2014 Inaugural Big Ten Hockey Tournament 3/20 - 3/22

Re: 2014 Inaugural Big Ten Hockey Tournament 3/20 - 3/22

I'm just glad I don't have to watch a Gopher vs MSU match up tonight, they are as bad as watching the Badgers play. Slow boring trap blah, at least Ohio State likes to skate a little and has some speed.

Go Gophers!
I agree. That's what I was saying when I was at the game last night. Even if the Gophers lose tonight we can at least (hopefully) look forward to a little back and forth hockey.

Agree on MSU.
UW hasn't been as ugly this year as in past seasons.

Re: 2014 Inaugural Big Ten Hockey Tournament 3/20 - 3/22

I have to agree with my misguided red friend friom the east.

Reported attendance numbers from yesterday's first round games:

PSU v Mich - 7333
MSU v OSU - 7408

Remove the '7' from each of those attendance figures and you will get a much more accurate reading on the number of bodies in the building. I agree the WCHA final 5 was a great event and it is already missed. The B1G ten tourney will never get to that level of excitement. It is too bad.

College athletics, TV coverage and revenue will always be driven by football and basketball. Interest in college hockey will remain regional and will continue to diminish with the exception of 5-6 markets. I just don't see the B1G Ten hockey tournament ever reaching a level close to what we had with the WCHA. Sad state of affairs when the conference and media have to pump up the numbers to make it look like this event is a success.

I would say it's accurate to take those numbers and subtract 6000. 1,500 people in a 19K arena does look anemic. I imagine the remaining no-shows are Gopher fans that bought the package but chose to not show. Today and tonight will be a little more accurate.

I have been to just about every Thursday game at the X since the WCHA tourney started, and while yesterday was pathetic, most Thursday afternoon games were pretty dismal, unless UND or SCSU were playing.

Re: 2014 Inaugural Big Ten Hockey Tournament 3/20 - 3/22

Neutral site college hockey is idiotic for a conference tournament. Same for NCAA Regionals.

The original B1G Playoffs idea was great. 3v6 & 4v5 best of three campus series and the regular season champion hosts the winners of those games and the 2 in single elimination.

Other than the big two: Football and MEN'S Basketball, neutral site B1G tourneys will fail in this conference.

Anyone see the B1G Baseball Tournament in Minneapolis last year at Target Field? What a debacle that was.

Re: 2014 Inaugural Big Ten Hockey Tournament 3/20 - 3/22

Yes. And those schools in the WCHA were all hockey schools. D1 hockey is their biggest thing.

minnesota is the only one in the B1G that can say that. Everyone else, Hockey is #3 at best.

Very good points.

Then instead of saying "neutral site college hockey is idiotic for a conference tournament", you should have said "neutral site college hockey is idiotic for this conference tournament".

I can see your rational with that, and would probably agree. For the first round for sure.

Well, to be fair, he's probably right as it stands now with the current hockey conferences. I believe the old WCHA was the exception.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I'm thinking even Hockey East doesn't pack whatever that arena is called unless BC & BU are playing each other? Every time I've watched it on TV there are lots of empty seats.

My god is Wisconsin boring, Penn State too for that matter, though they have a pass for being new. Eaves shoukd be embarrased for playing such a jacques lemaire type style, bleh.
