2015 World is upon us.

Re: 2015 World is upon us.

"Goaler" ??? just how old are you anyway??

Younger than you, that is a fact. :D

Using Goaler nothing to do with age, more due to my French Canadian connections...Def of Goaler:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=goaler
"TOP DEFINITION
goaler
French Canadian expression for goalie, goaltender or goalkeeper."

BTW, that Russian Goaler looked pretty p'ed off after the buzzer beater by Birchard from outside the blueline. Canada up 3-0 after one.

Yeah, 0.1 seconds left on the clock when the puck crossed the goal line via the five hole. Big blast but poor goaltending...certainly should have had it...blade of her stick not on the ice.

And I am totally impressed with Tessa Bonhomme's commentary from the studio. Her knowledge is a given but I'm referring to the ease with which she delivers it. Completely relaxed and no inhibitions...like she's sitting in her own living room at home but, yet, in front of hundreds of thousands if not millions.

Quite literally, an absolute natural!

You gotta love those gigantic screens at each end of the rink for the replays etc.

Too bad there's nobody there to benefit from them.

I would have expected more people in the stands on a weekend and being in Malmo and would have thought it would draw some from Copenhagen.

Denmark is not that big into the hockey. It is the same old stuff. Over here the stands are reasonably filled, but unless it's men's div 1, often stands fairly empty in Europe. Even Men's world Juniors don't draw that well in Europe.

Yes, I'm aware. But with Copenhagen's population and proximity and Denmark's having some interest in the game I didn't expect the place to be full but I would have thought that there would be more in the stands than there were. UND did have a goaltender from Denmark a few years ago and Jakobsen just finished her senior season with them so you would think that there must be some female hockey players in Denmark who might be interested in the opportunity to take in some games at the Worlds. It's just a drive over the bridge from Copenhagen.

And Malmo is a decent hockey town too, but, it's like you said...same old stuff.

And attendance may not have been helped by Sweden's being defeated by Japan. Women's hockey fortunes indeed seem to be rising in the Land of the Rising Sun...they also beat Germany today. Looks like Carla McLeod has had a positive impact on their program.

Although, Wikipedia claims that average attendance so far has been over 1100 per game...

Unfortunately, on the Hockey Canada site there are only rosters available for 3 of the 8 teams...Russia, US and Canada.

And the site had a link to archived games (that didn't work) and now that link has disappeared in the last hour so who knows if it be available and working later.

I'm not sure what is happening with the Swedish women's program, it seems to have really fallen off. I watched them play live a few times in the previous worlds (In Ottawa in 2013), and they did not look great then. As a matter of fact they had to scrape by the Czech team to avoid relegation.

Ha! Goaler indeed....mon dieu!! That's right down there with "ice hockey".

When a school makes reference to its "ice hockey" team you pretty much know that hockey is regarded as a minor sport.

Hockey = Hockey!
Field hockey = Field hockey!
:)

Where I come from it's the inverse.

Hockey is Field Hockey, Ijs Hockey = Ice Hockey. Off course, this is from my native land where World championships and Olympic medals have been a common theme in Field Hockey.

Re: 2015 World is upon us.

FINAL: USA 4, Finland 1 - Shots were 53-12.

Hilary Knight scored the first two American goals and added an assist. Brianna Decker dished out 3 assists. Kendall Coyne and Hannah Brandt scored, Brandt's coming shorthanded.

Anyone have insight as to why Rigsby missed the final 1:48 of the first period? Equipment issue?

Re: 2015 World is upon us.

Rehashing Sunday's results:

Pool B - Sweden 3, Switzerland 2
Pool B - Japan 2, Germany 0
Pool A - Canada 4, Russia 0
Pool A - USA 4, Finland 1

Standings:

Pool A
USA - 2-0-0-0 - 6 pts
Canada - 1-0-0-1 - 3 pts
Finland - 0-1-0-1 - 2 pts
Russia - 0-0-1-1 - 1 pt

Pool B
Japan - 1-1-0-0 - 5 pts
Sweden - 1-0-1-0 - 4 pts
Switzerland - 1-0-0-1 - 3 pts
Germany - 0-0-0-2 - 0 pts

USA has already earned a quarterfinal bye and a pass to the semifinals; Germany will be in the relegation series regardless of Tuesday's result.

Big soccer match between France and Denmark on Sunday. I'm sure that trumped hockey across a bridge.

Re: 2015 World is upon us.

Tom Renney was interviewed by Rod Black and Cheryl Pounder between the 2nd and 3rd periods in Canada's game today vs Finland and they kept him on air with them for a large part of the third period. Interesting addition to the colour commentating.

Re: 2015 World is upon us.

I'm surprised that the Canadian team has not played Maschmeyer. In my view, she is the better of the 3 "goalers" they have. Are they saving her for the big game?

Lacasse let in a weak one yesterday against Finland near the end of the game. The game was already in hand but with decision making for that position supposedly being an ongoing process that might come into play. So, who knows who will play from this point onward?

I thought Maschmeyer might play yesterday and was somewhat surprised that she didn't. For a goaltender with no experience at this level it would be unusual not to play her in the tournament prior to the "big game" but then voluntarily give her that assignment on the last day.
