2016 Summer Olympics - Ready or not, here we come!!

Re: 2016 Summer Olympics - Ready or not, here we come!!

Ryan Lochte and his mother say Lochte and and two other swimmers were robbed at gunpoint last night. IOC & USOC deny it.
So a game of to tell the truth unfolding...this'll be fun.

They need to bribe the IOC to get an acknowledgement.

These Olympics are going to go down like the Edsel - entering the lexicon for "synonymous with failure".

Sochi couldn't be happier.

I had this conversation with my dad yesterday....

Are these Olympics really that bad? The housing issues seem to have been ironed out. Yes, there was a robbery last night, but not an everyday occurrence prior. And the next biggest blunder is a green swimming pool. In the grand scheme of things, not the total failure projected 12 days ago....

Still need the Kraken to come out of the lagoon.

Firstly, the housing situation was really bad. Have you seen some of what the various nations' athletes have put out there about their living conditions? Their apartments have been missing sinks, and a guy was turning on his shower by turning on the sink.

A bridge that extended over the ocean, planned as part of the bicycling events' routes, collapsed. They failed to complete all the necessary mass transit projects. Insufficient security was a known issue going into the games. What all has to go wrong before Rio gets called out for its failures?

Except that the athletics is really entertaining. Other than the water, the facilities are great.

Poverty does manage to bring the worst out in people.

Even with that, the revised cycling route was really great. Very challenging from a technical standpoint, hilly in some places, fast in others. Made for lots of drama both for the women and the men.

This hasn't sucked nearly as much as you would suggest.

Two people died and three others were injured due to this Olympics - due to Rio's inability to find honest and/or capable contractors to build the cycling bridge. How is that not bad enough? Screw the level of competition and its difficulty -- people died due to Rio's failures!

All the housing issues I saw from athletes were before the opening ceremony. Since no one has said anything, I assume that the issues have been addressed in a significant manner. Also, the shower via sink was a reporter, not an athlete, so not exactly on the same level, but still not great. It's been quiet for the 2nd half of the first week. Like I said, the green pool has been the only repeated issue that I've seen.

So then the World Cup in the middle east is already an unmitigated disaster, right? More have died there than 2. People have died building sporting facilities here in the US, for crying out loud- are they disasters for it? Do you not watch football and baseball because people died in construction of stadiums? It sucks, certainly. But that makes it a disaster?

But if you want to find the bad of the event, feel free. Nothing you can do about it than be upset anyway. Go for it. Are you watching to see some other disaster come along?

Really- what do you suggest people do?

There are a few things to take issue with here, but first and foremost, yes...I think the World Cup being awarded to Qatar was a disastrous decision. Pretty unequivocally, actually.

First of all, these people did die during the construction of the bridge. They died after construction had been completed and it was declared ready for use. They were pedestrians who were walking along the beach and happened to be under the bridge when it collapsed.

Second of all, people who willingly sign up to build large construction project run the risk of death during construction projects. Responsible nations and companies do what they can to prevent such happenings, but mistakes will occur, most often by that person either failing to engage their safety equipment or not inspecting their equipment for stress and wear prior to use.

In terms of the World Cup in the Middle East, supporting that will be the equivalent of supporting forced labor - what people like to use as the euphemism for slavery. Look it up - it's been widely reported - the immigrant workers who went to Qatar to work the construction job are having their passports confiscated and forced to continue working in unsafe conditions. Knowingly supporting that 2022 World Cup event is to blacken your very soul in support of slavery.

Not to mention that the 2022 WC would require at least military occupation to avoid the terrorism threats.

People have died in sporting venues or at actual events here, too. How is this different? Let alone various bridges here in the US that have collapsed with cars on them.

None the less, what should one do about it?

Seems like all you can do is be ****ed off. big deal. It's up to Brazil to straighten out what's happening.

The worst you can do is not watch and not travel to Brazil. There you go.

Or the athletes are being told by their various federations to keep their mouths shut.

Re: 2016 Summer Olympics - Ready or not, here we come!!

Not a fan of track and field, but that 10K meter race thing, where the British guy won...what a finish!
I spent the 26 minutes that race lasted with six friends mocking it MST3k style. But I'll be da**ed if that didn't turn into a good race.

I was totally waiting for the British runner to punch the USA runner for accidentally tripping him so early in the race.

This is most likely. Be gracious of the host country, and you'll be richly rewarded for your troubles. Complain, and make the delegation look like whining brats.
