2016 Quinnipiac Bobcats Offseason Thread

Re: 2016 Quinnipiac Bobcats Offseason Thread

Major national respect for Quinnipiac as they are the #2 team in the USCHO preseason poll behind North Dakota. I believe this is highest preseason ranking in program history.

Seems a little ambitious, but it is great to see the program getting this level of respect.

Quinnipiac picks up a commitment for 2001 defenseman Nicholas Kent.

Excited to announce my commitment to play college hockey at Quinnipiac! Thank you to my family and my coaches that helped me along the way.

He's playing for Delta Hockey in British Columbia but he is a California kid. 5'7 135. USHL draft eligible in 2017.

2001. We're now recruiting kids who were born when I was in high school. Thanks for making me feel old.

Re: 2016 Quinnipiac Bobcats Offseason Thread

Excited for the season to begin! I've been following everyone's post the last couple weeks, but have been locked out of my account.

#2 in the poll is just because we were in the championship. Notice the top four were all in Tampa. We obviously aren't the second ranked team. I'd believe it if we had Anas and Toews back.

Excited to see what this year has in store. QUAlum seems confident about our goalie situation, I do not. Hoping for the best. Clarkson and St Lawrence will be strong this year and we all know we struggle with them regardless of their talent.

Excited to have Danny Federico in Charleston this winter. Hope to see him play soon. Hope Mark, Larson, and Schvatz are doing well, as well as everyone else.

Go Bobcats!

I think that is a concern but will probably be covered up to a degree by a very good defense. I think the #2 preseason ranking is high but there is still alot of talent on defense returning and Rand Pecknold will find a way on offense to have new guys step up. If any ranking is too high its BC at #5 in the polls. Hockey East pegged them 6th in the preseason polls but nationally they are 5th which I don't see at all with the talent that defected from the heights.

At the TBL preseason game tonight, Matt Peca is dressed for this one. Haven't particularly noticed anything, mainly because there are far too many unfamiliar #'s to pay attention to.

Re: 2016 Quinnipiac Bobcats Offseason Thread

I am going to go out on a limb here and say the biggest loss to the team in the off season is not Sam Anas, not Michael Garteig, not Travis St. Senis and not Devon Toews. I think the biggest loss might be Reid Cashman.

Look at the goals allowed stats from his 5 years on the staff to the 6 years prior to him on the staff and the numbers are staggering. Now granted we have recruited some pretty solid talent but those numbers are pretty big difference in those years.

With Reid Cashman
2015-16 1.98 GAA
2014-15 1.88 GAA
2013-14 2.03 GAA
2012-13 1.52 GAA
2011-12 2.61 GAA

Without Reid Cashman
2010-11 2.82 GAA
2009-10 2.86 GAA
2008-09 2.08 GAA
2007-08 3.05 GAA
2006-07 2.86 GAA
2005-06 3.36 GAA

While those numbers speak volumes, I'm not sure it was all Reid. We started recruiting (and getting) better defensemen, and it seems our goalies got a little better as we went along too. Granted, Reid was a big part of it, but Rand's strategy changed as well. Reid will be missed, but Dumais is as close to a drop-in replacement as we're going to find.

The biggest change over the last 4 or 5 years has been the total buy-in by everyone, something Reid was a huge part of. He was able to change the culture both on and off the ice because he lived it himself, and we haven't had any really selfish players in quite some time.

Looking forward to getting back to the Bank tomorrow and really interested to see what this team is made of.

Joe Dumais is a fantastic coach but has a forward background. He is a greater recruiter but to me Cashman was the defacto defensive coordinator. We have got some better recruits in that time. As long as there is not a huge change in any defensive structure we should be fine but its something to definitely watch out for.
