If it's all true as written... I'd be about the least surprised person in the world.


Look at the outcry over the Duck Dynasty imbecile. Chick-fil-a (sp?). Necks and bigots demand their right to be ignorant! The uneducated/neck portion of my family has been sharing "Free Phil" crap on Facebook for a couple of weeks now.

We haven't come as far as a society as some think and my guess is that locker rooms will be some of the last bastions of homophobia to fall, if they ever do. The sad part is that this was from the top, not the players.


I admire Kluwe for his stance and willingness to put himself out there. Not sure about the tone of this article though. If it's all true though, he probably figures what the heck. If he doesn't get sued for slander (and lose), I will assume it was true.

Thing is...the Vikings would have to prove what Chris said to be false in order to win a slander/libel suit. And they'd have to prove that Priefer isn't a bigot.

He was asked to be respectful...to whom? Respectful to straight people only? Catholics only? It was his personal account. They shouldn't have made that comment in their release.

He also is naive if he thought some fans wouldn't complain to the team, some sponsors might also complain and there might be some repercussions. Not saying those fans are right, but lets say a few companies said they were going to cancel their sponsorship or superbox contracts if the players on the team were going to start antagonizing a subset of the population.

That being said, they can replace him whenever and with whoever they want. They could replace him with Lady Gaga and run fake punts every time...if his punts were average but he was at a 6th year salary, maybe they didn't want to pay him that much for a decline over the next few years.

Did the draftee get paid more and did he kick better? Would like to know those two answers.

And can't wait til somebody gets the owner to comment...sounds like he has friends and contacts that are supportive of gay rights...will he support the team, say he never knew why they cut the punter, claim ignorance, say what he said to Kluwe??

It's basically the same situation as the Duck Dynasty dude...only the other side of the coin.

Chris Kluwe made a little over $1.6m in 2012. Had 72 punts for an average of 45.0 yards with only 2 touchbacks and 18 inside the 20. His net yards/punt was 39.7.

Jeff Locke made just under $500k in 2013. Had 75 punts for an average of 44.2 yards with only 3 touchbacks and 23 inside the 20. His net yards/punt was 40.0.

So, 1 more touchback in 3 more punts, but 5 more inside the 20. Locke's average was slightly below Kluwe's, while Locke's net was slightly better.

Considering that Locke made more than a million less than Kluwe, and Locke's stats were quite similar to Kluwe's, I would say you are right on. They basically got the same production (some may argue better production) for a million dollars less. Seems like it was a good personnel decision on Minnesota's part to let him go.

That being said, I tend to believe that Kluwe got cut as a result of both his average ability+above average salary, along with his "controversial" attitude.

Except he states that he dialed back his punts on the coaching staffs orders. So it kinda throws the stats into question (if true).

Well, FWIW, he had one of his best statistical seasons in 2012 (best net yards/punt and best touchback percentage of his career, along with above average yards/punt).

At the end of the day, Kluwe was making nearly double the NFL average for punters, despite being an average NFL punter. That equals getting cut in the NFL.

That's why I was a little miffed by his tone. Would have been enough to call out the bigotry and suppression without the sour grapes.
