Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

I was indeed one of the first 500 to purchase FF tickets so I will receive complimentary tickets to the Jan. 11th Wisconsin game:

looks like I was too, so I am wondering, if I was one of the 1st 500, apparently the preferred fans, or whatever you call them must not have been part of this deal, at least judging from the seats available, I could get good seats for the semi's or good seats for the final, but not both (good= up high between the blue lines) or maybe it was just the weird way they were offering them. I probably should have bought twice as many as I needed, keeping the best to use and selling the rest. Hopefully it will be OK to stand.

water bottle toss? how about having a well used Teddy Bear toss? you know, the ones you don't even want your dog to play with anymore

As a GWH season ticket holder, I bought my Frozen Four tickets on the first day of pre-sale (on Monday, 12/15). I'm sure many GWH season ticket holders did likewise. And today I received my freebie ticket for the Wisconsin game. But I doubt there were many FF ticket buyers from the fans of the other Gopher sports.

Standing at the railing shouldn't be an issue if you can find space.

But I'm still trying to figure out how many sentences you ran together in the part I quoted.

Although there are quite a few (like myself) who regularly do go the games who are not season ticket holders. Any of these folks who have season tickets to other Gopher sports (and/or who contribute to Gopher sports) have Gopher Points, which enabled them to buy FF tickets on the 18th. Based on my experience there were still a lot of good seats still available, as I was able to get Row 8 between the blue lines. If this FF is like the last one, the arena will eventually sell out, and people who show up without tickets will be paying a lot more than face value outside.

But isn't this always the case? ;)

Much easier to count the number of capital letters that were used. ;)

Or it could be like 2010, where the UMD/UM semi only drew a couple thousand and the Gopher-less final had far less. It kind of depends on how the team does over the second half, and how much media buzz is created.

Wait, seriously? I assumed this would be an easy sell out regardless...

Bad assumption. Had BC won in 2013, they'd have played BU in front of the one section of fans each of them could muster up, the 100 or so people like Hux and DC who go to all the FFs, and the 500 or 600 Gopher fans who are hardcore enough to show up and support the sport. Most of the rest could care less if the Gophers aren't playing, so you either need a team with some fan base around here ('Sconi') or a decent number of local alumni (maybe Harvard). Maybe if BC was trying to finish off an undefeated season this year that would bring some people for that novelty. But if you are playing Quinnipiac, don't expect anything more than half full.

Quoting myself here, just noting the key word "If".
I do think that if the Gophers do make it to the final, the game will sell out.

Wow. I guess QU did a great job for the final last year then.

I wouldn't go that far. Minnesota has just hosted too many times for the novelty factor to draw fans to a Gopher-less tournament. It's been held here in 1999, 2001, 2006, 2010, 2013, and now 2015. The only one the Gophers missed was 2001; UMD traveled much better in those days, so it only felt empty because it was in Mariucci. Duluth has hosted three times (2003, 2008, and 2012), and the one they didn't reach had UM vs UW in the title game, so no ghost town. Given there hadn't been one in the surrounding area since the one in Boston in 2009, I expected that last year would draw more people (not just sell tickets) than it did, because the title game last year looked nothing like a sellout, no matter how many people were standing by the rail.

I didn't mean it as a slight to Minnesota at all -- mostly (having gone to exactly 1 championship game ever) I thought that in a small-ish arena with civilization nearby like Minny or QU that the national championship game would just kind of naturally sell out. I guess the sport's just not there yet.

You're right that the novelty would have worn off by now in Minnesota. This year will probably be even worse given that last time, Minnesota was undefeated, and it was only 2 years ago.

For what it's worth the Clarkson vs. Minny crowd was announced as higher than capacity. It looked like a great crowd to me if not quite a sell out. But I'm used to BC crowds*.

*BC has 'crowds' in that 2's company, so therefore...

As a total side note I know that game stings for you guys but that was one of the most exciting hockey games I've ever watched.

I'll add that the Clarkson fan-base traveled well last year. They had a lot of fans in attendance.

I was one that avoided Ridder Arena for the 2010 final, and even with the novelty I didn't go to Mariucci for any of the games in 2001. Yes, I'm a homer.

I did watch the 2010 game on TV from the comfort on my own home -- when they still actually televised the game, rather than this web-streaming crap.

I would have skipped the UW-Hurst championship game in 2009 if I hadn't already bought the tickets. Given that I bought the all-session pass for this year, I'll probably attend even if the Gophers aren't in the game.

I didn't go to the 2009 Frozen Four even though it was down the street, but that was also because I didn't want to pay $40 or whatever to see 3 teams I hate play for a national championship.

The only way that could have been worse is if BU somehow made it instead of Minnesota, then I probably would have left the city for the weekend in protest of that 4 team monstrosity.

I do look forward to having a section to myself when the final this year is BC vs. QU :D:D:D

I would be very disappointed if it doesn't sell out and the Gophers are in it. Gopher attendance peaked with the streak, but has still been trending upward for a number of years. I think biggest challenge to sell out with Gophers in it, is that we are dependent on the young girls and their families and teams coming to the games. Marketing to them is built in to the regular season but not in the post season and NCAAs. I'd still bet on a sell out if Gophers are in.

Merry Christmas GWH and fans!

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back!

I didn't want to pay $40 or whatever to see 3 teams I hate play for a national championship.

doing the math, each game in the FF will cost me less than $6, I spent 25 per seat, with the $5 service charge and the $5 discount, and the free WI ticket ($8) that works out to $17 for 3 games, unless the Gophers don't make it and the Badgers do and I find my tickets are worth big bucks, I'll be there

I'm surprised they charged so little for the tickets, I guess they wanted to assure a sellout

comparing 2010 to now isn't accurate, they draw at least twice as big crowds now for regular season games

God yes. Right up against the glass beside the Minny goal for that Shannon MacAulay breakaway. That was electric.
