U.S. beat Austria in Austria 4-1 today in an exhibition. Mike Reilly scored the opening goal and was named player of the game. Auston Matthews (USNTDP) scored the GWG after helping the U-18s win their World Championship in Switzerland, but he will not be on the final roster. Lyon played in the 3rd period and did not give up a goal. A skater and a goalie are left to be added to the roster.

The U.S. is in group B. Full schedule is here. http://mensworlds.usahockey.com/page/show/1195680-schedule Games will be streamed live, and most will air live, on NBCSN. First game is Friday at 10:15 AM vs. Finland.

Oh, this tournament also determines the seeding for the 2018 Olympics. http://www.usahockey.com/news_article/show/488969?referrer_id=752796 Other nations have not brought such a young, experimental lineup. Should be a good experience for the NCAA guys anyway.

Re: 2015 World Championship Thread

Slovenia has former UAA defenseman Luka Vidmar on their roster.

And the US roster is terrible. In contrast, Canada has Sydney Crosby.

Re: 2015 World Championship Thread

France has former UML players Laurent Meunier and Yorick Treille as usual.

And Sydney won't be there is the Penguins were still in the Stanley Cup playoffs. What available players would you like to see on the U.S. team?

Off the top of my head: Oshie, Backes, Bobby Ryan, Brock Nelson, Trouba, Craig Anderson, Ryan Miller, Paul Stastny

Re: 2015 World Championship Thread

Yeah, I can honestly say there are 3 or 4 guys on that roster that I have never heard of. I generally like the youth approach, but I think this is a little extreme.

I know some guys often turn down the invite, as they are often just glad to get their NHL season over with - any indication that any of those better names did so?

Another name - Shattenkirk.

Re: 2015 World Championship Thread

In other World Championship action, North Korea won the D3 title over Turkey. Here's the game winning goal

So they'll be in 2B next year. Their counterparts from the South won the 1B title, so they'll be in 1A next year. Looks like they're at least improving for the Olympics, but most likely they will be somwhere between 18-20th in the world, between 1A and 1B when the Olympics take place. I really hope the US can be in their group just for the free win.

Nelson was supposedly added but I haven't seen anything on him yet. Trouba is hurt. Backes's wife is due with child soon so I think he was a polite maybe (ie-no). I haven't seen anything about the other guys but I'd have to think most were invited and said no.

Re: 2015 World Championship Thread

That's our roster?

We're boned.

Well, we're a young team. Finland is a good test to see what the team looks like. The Vesey/Eichel/Lewis line should be interesting.

USA Line Chart

Forwards

Lee/Arcobella/Morin
Hendricks/Larkin/Sexton
Vesey /Eichel/Lewis
Nelson/Bonino/Moses
Smith

Defense

Krug/Faulk
Reilly/Jones
Moore/Murphy

Goalies

Hellebuyck*

Re: 2015 World Championship Thread

0-0, 7:00 1st. USA has had only 4 practices, Nelson just arrived today. So this team has been thrown together. PP Finland.

Re: 2015 World Championship Thread

Steve Moses scores on the short side with :21 left in 1st. Nice shot. 1-0 USA

Re: 2015 World Championship Thread

SOG Finland 14, USA 11. USA was outplayed for most of the 1st. But Hellebuyck is on his game in net.

Re: 2015 World Championship Thread

If I'm reading the point system correctly, the only way we don't directly qualify for the Olympics is if we finish somewhere between 13-16, and Latvia, Norway, and Belarus medal, I believe the final two having to earn gold while we finish last. So essentially, don't get relegated and we're in. And even if we do get relegated there's still a decent chance we're in.
