Re: 2014-2015 College Football Thread: A New Era Begins..

I know a lot of people don't like fancy uniforms, but I thought Maryland's were cool today. The helmet had an outline of Ft. McHenry, and had some script of presumably of the Star Spangled Banner, as did the shoulders of the jersey. Since this was the 200th anniversary of the poem Francis Scott Key wrote- that's pretty cool.

Too bad that didn't turn into a win.

I usually don't care for the MD jerseys, but those helmets were nice.

Maryland's jerseys were fabulous.

What a wacky, weird day of college football.

By the way, Texas, all of your problems will be solved if you steal Greg Davis from us here in Iowa City. Guaranteed. He's yours. Please. Take him.

Re: 2014-2015 College Football Thread: A New Era Begins..

There's almost no crossover between sporting rivalries. If they were, OSU would be a far bigger game in hockey, but WRT the B1G, it's 4th. And MAC schools in state I think are more interesting. Like if you played Western Michigan vs. Kent State- I bet more are interested in KSU.

Still, I'm sure the reported numbers will be higher than 100k- the game against Deleware a few years ago was empty, and still managed 100k.

As long as Michigan gets more in to its games verses how many people show up for the Slippery Rock game this year, they shouldn't sweat it too much. Then again, the Slippery Rock tickets are going at a fraction of what even the Appy State game tickets where going for. Maybe they need to figure out that they need to slash ticket prices a little to keep from pricing out people from coming to games.

I know right now, the two new members of the B1G are rivals, but it seems that Rutgers and PSU are actually rivals. Many of the players are from each other states- like rivals are. And even though they have not played a lot, there is a lot of emotion in the game.

Penn State has really not had a B1G rival- this seems like a real one.

There's a strong hate there, and I don't really get it. PSU leads the series 22-2 and their only real series was 20 years from the mid 70s to the mid 90s. Students don't remember it, but they hate each other. You'd think being in different conferences and barely playing each other would cool things.

Good win for BC, but I still hate them for causing the death of the Big East.

Get over it ) Life moves on and for the better. Coach Daz has brought back life at BC football but needs more time to build the program up again. Over 450 yards on the ground was amazing over #9 USC.

It works. It seems to be far more than anything you guys can have against PSU. That's what the last weekend is for.

But, then you guys are left without a last weekend rival, which blows.

Got any feelings for turtles? :)

At least it's a good looking trophy. The Land Grant Trophy looks like someone ripped a trophy mantle out of a 1980's den and pasted a couple pictures on it.

The bell is crooked. Seriously. They even copied the cooked-ness in the EA Sports College Football series.

A podcast I listen to was talking about how the rust belt states have seen rapid growth in population and there has been steady decline in the big ten areas such as Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, etc. and that is part of the reason the B1G is falling so far behind. (No question it starts with investment in coaching, more than just the head coach too.)

That goes deeper than just athletics.

Also, one does need to distinguish between long term and short term trends. Whether the football talent pool has been diminished in a long term sense is an interesting, complicated question. But I wouldn't overreact to what we've seen in September 2014. Conference strength tends to be cyclical, and it's pretty clear that more than one of the league's teams has hit a "valley." The future will include peaks.

Another factor to keep in mind: B1G Ticket sales and TV viewership have been strong over the years. That's great in many ways, but it does tend to lead to inflated expectations. Those inflated expectations can lead to frustrated ambitions in non-conference play and bowl games. IIRC, it was Lynah Fan who used the nicely chosen phrase "punching above your weight" a while back. Rather than assuming that some sort of massive societal decay is to blame, at least part of the story might be that we've been unrealistic in our expectations, fans and media alike. Consider the last decade or so. In hindsight, it's pretty clear that SEC Football achieved some separation from every other league, not just the B1G.
