2016 NCAA Tournament Thread

Re: 2016 NCAA Tournament Thread

Why would Gary Bettman (and more accurately the owners of the NHL) care about the NCAA star-power? It's the same with all of the pro leagues. The NCAA is not a concern of theirs. All of their rules are for the owner's benefit, not the NCAA. It's led in recent years to systems that are absolutely to the detriment of NCAA in hockey, basketball, and, to a lesser extent, football.

Actually, it's not the same with all professional sports... The NHL drafts teenagers and holds their feet to the fire. Only baseball comes even close to that, but MLB doesn't have a built-in penalty for staying in school. The sport of hockey -while getting better in this regard - is still populated with Neanderthal minds.

It's really not at all surprising at all that hockey in general is barely on the fringe of the national radar. The NHL is completely clueless as to how to grow the sport from the local level, and on up.

What no audio for UMB and Hobart game? The only game I have seen this year without audio and video together. A bit dissapointing.

Re: 2016 NCAA Tournament Thread

Are you getting sound now, hawk? (I am....)

Got it now but is hard watching 3 games at once. Pointers and Adrien sure have some great hockey players. These two teams must be 2 of the best 3 teams in the country. Why bump one out now?

Re: 2016 NCAA Tournament Thread

UMB 2 - Hobart 0

'bout 3:30 left in 3rd.

Edit: And that's how the game ended. SOG UMB 29 - Hobart 42.

Congrats to UMB quarterfinal win. I didn't think Hobart's physical play would bother UMB much since they have size and are very physical themselves. Big win for the NEHC and the UMB.

UMB from the ashes

UMB from the ashes

Quite a feat for UMB. For those of you new to the board, this is the same team that was so short of players in 2003, that they grabbed a player's dad out of the stands to play. One of those rare dad/son combinations on the field/ice simultaneously. ESPN should be doing a 30/30 feature on this comeback story. Story is here

RE: Geneseo v. Williams: Another great outing for Devin McDonald and lots of good plays on the defensive side for both teams. In the end, it was two freshman (Gordan 2 goals and Tutton 2 assists), along with junior Burns (1 assist), who made the difference offensively for Geneseo. Collins, Hills and Marra were checked very close for most of the game, so the secondary scoring really needed to step up. It came down to the wire, but again Geneseo kept the lanes clear for McDonald for much of the game and in most cases he either ate up the puck or deflected it out of harms way. An excellent effort by both teams. Time to begin making travel plans. :)

Quite an impressive lineup for Placid.

Geneseo
Stevens Point
St. Norbert
UMass Boston.

So many great story lines. Enjoy it everyone who is making the trip!

Re: 2016 NCAA Tournament Thread

I'd still like to see a replay on the Hobart no-goal. It sure looked like twine moved. I know the light went on yadda yadda, but I'm still not sure why Taylor didn't even ask for a discussion about it.

Great game by UMB tho. That third periof they just gutted it out from an onslaught of Hobart pressure.

Did you make it over to see it live? I tried watching the feed, almost unwatchable, and unlistenable. I switched over to Adrian/Point. That got interesting in the 3rd.

Yea, a lot of people thought they saw the net move, but it was a bang bang play. I think what more surprised me was the fact that Taylor didn't challenge it or even ask. Then just a couple minutes after the next whistle UMB got their 2nd. I'm not saying it was 100% in, but well worth a discussion. The light "did" go on...

Re: 2016 NCAA Tournament Thread

It seems that Western D3 hockey is much stronger generally that the east now. St. Norbert, Adrian, and Pointers are probable the best 3 teams in the country. Watching the Adrian/Point game they keep talking about all the outstanding Adrian freshmen and there outstanding stats. Is is thet the Western teams recruit more in the NAHL, have better coaching, or more financial aid. Because whatever they are doing it is working. In the East you have more and more teams being formed recruiting from the same pool of players the D1 teams don't want. I would to see all the eastern teams make a strong puch for NAHL players.
