2015 WCHA Offseason

Re: 2015 WCHA Offseason

did you take the step of doing a FOIA request?

He filed FOIAs with everyone. UAH demurred, citing a court case where they don't have to respond to a non-Alabama resident. Drew asked me to file one, and I haven't decided whether I will do so. They clearly don't want to do it, and I always ride a line with how much I antagonize the school. :)

I find it amusing that in today's day and age, some of these contracts locking in millions in salary still look like they were done up on a typewriter complete with hand written modifications... Public schools still not big on computers and word processing software I guess.

On the upside, I am impressed that a contract valued for millions of dollars can be completed in five pages.

Michigan Tech didn't want me to do it either with Pearson was hired and everyone is fine with it now if BGDrew got a response to the latest contract. I wouldn't worry about hurting anyone's feelings. The information should be public and no one will be hurt by knowing.

Re: 2015 WCHA Offseason

as a public institution, on what grounds would they object to the Alabama public not having the info? just curious.

Michigan Tech was scared of it being public, but I told them all that I was going to do it because I wanted to show how serious the school was about fixing things by giving him the money necessary to turn things around. We also wanted to know what kind of protections there were from Michigan taking him away from MTU.

The only other school we really ran into issue with was FSU who claimed Daniels has no contract or any other document showing his employment agreement. But even they linked to a document that listed the salary of every school employee.

I feel that since UAH received federal dollars, and I pay federal taxes that I should be allowed to request the information. The US Supreme Court and their Attorney General disagree.

We've had a few Alabama citizens step forward to possibly help out so we're hopeful we'll be able to get it posted.

Some interesting nuggets within the BGSU contract.

Among other items, coach receives a $2,500 bonus if the team achieves a collective GPA of 3.03 each spring.
Assistant coaches receive $1,500 bonuses if the team achieves a collective GPA of 3.03 each spring.

Coach also receives a $2,500 bonus if the team achieves a Graduation Success Rate of at least 85% each spring.

oh, and the $450 automobile stipend is per month.

Those are cool to see as a college coach. If I remember right there is a quote of MacInnes' that mentions one of his proudest achievements is student athletes graduating.

That's fine. IF I were using it for my purpose, I'd be fine with doing it (although I'd have to have a reason to be writing a story like this anyway). I was never comfortable with being a pass-through — face it, when you tweeted at me, you made my involvement public. :)

We already have a private discussion about all of this so I'll simply say I'm sorry you feel that way.

We have updated our post to include found earnings information about Mike Corbett and have updated our story with the found information. It appears that Corbett might be the lowest paid coach (in terms of total earnings) in the league: http://www.bgsuhockey.com/2015/07/wcha-coachs-contracts-for-2015-2016-season/

Re: 2015 WCHA Offseason

Surprised to see Thomas and Serratore are at the $200k mark.

Serratore and Hastings are both a little bit higher in terms of base pay because the union that they are a part of doesn't allow them the flexibility to negotiate some of those other bonuses and benefits.

It's also worth pointing out that prior to this summer, Walt Kyle was on a rolling contract with Northern Michigan and it was renegotiated to have a fixed end date.

Re: 2015 WCHA Offseason

I think it's funny to see that Matt Thomas at UAA gets the additional benefit of season tickets to home hockey games. I'm aware they're probably not for his usage, but it does make you do a double take, eh?

why funny? Pearson and Bergeron get them too.

Players get free tickets for every game as well. Your point?
