2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

I'm also in favor of the ban. However, there are a lot of old geezers, that can't lean over any longer. They are making a lot of noise to their pro, and they are a large portion of the clientele lets be honest.
I think maybe you ban it for any tournament play, but allow it otherwise. That way if you are a serious about competitive golf it's not allowed but if you are a duffer it's ok. But i'm in favor of bifurcation too so..

I agree completely. What difference does it make for a double-digit handicapper playing his local muni whether he has the legal or illegal grooves in his wedge or whether or not he anchors his putter against his rapidly expanding belly?

In the big scheme of life, no big difference. In as much as handicaps, slopes etc. are determined by the collective performance of all players, it seems they should be competing on roughly equal terms relative to equipment. I wouldn't want to mix red, white and gold tees when comparing courses or scores and I wouldn't want to come in second in a scramble because the guys in front of me are using superballs instead of approved golf balls.

I would submit that making accomodations for fat people would lead to further "particpation medal" thinking re: golf equipment. If allowed to evolve unchecked, who knows what the guy teeing off before you is going to be doing in 5 years? I think an unapproved set of grooves can change the approach to nearly every hole...if the guy next to me has a better chance of sticking his wedge on a sloped green, that is a big advantage in my book. That screws up every skins game, every $2 a hole friendly game etc. And who determines how old, fat or bad you have to be to take advantage of the rule?

If belly putters are allowed to improve scores, why not lay down and use a pool stick or put marks on the green for your line? Sorry for the pun, but I think it is a slippery slope.

In contrast, nobody is sure the scores submitted by most golfers are accurate anyway...if people can routinely use foot wedges, improve their lie and not impose penalties for infractions then I don't know if equipment variation provides statistically significant variances.

Well there is no question in my mind that these putters do in fact lower your score. I also think the manufacturers are chomping at the bit with equipment that is non conforming. So yes it is a very slippery slope. I wonder what the brits are saying about it.

Screw them, we already whipped them once...if they try to protect the belly putter I scream "augmentation without representation"!! I suggest we dress up as caddies and throw somebody's belly putter in the ocean (or pond... ocean or pond, whatever works for you).

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

This time around though, I don't believe that the manufacturers will just up and stop producing the clubs that will be "Illegal".... They'll keep selling them until Joe Six-Pack stops using them... That's why I think that this is such a sensitive issue for the USGA... I think they are starting to realize that they don't really mean a whole lot to most golfers in this country...

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

Does this all seem backwards to anyone else? It seems like we should be seeing the USGA wanting to keep anchored putters in order to grow the game for the everyday players and the PGA Tour banning them to keep with the traditions of the game and maintain a level playing field.

Just bought a Cobra Amp Cell driver and two Amp Cell hybrids. I'm bringing Mookie to my club and need all the ammo I can get!

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

On Feherty last night Jack Nicklaus said he thought the ball ought to be shortened 20%, and that that would bring 17,000 obsolete golf courses back into the mainstream. I totally agree.! But I wonder if it will happen?

Nicklaus has been pushing that for I bet 20 years. It even goes back to when he was playing. I think it really started at a time when technology in clubs, especially metal drivers, started to develop. A lot of the great course, including some he designed, were becoming "obsolete" in the eyes of some commentators, and course designers such as Nicklaus.

He has a point, but it's not going to happen. Probably 80% of all technology advances in club design are eyed towards increasing distance. People love watching the pros drive the ball out of sight. There is no way some weekend player who can still hit it 250 yards is interested in going back to 220 yard drives. It's too easy for most courses just to push the tees back another 20 or 30 yards.

Anyone have experience regripping clubs? How hard is it to do yourself with the Golf Smith Kits?

It's not that difficult using the kit. Just be sure to use enough fluid to allow you to properly position the grips before the glue dries

Re: 2013 Golf Season - Does it leave you scratching?

you can't drop them off at golfsmith or something? they will get it done in 15 minutes and it's not that much. i got the iron regripped in jan before i went south and it was 4.25 a club (i think if you buy the kit and all it almost works out the same).

Nearest Golf Smith is three hours away and I really don't mind the time.

Michael Breed just showed how to regrip clubs tonight on the Golf Channel.

I've done it and it was no issue. Most challenging thing is if the new grips have alignment markings on them...you need to make sure you get them lined up properly before they set. I put them on with no tape or fluid and made a small mark with a sharpie on the grip and the shaft just to make sure I could line them up quickly and didnt turn them slightly while putting them down etc.

Maybe an hour to 1.5 hours of work.

If you cover the tape well with mineral spirits and slosh it around in the grip before putting it on, you will have plenty of time to position the grip. Putter grips are the most sensitive to alignment, of course, but even they shouldn't be a problem.
