2014-2015 Minnesota State University, Mankato Season Thread: Shipping up to Boston?

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota State University, Mankato Season Thread: Shipping up to Bosto

Jaremko's rights were traded from Sioux City to Chicago this September, so he'll play for Chicago. Some idiot on the internet accidentally wrote he was traded from Chicago to Sioux City earlier this year though, which is likely the cause of the confusion.

As I posted earlier, there is a huge class coming in.

http://collegehockeyinc.com/stats/commitments.php

I understand that list but they all aren't coming in next year. I mean like who are we recruiting still n not committed yet. Peter Tufto n a couple kids from EGF would be nice gets for future classes.

So you expect them to publicly post (or comment on, or mention) the non-committed recruit targets? You realize that this is a huge NCAA infraction, right?

Yeah, I really have to stop reading his garbage;)

As much as I would love to see us start getting some great kids we see at the Tourney I just don't think we have done enough to establish our brand. UMD is still top draw up north along with UND and in the twin cities it's all Gophers. We need some more years like this one to start opening some doors. That said I think Hastings is getting the guys he wants plus he is a proven talent scout/coach with his time as GM/coach in the USHL. On that note MSU better be giving him a raise and locking him in because someday will come a job and we don't want to lose him.

So the kid who was voted the top player in the state of Minnesota doesn't tell you something? Our brand isn't improving? The Mavericks have their first commitment from a Mr. Hockey winner ever. Hockey hasn't ever been more popular across Southern MN, where record numbers for youth associations are all over. Hastings has recruited Canada and the USHL extremely well. He brought in the 8th ranked recruiting class in 2015. He's really struggling to improve the Maverick Hockey brand.

I, for one, am pretty happy with his recruiting so far!

I'm not saying that. All I was asking is if anyone knows of kids looking at MSU for hockey, cause Wisconsin beat writers do interviews with potential recruits. Hastings is doing great with recruiting n will get better with our new facilities.

Hastings got Zach Stepan from Hastings to come in 2 years ago, and CJ Franklin from Forest Lake to come in last year. You can argue he's not getting quantity from in-state, but he sure is getting quality.

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota State University, Mankato Season Thread: Shipping up to Bosto

I never said he wasn't recruiting well, actually I said I think he is getting the guys HE wants. Sure Id personally love all the best state players to commit here but I doubt Hasting wants them all. I have faith in him getting the guys he wants for his system, whether or not they are Mr. Hockey or just a 4th liner because he is a proven talent scout from his years in the USHL.(I said that earlier too) I have complete faith in Hastings to bring in the guys he needs to win. Getting Mr. Hockey is great but Minnesota has 2 of them, Wisconsin has 1 too. What good did it do for them.

As for our brand, Im a die hard Maverick fan as there is but go anywhere else and people don't know us. At the tourney this year a guy behind me asked what were "the Mavericks" and where do they play. This past fall when I went to St. Cloud the sporting goods store had UMD, SCSU, UofM, ND but "Mankato State? No nothing". 1 year at the top doesn't make your Brand great. Its a great start. Personally Id like the school/City to do better about getting people to the rink(I know tech sold out but some games were still lacking in attendance IMO), the telecast from home for many people is unbearable to watch (some games cut in and out, lag issues, and Ive seen a few post about people hating the commentary) and I think the Verizon Center definitely could do a bit better about lines, ticket prices (seems to me top area should cost something less then down at the bottom) etc. But its a learning curve for a school that's only been D1 for 15 years and starting to taste success.

I mostly agree with your comments... I'll add a few more.
  • Fairly young program and D1 history
  • School name change caused confusion (many people do not get it right). Some might know what 'Mankato state' is but doesn't know what 'Minnesota State' is. "Mankato State", "Mankato State University" and "Mankato University" is wrong! http://www.mnsu.edu/standards/name.html
  • I agree, I feel like the local community is not very engaged with the University athletics. An example: This year the football team was the best in the nation, and the stands at the playoff games were 2/3rds empty. I'm sure half of the people in Mankato had no idea the football team was remotely good. This hockey season is another good example: One of the best hockey teams in the nation, go show some support and get involved with the team!

The change was seventeen years ago. Seventeen years. People should be able to get used to something in seventeen years.

It's D-II. D-II football is never going to create a huge stir.

A sellout is about 10% of the total population of Mankato/North Mankato.

Congratulations to the Mavericks who earned all-WCHA honors.

COACH OF THE YEAR - Mike Hastings
FIRST TEAM - Matt Leitner & Zach Palmquist
SECOND TEAM - Bryce Gervais, Casey Nelson, & Stephon Williams
ALL-ROOKIE - CJ Franklin

And even though they didn't really announce it, congratulations to Williams as the WCHA goaltending statistical champion.

I graduated from MSU in 96, and I still will say Mankato State. I've actually gotten to the point where I'll either say Mavericks or Mankato instead of dealing with it. There are still news people up here in MSP that do as well.
