2014 Inaugural Big Ten Hockey Tournament 3/20 - 3/22

Re: 2014 Inaugural Big Ten Hockey Tournament 3/20 - 3/22

If you had been at the game you would have seen the 4 ohio state guys sitting back most of the game, just like the boring crappy way Eaves coaches.

You dont want them to play that style then get ahead of them. For most of the game they sat in a 1-2-2 through the neutral zone. As far as them dropping 4 down low thats part of the game dont like it make them change it by getting ahead.

Yep. If you can't impose your will then you have to win playing whatever the style.

The Gophers did neither.

Congrats to the Buckeyes. They did what they had to last night. I do feel that it is a shame when a player the caliber of Dzingle doesn't play in the NCAAs. Now go out there and beat those Badgers.

Yep, sucks as much this morning as it did last night. Been a long time since the Gophers did anything in the conference tournament. Wait another year I guess. I'll just have to hope they can flip the switch back on or a magic season is over.

Good luck to both teams tonight.

Re: 2014 Inaugural Big Ten Hockey Tournament 3/20 - 3/22

Clearly the gophers just threw the last two games in the hopes that they would drop out of the #1 overall seed so they wouldn't have to play the #5 seed in the 2nd round.

Just as the Sioux have thrown so many games in the hopes they would drop out of the tourney and be better rested for their opening exhibition against Manitoba in October.

Re: 2014 Inaugural Big Ten Hockey Tournament 3/20 - 3/22

I find it interesting that so many fans have this waiting for the other shoe to drop mentality, as if the Gophers aren't the only program with multiple titles to finish most seasons without a NC. Holy Cross has nothing to do with this team.

If past failures were a link to the future, remember that Denver lost 4 SBs before winning 2. The Gophers lost in the NCAAs all kinds of ways over 23 years before winning 2 more. BC went decades without a title before owning the past 12 years. DU had a drought, UND is in one now.

Nothing is owed and nothing is guaranteed - including losing.

At least some of you can make plans for something else next weekend since you know for a fact they're doing to lose.

Well stated, Slap, but why can't you just let us cry in our beer?

I'm not pointing to history as a metric for this team.

I'm using the fact they may be playing their worst hockey of the year over the past several weeks as they enter a one-and-done tourney.

That, and if they were at all capable of "throwing the switch" or whatever you want to call it to make a charge into the post season, it would have happened last night, in a favorable environment, against a weaker foe.

And it didn't happen.

And if it didn't happen last night, it ain't gonna happen.

Re: 2014 Inaugural Big Ten Hockey Tournament 3/20 - 3/22

I think Ohio State is a solid team who has some nice high end upper class talent, they had some crazy goaltending issues going at beginning of the year or they would have finished higher in the B1G imo, but have that resolved now it seems. I wouldn't be surprised if they win tonight.

With about 7 minutes left, the first line really applied the pressure. I thought that was going to be the start of a big push. But they looked horrible most of the rest of the game, like they were gripping sticks too tightly. In those last few minutes they misplayed the puck or missed passes so many times when they could have created an opportunity. Instead, they didn't really generate the chances. They didn't appear to be a team loaded with confidence, which is what they had mid-season and what they need coming into NCAA. Hopefully having the number one seed will mean they can win the first game and regain some confidence, because they need to all be going all out if they want a shot at winning it all. I tend to be a pessimist. I am also realistic enough to know that even if they were in mid-season form coming into the NCAA's, things still need to go your way to win it all. This sort of play is why I wish they had those one or two guys who are big-time scorers to score when the team isn't playing with the most confidence. Just have to wait and see....

They're a strong team, no doubt. With all the crap that was going on with the program early in the season, it seemed like they were clearly a bottom-half team (even the decommits made it seem like this year's team was worse off, even though it's more of a long-term issue). But as you said, they seemed to have resolved those issues, and shouldn't be written off.

No matter how we do from this point I think Coach Rohlik has done an exceptional job as a new head coach and will no doubt be able to convince some top shelf talent to come and play here.

If can't recruit the state of Minnesota he will never win a national championship.

It's been 35 years since Minnesota won one without recruiting in North Dakota. :)

Coach Rohlik is doing just fine in this regard, thank you very much.

As was repeated endlessly on last night's broadcast, Drew Brevig is from Lakeville South. Anthony Greco and Al McLean are Minnesotans, as is Matt Johnson. In the recent past we had an outstanding goalie from The Falls in the person of Brady Hjelle. No inside info, but I presume that Coach's UMD connections had a little something to do with getting Brady to Columbus. Looking ahead, my understanding is that we've got a Nanne in the pipeline, who did OK for Edina this year.

In order to be successful, clearly Buckeye Hockey needs to recruit across North America, and in the USHL in particular. Obviously that's going to include some Minnesotans. And since Coach is a Hill-Murray guy, of course he's going to leverage the connections he has in his native state.

By no means I am guaranteeing a national title. But if there's no such title, inability to recruit MN won't be the reason.

Ok here is the deal if you look at the last 20 winners almost all of them have recruited from the state of Minnesota. You don't recruit Minnesota you don't win national championships. :D
