2014-15 College Football Part II: SEC vs World

Re: 2014-15 College Football Part II: SEC vs World

Many years ago James Thurber wrote an essay about Ohio State getting their big, Polish fullback eligible for the big game. It came down to his economics class. And the question: "Name a form of transportation." As the big guy was searching for the answer, helpful students were going "woo woo" in the background. While others were making chugging sounds. Ultimately, after a long silence, the full back said "Train."

Reminds me of the UNC player during the recent academic scandal who “wanted to go into Engineering because he liked choo-choo trains.”

Uhhh... Are you stupid or just dumb?

The college system still prefers blowouts over close wins, no matter the teams. This game was a bit different, it being a playoff game. However, it's not like OSU was tossing it 30 yards downfield. Not saying it's right, but that's the way it is.

On the other hand, Rice, Duke and Air Force all went to bowl games this year. My great nephew, with a 3.8 gpa, will be playing for the Falcons starting next season. He's also 6'3" and 290.

No, Brent. It's a lot simpler. It's a doosh of a coach being a doosh.

(As did Stanford for the sixth straight season. :o And congrats to your nephew.)

Air Force (and the other service schools) always have my respect. Not only do they have to train to serve their country, but they also have to maintain good grades, AND train for their respective sports on top of that. How they manage their time and still compete at that level....amazing.

The win over Auburn and Ohio State steamrolling Alabama and Oregon makes me feel a lot better about the B1G championship game.

As freshmen they're probably the only football players on God's green earth who look forward to two a days. A break in the routine, don't you know.

One of the most touching things I've ever seen occurred several years ago during the pre game show for Army/Navy. They were interviewing the Navy QB, a bright, articulate handsome kid you'd be proud to have as your son, and they asked him what the game meant to him. He lost it completely. Not just choked up. I mean, he broke down, couldn't answer. Beautiful. These service academy kids aren't perfect, but they're about as close as we have a right to expect. To say I'm proud of my great nephew is to understate it by quite a bit. I've told him his AF career will help expunge my record.

Disappointed that the Big 10 won. I guess the bright side is that this has to **** off the d-bags of Ann Arbor.

Still two minutes left but I'll go ahead and declare OSU champions. Big year for the Big Ten. Three NYD bowl wins, including two NY6 and then the national championship on top of all that. Depending on how the polls shake out it could be two top five teams.

If I had a final poll it would be

1. OSU
2. Oregon
3. Bama
4. TCU
5. MSU
6. FSU
7. Baylor
8. GaTech
9. UCLA
10. Georgia

AP Poll is out. Big Ten officially has two Top 5 teams.

1. OSU
2. Oregon
3. TCU
4. Bama
5. MSU
5. FSU (tied, for whatever reason FSU is listed behind despite a better overall and alphabetical)
7. Baylor
8. GaTech
9. Georgia
10. UCLA

Wasn't that a 6 point game with less than 5 minutes left?

The Buckeyes went through Oregon like crap through a goose. If they hadn't had so many turnovers, they would have scored 60. No question or doubt about the better club. OSU by a mile.

Awesome night last night. Proud to be from Ohio State. Proud to be from the Big Ten.

I kind of like the touchdown at the end.. Sending a message saying OSU and the B1G are back.
Well, it was a satisfying exclamation point. As a team and a conference, we've been on the receiving end of a megaton of disrespect in recent years. "Unstoppable To The End" felt really good.

To those taking the other point of view on the last touchdown: You have a point. A very small point, but yes: When the Oregon defense committed the offside penalty on 4th and short, it was then possible to kill the remaining time by taking knees. But that was the first moment that was the case. Right up until then, taking knees would have meant giving the ball back. And choosing to give the ball back on downs would have been both unnecessary and dumb.

With the first down in hand, the Buckeyes ideally would have let the game end on the Oregon two yard line. But let's be clear: The "controversy" concerns a two yard rushing play between the tackles. To be seriously upset about those two yards strikes me as rather petty. Call it excessive celebration if you want. My answer is a Joey Bosa Shrug.

In contrast, Brent's comment is worth a moment's reflection. Despite the improved playoff system, the incentive to earn style points remains a serious problem. But after considering it, I simply don't believe that impressing next year's voters had anything to do with last night's final touchdown. It was a celebratory moment, not a calculated one.
