2016-2017 Commitments

Re: 2016-2017 Commitments

I think you have it with some guys still getting D-1 offers...once we get into early June -- into July, we normally see the 'borderline' D-1 guys start committing to the D-3 powers: SNC, Adrian, Point, Platts, etc, etc...
Always interesting to hear the back stories about how these top teams recruit many of the same guys and where they finally landed..

One recent one comes to mind is Grant Gallo who committed to Plattsburgh and then early summer Nebraska-Omaha had an spot open up and the offered it to him so his is playing D1 now.

SNC has lost guys, in a similar fashion, over the years..

Re: 2016-2017 Commitments

Division 3 recruiting comes down to Financial aid and admissions. It's not an accident that the top teams are always on top. D3 has large loop holes and if Colleges choose to utilize them, they can win year in and year out. D1 is a much more even playing field. These schools at the top of D3 are not violating NCAA rules per say, they just have administration that is committed to a certain sport. It's not just hockey, it's across the D3 landscape.

Financial aid resources are really dependent upon the FA resources of the entire school. It is the "rising tide raises all boats" concept. It is true that some schools can shade it, but some have been caught with their fingers in the cookie jar as it were. The metrics are pretty strict, and if it is demonstrable that athletes get better packages than math students, they will get called out.

Most of the schools with a really good overall financial aid program (such as the NESCACs, and some of the other academically renowned schools) also have high admissions standards - depending on the inclination of the school, they may put the thumb on the scales for applications for some athletes, but those that can get in will get better financial aid there than at some of the less academically demanding schools. If a hockey player is a top student, they can get outstanding aid at certain schools. To a certain extent that is a bit of a wash - it may be easier to get into a lower academic tier school, but the financial aid is not a freely available.

I think the big difference comes in the other resources that a school can devote to a program. Some schools don't have the resources for even one full time coach, and other schools can have a full-time coach and a full-time assistant who is in charge of recruiting. Some schools devote a lot to facilities that other schools can't afford. The effect of history is meaningful too. Suppose that a student is being recruited by Norwich and NEC (for example). If you look at facilities, history of championships, the appearance of the campus, the amount of money spent on the program, the support of the community - Norwich has a lot of advantages. There may be reasons for choosing one over the other, but Norwich has a leg up in a number of ways if both schools want the same student. Not all programs are recruited equal for any number of reasons.

I know D3 hockey added some that I missed but saw this today and it is a big one for Oswego

Charlie Pelnik D 6’5” 187lbs (32GP 0 G 6 A 6 Pts) Connecticut Oilers

I don't mean big because of his size but he was a first round pick in the USHL draft and at 15 verbally committed to North Dakota

http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/college/hockey/2010-12-07-north-dakota-pelnik-commitment_N.htm

looks like he couldn't cut it in the USPHL 5 years later though...will be one of the more interesting commits to watch next year for sure

It could be because of his size, watched highlights on Youtube and looks like a good skater like they have said. When he was younger they (The Hockey News) compared him to a young Chris Pronger. Here is his draft scouting report from the OHL.

2011 OHL Draft Scouting Report: a great combination of size skill and grit, good team player who is fearless & is willing to stick up for his teammates, plays a solid defensive game with good positioning and gap control, likes the physical game, makes things miserable for opposing forwards, tough to play against in the corners & in front of his net, good skater for his size with quick acceleration & good mobility, makes good first pass clearing out of the zone, needs to work on his puck handling and can be undisciplined at times....drafted by Fargo of the USHL...committed to North Dakota....rated as a mid to late first rounder but will most likely drop.
The article I read where he decommitted from North Dakota the author said his development just sort of stopped while in JR's which is why he went to the BCHL.

Wow. Maybe didn't get through clearinghouse either?

That's a big get.

Sad that there are no goalies on the Elmira list, that's where their biggest weakness was last year.
