2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Well...Phil is going to have to pull off his own "this deserves a plack" shot now, otherwise its 2nd place finish #6.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Chants of "Let's Go Phil" echoing around the 18th green.

Looking like Phil will be looking at his 6th runner up in the US Open. Unreal.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

I got home in time to watch the last 3 or 4 holes. Followed it on the radio up until then. One thing is for sure....There is no problem with using Merion as a US Open venue, that course is definitely up to the task of providing a US Open caliber challenge. I believe the USGA tries to setup the US Open so that even par is the winning score, I'd say they did an excellent job this weekend.

I love that Phil got 2nd place again. Too Funny!!!! I was rooting for Mahan the last day, but it seemed like the pressure got to him late, hopefully he's better the next time he's in that situation. I don't mind seeing Rose win, he deserves it, and he's been waiting a while. He seems like a good enough guy. Also, its only a matter of time before Jason Day finishes one of these majors...he's there very often now, and the guy is pretty **** good.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

What impressed me about Merion was that it was "old school" golf, all the way to the players using a member's home as their dining room.

(Mike) Weir’s mood was light all week and on Thursday he got a laugh when he told a story about having breakfast inside a Merion member’s house. Part of the outside-the-box thinking that brought the U.S. Open to such a small venue included the idea to use a private home as part of the player’s locker area.

Weir explained that while he was eating breakfast on the couch alongside the pet dogs, one of the family’s children joined him and grabbed the remote.

“We were watching Sportscenter and he flipped over to the Golf Channel,” he said on Thursday.

On Sunday, Weir said he had the place to himself.

“I was actually in there solo today,” he said “The family is phenomenal to have those people over there let us all in there, it was awesome.”

Did you have the remote?

“I did, I did,” Weir said.

Yep. They were remarking on ESPN last night how, IF the US Open were to return to Merion, it would not be the course that could raise issues. The course more than showed it held up to the test the USGA wants. It was the infrastructure/logistics in having 25,000 people showing up every day, with the community and nearby universities/schools/etc allowing use of their properties for parking and "headquarters". They are the ones who truly made this US Open a big success, and will be needed to do the same should the tournament return to Merion again.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

90 minute Sales presentation at 10:45 tomorrow followed by a 2:47 tee time at Grand Pines. Hope the weather holds (HA!).

Report tomorrow night.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Ok folks here we go. The sales presentation went over by an hour so I rushed to the course.

Did somebody say Florida courses are different than MD courses?? Lots of sand and the bunkers were deep and soft.

Lost 6 balls and the score counts them (OK mookie? :))

777 377 448 (53)
675 756 676 (52) 105

Played the gold tees (6,070 yds)

The 8 on hole 9 was the result of an impacted ball in a bunker whose face looked like the White Cliffs of Dover. After 2 tries went out the back and tried again.

Loved the Grand Pines. Well laid out and each cart had a GPS that made it easier to hit the ball where I did not want to.

LOL. Sounds like the round Mrs. P and I "enjoyed" at Superstition Springs in Tempe. Without a sales pitch. :D

Steve

Had a blast. Topped about 4 fairway shots and line drived about 8 iron shots. Two putted all but 5 greens. If I was a better ball striker I may have busted 90.

It's all operator error. Need to spend more time on the range getting dialed in (again!!)

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

You know the course is going to be interesting when you go to change and see a locker with Ernie Els on it.

There was also one for Frank Noblio. :)

2300 yards but you had to hit the fairway or you get punished.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Sigh. I am so broke right now I cant afford to get out and play even 9 holes. I have had to resort to playing my old Tiger Woods 06 on gamecube and that gets boring when you can birdie every hole and arent actually there playing the courses.

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Rained out from my usual Sat morning round. Stay home and scrape the house. How's that for a double whammy?

Golf is a game of inches.....the toughest four are between the ears. —Arnold Palmer

Truer words have never been spoken. :)

I should have kept my mouth shut. My game is so messed up right now that I am ready to put the clubs in the attic - or the lake.

I have lost any semblance of confidence in all aspects of my "game" to the point that it's not fun being out there with my golf league or my wife.

Two years ago my scores and my handicap were heading down -- today I'm embarrassed to post my scores.

I quit playing when I was in my 20s because of my frustration with the game. I don't want to repeat that again.

Speaking of my golf league, we took a road trip today to a semi-private course near Altoona. The gold (middle) tees were about 1000 yards shorter than the white tees, and all but two were in the same spot as the red (forward) tees. Why bother even having gold tees?
