2014 UNH Wildcats: Ending Strong and Starting Fresh

Kind of funny how a coach can drop a player from the team without a hassle...
Coaches seldom do, because there is a price to pay with a hit on the reputation if nothing else. It's much tougher to get that next recruit to trust you if you're known to pull scholarships.

For any player to talk to another school (for varsity play) they have to get permission from their own school first. (NCAA rule).

P.S.

The player transferring to another school in HE may have to sit a year. (I think that HE rule was brought in in the not too distant past, Hux would know those details). Most recent within HE transfer that I can recall was the Wakefield one, ironically also from UNH to BU. At that time there was no transfer and sit rule for transfers within HE.

Armstrong will play immmediately with SLU and have two years remaining. Crossley will redshirt next year and get three years from BU but can only practice next year and play 2015-17 and then done. BU coach was presented with release and then spoke with interim UNH coach prior to speaking with Crossley. SLU coach also did all as per NCAA rules. Both are wonderful ladies and love UNH however had enough of the silliness from outside of the team room.

Interestingly enough, today I get an Email from UNH asking for my voting consideration on candidates for both the Alumni Assoc. and Board of Trustees....would it be wrong of me to call them up and see what they think of the way that UNH has handled the McCloskey issue? Why is it I don't think they've even heard what went on....any bets?

Re: 2014 UNH Wildcats: Ending Strong and Starting Fresh

We know 2 ladies are leaving, but is there any chance the coach might have a couple of experienced players that would be transferring in?

Go for it!

Nice addition to the Athletics program since many of the venues/training activities are on that end of campus. Though the campus is not that large schedules are tight before and after workouts and having a dedicated area with advisors and tutors will be a plus for these athletes. There are enough of these centers on campuses now that the evidence is pretty compelling that players that utilize these resources have a higher GPA and graduation rate which also correlates to them being better prepared for post college. The athletic academic centers are always a key stop on the tour during a recruiting visit. This should help Coach Witt and staff in reinforcing UNH's commitment to academics.

Wasn't the rumor a few years ago that Ashley Riggs wanted to transfer out of Niagara and Margot Page wouldn't give her a release? That is about the only case of that sort I can remember. I agree with you that a team figures to be better off with a roster of players fully committed to the program.

Similar issue happened with a player that transferred from UVM to Cornell a few years ago. Departing team did not give her a release. She ended up sitting a year and then played her final two years at Cornell. With a release she could have played right away.

Coach Witt has been in office for 2 hours now. Give her a minute!

Re: 2014 UNH Wildcats: Ending Strong and Starting Fresh

As DC noted, today Coach Witt takes over the reigns of the UNH Women's program....the program's fourth coach in it's near 40 years of existence....I'm sure I speak for DC and many others when I wish her the best of luck at her new job! Too say that she has her work cut out for herself is a DUH, but she'll quickly learn that even given the current state of affairs, Coach Witt is not alone in her belief and goal of returning UNH to it's rightful place amongst the sport's Elite! So a hearty Wildcat welcome to Coach Witt, may fair winds and calm seas bring you and the team success and a return to enjoying hockey!

Re: 2014 UNH Wildcats: Ending Strong and Starting Fresh

Witt should be at Cianfarano's house with full offer in hand. She is one of few schools with scholarship $$. Rebuild beast of east.

It is pretty much well accepted at this point that admissions has cracked down on both the men's and women's programs at UNH. This ranges from a hard 2 year foreign language requirement that has hurt Canadian recruiting, to refusing to even consider Johnny Gaudreau's late application after decommitting from NU (and whose best friend plays for UNH), to rumored players never committing, or decommitting for academic reasons. If her decommit from Wisco is indeed for academic reasons, I have a hard time believing that the current UNH admissions would accept her.

Now that Coach Witt has been in charge for about a month ... any insights into any UNH comings and goings beyond what has been discussed on here prior to her arrival?

Not so far. There has not been a Friends meeting since at least March. May was supposed to be Board elections, but that was postponed. I have been trying to keep (unofficially now, of course) an ear on the situation, and the word I hear is that the remaining board members (three or four people) were told to hold off on meeting by the administration. I am still willing to do anything for the program, and right now, that's pretty easy - stand around and wait.

BS35 must be working on more important things right now. Probably editing the pep band's playlist as we speak.

There is apparently going to be an "unofficial" meeting for Friends of UNH Women's Hockey this Tuesday (June 24th) evening @ 7:00 p.m. at the Applebee's Restaurant in Epping. There has not been an official meeting of the FOWH Board for several months, dating back to the contentious discussions and resgignations in the aftermath of Coach McCloskey's dismissal. It is my understanding this meeting is for general informational purposes, and it should be interesting to see if UNH and the remaining BOD members take a conciliatory approach to the get-together ... OR if there will be agendas pursued/grudges held from the events of the last several months.

Isn't Jamie the one that recruited the problem child?

Someone gave me the following Negative Reputation response, "Sure. Every coach should know how a kid is going to handle circumstances they'll encounter 2-4 years in the future. All by just watching them play and meeting them briefly. Right?"

Yes, they should have some due diligence. Some coaches livelihood depends upon it?! They are also handing out $200,000.

McKloskey had a very good blog post about not rushing with early commitments and getting to know recruits with multiple contacts and things like in-home visits and such - to make sure the kid fit in with the team. Clearly, he would agree that they should have done due diligence. Did they in this case, or did it just fail them? I'm sure every once in a while no matter how much due diligence you do, sometimes things slip through the cracks.
