2014-2015 College Football Thread: A New Era Begins..

Re: 2014-2015 College Football Thread: A New Era Begins..

When Michigan first started to slip, I was pointing and laughing - have always hated Michigan... especially in football.

Now that it's been so many years of mediocrity, I'm wishing they were still what they once were as it makes the B1G schedule more interesting to have another perennial power.

Wisconsin doesn't play Michigan with and regularity anymore, but I remember seeing a lot of great Michigan teams in person and I miss those days. Still remember a play where Tony Simmons (pretty sure) got away with a blatant push off in the endzone on Charles Woodson for a TD right below our seats. Michigan went on to win the game and Charles Woodson went on to be Charles Woodson, but it was fun to see that caliber of player in person.

The B1G (much like what the WCHA became before it was reborn) has become very anemic and watered down.

If by everything you mean on field product, I'm not sure what you've been watching. :D

I meant Minnesota...but the lack of being able to throw the ball against a decent defense is why this could be a very ugly football game. Michigan has turned the ball over more than anyone in the country, and Minnesota has taken away the second most or something?

I don't think that's a fair comparison. In the old WCHA right up until the end, we had 4-5 teams that had their share of talent and were ranked. Sure, the postseason success wasn't there during the final five years or so (save for UMD's title in 2011), but BC from 2007-2012 was the closest thing to a dynasty we're going to see in this era. Just because the Badgers had a bunch of .500 seasons doesn't mean the conference sucked as much as the B1G currently does. :p

Was referring to the bloated conference that resulted in us seeing less of Minnesota, Denver & NoDak and more of BSU and UNO.

When the B1G was 10 teams, Michigan and OSu were the teams you wanted to see in your stadium. When the WCHA was 10 teams, Minny and NoDak were the teams you wanted to see in your arena. With smaller conferences, we got those every year in hockey and every other year in football.

When expansion watered down the conferences, we saw less of those and more of the mid and bottom teams. Mid and bottom teams are fine - gotta pile up some wins of course - but not at the expense of the marquee match ups.

As nice of an addition as Nebraska is, it's really hard to stomach fewer Michigan, OSU, MSU, etc. matchups on account of ****ing Rutgers and Maryland, who mean absolutely nothing to me.

The last time I saw OSU play in Kinnick Stadium was 2010. I'll see the Buckeyes again 2017. That sucks.

Having Rutgers and Maryland in the Big Ten is like that Sesame Street game they'd play where there was a group of things and one of them didn't match. Except in this case there's two that don't match. Past additions of Nebraska and Penn State made a good bit of sense. This one will never make sense to me.

So what you're saying is it's a geographic issue. Right?

Re: 2014-2015 College Football Thread: A New Era Begins..

I sadly think the utter lack of QB play will doom the Gophers, even against a marginal UMi.

Re: 2014-2015 College Football Thread: A New Era Begins..

As we've seen, Rutgers is 100% anti-child rape and they got PSU's panties in a bunch because of that... I'm already warming up to them...
