This. The only ones whining about it are Minnesota fans or Avs fans. Everybody else has just gone "meh".

Pretty much. The risk of taking him has always been exactly this. Many players do something stupid at some point, and when he does the consequences are going to be big.

Also, if he had been given a major and tossed for the remainder of the game, would the suspension be as long? I would usually say no, but who knows with Cooke and his history.

smith might be a little out of place as a long-term 2nd line center but depends on the situation obviously. i think he is showing that he can be a top nine forward though.

If that truly was the reason behind the choice of 7 games, I guess I can handle that. I would think being the playoffs, 5 games for being Matt Cooke is a bit excessive since they claim they're more important so suspensions are usually shorter...

No doubt. Just for this playoffs. Hawks need a legit 2nd line center at some point, but that's been going on for years now through two Cups.

Hawks fans by and large LOVE Smith and his effort level.

Now THAT was an awesome hit. Sobotka doesn't know where he is, and he can't catch his breath while he tries to figure it out.
