2014 Frozen Four Info Thread

Re: 2014 Frozen Four Info Thread

I was thinking of a trip to the Parx Racetrack/Casino on Friday since this weekend is not costing me enough as it is. Any feedback on the facility? Dump, decent, worth or not worth a visit?

Have you been to the city of Philadelphia before? If not I'd do Independence Hall, the Constitution museum, Reading Market terminal and the American Jewish History museum.

I've been to most of those places but will have a day and a half at my disposal. Also may try to go to Phils game if weather is decent.

I don't follow or bet the ponies myself so I can't help you there. If it's the casino that's appealing, there is one right in Philly off Delaware Ave. and a bunch in and around Philly and the State of Delaware.

If you have a car and it's a nice day, Princeton is an option. It's about an hour away, the campus is beautiful as is Nassau Street and be sure and visit the idyllic Baker Arena. The Triumph Brewing Company is right on Nassau Street and there are plenty of other good watering holes. The shopping is a bit pricey but the ladies like it.

South St seaport is a great place to grab a bite alone the river. Walkable (albeit bring your walking shoes) from WTC

if you go to NYC and don't bring walking shoes then dont go to NYC, what's a mattah for you??? . Its got to be one of the greatest walking cities anywhere. Claver, you are young, you think it's a hike from WTC to South Street Seaport?

Ha well walking a mile (from WFC) in dress shoes isn't always the most fun, had many a lunch on the water down there.

Re: 2014 Frozen Four Info Thread

Thoughts about NYC: Obviously you're not going to see anything close to the whole city in 12 hours but it's enough to hit a bunch of the high points.

Grand Central is gorgeous and definitely worth a look. MSG is kind of an eyesore from the outside and probably not worthwhile unless you're going to an event there or doing a behind-the-scenes type of a tour.

As others noted, Top of the Rock might be a good spot to hit; you get the view of all the great buildings, including the Empire State Building, without the crazy lines to go up the ESB.

If you're not able to go to the museum (either because it's not open or because you haven't pre-booked tickets), the WTC is probably not worth visiting. Honestly, it's basically just a huge construction site at this point, though my view is presumably skewed by the fact that I've worked a block away for years now, so the emotional impact is sort of blunted at this point. South Street Seaport is also kinda terrible (and really not entirely recovered from Sandy yet either) and I'd say skip it.

Times Square is pretty cool to see but you'll be happy just walking through. Most of the stores you probably have at whatever mall is closest to you at home, they're just bigger in Times Square.

Central Park and the Museum of Natural History (or the Met if you prefer art to science) are definitely a good draw, especially given the awesome weather we're expecting in the Northeast this weekend.

So, I'd say you could make a nice day out of Grand Central, Rockefeller Center, Times Square, Central Park, and one of the museums. You could probably also fit in downtown sights but trying to cram in too much makes sightseeing a chore rather than a pleasure, if you ask me. Those are all pretty walkable to one another, which might be a good thing if, as I mentioned, the weather turns out to be really nice.

If you're looking for places to eat while you're here, let me know if there's any particular meals/types of food you're looking for and I'll see if I can come up with something good.

(Huh. Never expected a thread about the FF in Philly to turn out to be about sightseeing in NYC.)

Re: 2014 Frozen Four Info Thread

I'm surprised, too, but it appears that only a couple of fans are making the trek to NYC. I can understand fans from the Midwest or west coast, who haven't been to Manhattan, investing the time and money but Philly has more than enough to offer, and time is short.

Re: 2014 Frozen Four Info Thread

I'm trying to decide if it makes sense to get the weekly SEPTA pass. It says it's good for the Airport Line between the airport and the CCP (I assume that means city center Philly) stations. Does that include Suburban Station?

I figure if it costs $6.50 one-way for the Airport Line, I would only need to make two trips per day using prepaid tokens (six total trips) to break even. If I paid cash for each trip, I would only need to make five. Either way, anyone else thinking about this?

The CC stations are 30th Street(Amtrak), 15th Street(Suburban) and 11th Street(Market East). If you're staying in CC, IMO it would make sense because it will cover your trips on the Broad Street subway down to the Sports Complex.

Re: 2014 Frozen Four Info Thread

I'm staying at the Windsor near Suburban Station, so that checks out. But I have a few other questions since the website seems to indicate I might be SOL:

http://www.septa.org/fares/pass/transpass.html

A TransPass is valid for unlimited rides on any bus, trolley, subway or Norristown High Speed Line trip. (Additional payment required for travel on routes 123, 124, 125 & 150 and the Norristown High Speed Line). TransPasses not valid on Regional Rail Trains except for travel on Airport Line trains between CCP stations and Philadelphia International Airport. Not valid for travel between any two Center City Philadelphia stations.

Sale of a weekly TransPass begins Wednesday of the previous week through Tuesday of the valid week. Sale of a monthly TransPass begins 5 business days before the end of the month through five calendar days into the valid month.

Question 1: Does that only apply to regional rail within the CCP stations? Or does that mean I can't take subway/bus/etc. between CCP stations?

Question 2: Am I already screwed since they only sell them through Tuesday? I can't show up tomorrow at the airport and buy one?

(Sorry if these are stupid questions)

I'm no Philly mass transit fare expert but it does appear that you missed the Tuesday deadline. Keep this in mind,though...CC Philly is relatively compact, walking from Suburban Station(15th Street) to 11th Street is no big deal. The numbered streets run north/south, 2nd Street is near the Delaware River and 30th Street near the Schuylkill River. I like to walk and have walked that distance many times.

BTW, you're in a great location at the Windsor, on the Parkway. Your location on the west side of CC is the most picturesque, close to the museums, the Four Seasons Hotel(where the rich guys stay) the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul and the Comcast Center. You're a short walk south on 17th or 18th Street to Rittenhouse Square.

Our shuttle driver suggested we take the shuttle back to the airport (free, and we are about 2 miles away), then take the train to Broad St, get off and take the subway to the arena. Any flaws to this plan?

Just know the train schedule from the airport, which I think is every 30 min. That'll be $8.00 it seems, then it'll be $2.25 or 1 token to get to the arena. Similar trip back to the hotel.

Re: 2014 Frozen Four Info Thread

Sorry to be the inquisitive idiot again, but what are the camera policies at the F4?

If I have a DSLR, can I bring it in?
