2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

Dilks posted today a list of the top 100 D1 prospects. nothing on who did the listing or based on what...but it's the slow season, so what the hell.

Nell is the #2 G (just behind Demko, just ahead of Petersen, Kasdorf, and Lindgren).

32. CJ Franklin-F-Minnesota State(Winnipeg Jets)
50. Chris Nell-G-Bowling Green(Free Agent)
57. Mark Friedman-D-Bowling Green(Philadelphia Flyers)
72. Teddy Blueger-F-Minnesota State(Signed by Pittsburgh)
78. Cliff Watson-D-Michigan Tech(San Jose Sharks)
83. Dominik Shine-F-Northern Michigan(Free Agent)
85. Casey Nelson-D-Minnesota State(Signed by Buffalo)

There was a detailed article on each group of ten done about a month again, those are his rankings.

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

You don't need to use your gut, 4-5 gets the league MSU & FSU...to get 3 teams in, you'd need 6-3 with most of those 6 by BGSU or MTU flipping 1 result somewhere plus MSU/BGSU going 4-5 in those games.

Don't confuse the NMU people with actual math.

Let's say Simon Fraser is serious about being an NCAA school. Let's say they join the WCHA, and let's say ASU does also. Comments?

Could that cut down on some travel costs?
I am thinking 3 "pods" of 4 for scheduling: (1) AA, AK, SF, ASU; (2) Bemidji, Mankato, Tech, NMU; (3) LSSU, Ferris, BG, AH
3x4 (home & away) in your pod, 4x2 away vs another pod, 4x2 home vs remaining pod = 12+8+8 = 28 conference games. That still only leaves 6 non-conference games for schools in years they do not visit Alaska (I think 8-10 is optimal).

Would ASU go for being placed with Simon Fraser and the Alaska schools? They are an outlier/will have to travel anyway...but, are there enough non-conference games for them to schedule "name" schools they probably want to build a fan base? Would they get 2 extra or 4 extra if playing at both Alaska's each year?

What would happen down the line if ASU left/WCHA went back down to 11 teams? Playing everyone 2x would be 20 conference games, and if each schools had 2 other "rivals" they played 4 times, gets you to 24 - not sure how to group/pair those though.

Simon Fraser would definitely help the Seawolves and Nanooks.

You wouldn't do it that way, you'd do at 2 home vs 2 of each pod to not require any team to go to ASU, SF, UA_, and UAA in the same year and that way every team would get at least 8 NC games but never have to go to Alaska twice except for SF and ASU

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

My personal opinion is it would be a huge change all over the NCAA because of recruiting. SF will be able to pick off many of the top BC recruits. Now on the face of it that is not such a big deal, but consider... ASU's whole plan revolves around recruiting in BC. I think they were planning on coming in and taking over. You have to remember that the athletic staff of schools like this are unbelievably arrogant.
They have the big name, the sun, blah blah. But this would be huge in that they can no longer rule the roost. Sure they say they are going to recruit all over the west, but the reality is, there are not enough players from California etc. I'd bet dollars to a donut they are picking off all the best recruits in BC right this minute. So this would really cause them problems.
It would also affect all those teams that recruit in western Canada. Quinnnipiac, PSU, quite a number of WCHA teams, not to mention Denver, CC, UND. it's a long list. So IMHO it would be really a huge change for a lot of people. In particular ASU.

The WHL is a much bigger threat to NCAA recruiting in BC than Simon Fraser or ASU.

AK, UAA, DU, CC, SFU, ASU = Far West Conference with room for expansion to 8.

Then combine NCHC & WCHA and spit out 2 conferences that make sense.

No way in hell Denver agrees to be that conference. Even though it makes sense...

Not if ASU pays "cost of attendance".
That will pay better than the WHL stipend.
And you can bet all the rich schools will be paying within the next few years.
That can of worms will be twisted and abused to ridiculous heights.

There are still only 18 scholarships for 25+ players...

Yes 18 for 25
1/2 1/4 scholarships
books only/tuition only
Lots of ways to divvy up 18
The can of worms being twisted and abused is a given.
Where it will stop is anyone's guess.

All I'm saying is that ALOT of players get less going the college route than the MJ route, granted MJ tries to do alot of things so you never get that money, but it is a bit of a fallacy to say that cost of attendance will change everything in college hockey when in reality, it's just a little extra cash but the vast majority of college hockey players are not getting free rides.

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

I seen the NCHC has released their composite schedule. That makes me wonder if anyone here has heard when the WCHA conference composite schedule will be released? It was released on May 4 last year so maybe it's not too far away.

I don't have an exact date, but it should be around the same time.

if they join, I vote for a conference name change to International Collegiate Hockey Conference.
Just to stick it to the Nachos.

Why leave the door open for them to one up us, let's just go with ICHC... Intergalactic Collegiate Hockey Conference.

This works especially if ASU joins. That gives us three Space Grant schools (UAH, UAF).
