2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Wow. It's a shame people are more broken up about a men's loss in a game they never led in, and in the semi's, than a complete collapse in the last 3 minutes and change of the gold medal game by our women's team.

That probably has more to do with the fact that they probably had never seen a woman's game so they don't have any respect for it. And when they say 52%, that could mean only 50 people responded to the poll and that was the opinion of 26 of them. That's why they give percentages and not raw numbers! As I said yesterday, it was still a great game, regardless of whether it was men, women or chimps playing.

It was over 100,000 votes.

Also, women's hockey was voted as the more disappointing loss in New England / Minnesota / etc.

In other regions you have NHL exposure and near-zero women's hockey exposure. So what do you expect?

The US isn't Canada, so the average office isn't abuzz with talk of women's hockey.

Just heard that our provincial gub'mint has allowed all bars in the province to open at 5:00 A.M. on Sunday to allow late Saturday or early Sunday revellers to watch the men's Gold Medal game.

I also understand that many schools made a point of suspending classes to allow the students to watch the women's Gold Medal game on wide screens and downtown board rooms did the same.

Surprising what a difference a few miles and crossing an imaginary line can make.

Where is the Dineen vs Stone thread? Another thread disappear?

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

My unsolicited observations;

Best tournament as a whole to date.
Most competitive for most number of teams ever - fewest blowouts.
Exciting, legitimate play in most number of games.
More teams have improved chances of getting to medal rounds due to NCAA hockey.
Officiating needs to rebuilt or all of the progress will not matter.

I agree on all counts

It seems to have disappeared just after I posted a joke about Kevin Spacey playing Kevin Dineen in the upcoming Miracle on Ice: Ladies' Day movie (google Spacey and you'll see the resemblance is uncanny).

There were a few posts after that, but when I was trying to post a funny response to the HUX post, it timed out and then the thread just vanished. I suspect the repeated "in bad taste" postings by one poster led to the delete. The second to last post was 1-2-3-4-5 ...Boom.

It's ok, I took out my aggressions on my snow shovel when I was cleaning off the roof of the house. Not a wise thing to do when you end up having to climb down to fetch the instrument so you can complete the task at hand!

You mean your other half did not help you by pitching the shovel back up ?. I mean every time you go on the roof you should have someone supervising (safety aspect in the power of two).

I think that was 5-4-3-2-1...boom.

...and someone waiting for an exploding head.

I didn't realize NHL coaches had voodoo powers to cause the USA errors leading to the tying goal. And I'm sure falling behind 2-0 was a brilliant piece of NHL strategy that an amateur like me could never understand. I stand corrected on denying that the NHL coach was a gigantic advantage for Canada.

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

I don't feel like I know if the US was out-coached, but I do think that it's possible for coaching to impact the outcome of a game. On the Harvard thread the posters often comment on Stone using a short bench and they believe it often hurts Harvard late in the season and late in games.

Amanda Kessel was not one of the top 5 forwards used in the game. I don't know if she was hurt but I think she should have played regular full shifts.
21 Forward Hilary KNIGHT 24:57:00
16 Forward Kelli STACK 24:18:00
14 Forward Brianna DECKER 21:58
25 Forward Alex CARPENTER 20:10
10 Forward Meghan DUGGAN 20:06
28 Forward Amanda KESSEL 17:29
17 Forward Jocelyne LAMOUREUX 16:14
26 Forward Kendall COYNE 15:05
13 Forward Julie CHU 12:40
7 Forward Monique LAMOUREUX 9:16
18 Forward Lyndsey FRY 2:06

THIS 100%!

But I also would like responses from seasoned observers of crunch-time if anyone found it odd that the USA assistant coaches seemed to hold court during the last two breaks in action with +/- 3 minutes to go. Could be lots of good reasons, I guess, but for this uninitiated video viewer with no knowledge of coaching it was a striking visual, if nothing else. (Had similar question posted on the now boomed D/S thread and was seconded by a Canadian viewer who had split-screen shots of the two benches, with a fully engaged Dineen.) Don't know enough to be critical, but love the game enough to admit puzzlement.

Well, I know that is a regular occurrence with U of Wisconsin coaches, both men's and women's team. And I have a clear image in my head of the Canadian women gathered around that assistant woman coach with the curly hair and glasses (sorry, don't know here name) during some game this week. So in my rather limited experience, it is pretty common.

Thanks. That's just the kind of info I was looking for!
