubt they would want to see a team potentially play 9 games in 3 weeks prior to NCAA. I'll go out on a limb and guess quarterfinal & semis are best 2/3, with the Championship being a single game Saturday night at the top seed's rink. Also wonder what happens if building is unavailable since the 2 Alaskas, the 2 Minnesotas and Huntsville play in municipally owned buildings that may not be able to block out that extra weekend.

I've heard similar. Either a three-weekend playdown or the two-weekend tournament with the top seed hosting the final four. Depends on which costs less. I wouldn't be surprised if the three-weekend deal won out because they'd save a lot by cutting the conference schedule those two games. They'd get murdered if an Alaska team was ever good, but I think that's a fairly safe risk at this point.
