2013 Cycling Thread

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Il Killer di Spoltore has raced twice this year, both last weekend. In the first he was a beast riding for Santabrogio and still had enough to come 10th. Then in an Italian sprinter classic he finished 6th I think. In short he is riding very well for someone who was without a team until last weekend.

Not a surprise. I actually expect him to do quite well, but the humor for me lies in the same vein that would find picking Ricco funny were he ever to return. The guy is a goof, though Ricco is in a league of his own on that one. Anyway, I suspect my team is actually, for real this time, final:

Vincenzo Nibali AST 22
Ryder Hesjedal GRS 20
Franco Pellizotti AND 10
Jarlinson Pantano COL 6
Mark Cavendish OPQ 16
Carlos Betancur ALM 8
Darwin Atapuma COL 4
Mauro Santambrogio VIN 6
Juan Jose Cobo MOV 8

Crazy sprint to end the stage! Big split caused by, I think Cannondale, but Cav was incredible beating Viviani and Bouhanni.

That was pretty wild. The guy is unstoppable save for a crash or getting truly boxed in. Sounds like the split was due to a crash, which I thought was within the final 3k but sounds like the second group is showing at +18". Is that all due to time bonuses? I forget what they are at the moment.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

There are bonuses for all stages except TTs. It will probably eventually get evened out. Unless they decided it was a split not a crash.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

The SKY way.

Ryder Hesjedal GRS
Bradley Wiggins SKY
Rigoberto Uran SKY
Tiago Machado RLT

Notes on beIn's coverage.

Well, they certainly hadn't learned what not to do from seeing how Versus and others have done cycling over the years.

Overwrought, histrionic, grandiose opening sequence? Check
Bimbo blonde studio host? Check. At least she's hot.
Clueless, awkward 'segue to the action' host? Check

At least Carlton Kirby and Dan Lloyd are top notch. And the pictures were brilliant. Except you don't cut to a crash at the back of the pack during the last 2k of a sprint finish.

A few note on your critique rufus. I kind of like the intro, then got terrified when the blonde started to talk, and absolutely horrified when the studio host started talked. Neither had clue 1 about cycling. The Kirby and Lloyd took over and I instantly felt better. As for the cut to the crash, that isn't BeIN. That is RAI, the home country broadcaster controls all the pictures.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

What a freakin' stage. Just when it looks like the Fantini rider(love those guys) might just make it for a solo finish, the pack ups the tempo and erases his lead in like a kilometer or two. And then all the fireworks among the GC guys. Amazing, simply amazing stage.

Why I love the Giro so. And the pictures, just fabulous. I can't remember which was the last Giro versus showed, maybe 2006 when Basso screwed over Simoni(at least according to Gibo) and won his first? Even though I don't have HD service, these pictures are brilliant, especially since I've only been able to watch the Giro on the computer these last number of years. Nice to see it on the big screen.

Maybe a little too close by some of the camera bikes, but wow. And not just the racing either, Italy is just such a beautiful country, and even the time trial stage on the island, where it seemed every open space was covered by villas and hotels, it still looked gorgeous. Certainly not good old American urban sprawl.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

You mean Extra-terrestial Basso? AKA RoboBasso?

Anyway great stage, hoping for more of the same on stage 7. And the Vini Fantini guy should be attacking every day and hopefully Santa will be there at the end. In fact I think he has a shot at the stage tomorrow if Scarponi isn't given some freedom.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Little late to the party here since I usually have to hide from news and watch the weekday stages late in the evening, but agree with most everything that's been said. I think the coverage is quite solid despite the goof in the studio -- and the camera work is indeed superb. It's far better than last year, which I believe was on USN. It was on somewhere here as I know I watched it. Since the feed comes from Italy it appeared whatever network it is really upped its game this year.

And what a great stage yesterday. Obviously entertaining, and all the credit goes to the stage design. I'm glad we're just getting started. This made me think about the TDF stages -- am I the only one who thinks the race is becoming somewhat stale? Compared to the Vuelta and Giro as of late, the stage designs rarely seem to promote the sort of racing we saw yesterday. There are exceptions of course -- perhaps I'm just a bit testy because I think they really dropped the ball on the 100th edition route. It's not horrible, but considering the potential that was there I don't think it's very special at all.

Back to the Giro, I found it interesting that Hesjedal took a bunch of heat for that small attack yesterday. What's the problem with it? He's not trying to open up a ten minute gap there. At the time I figured he was merely testing the other GC guys to see how they would react, plus upping the tempo if you're capable certainly can only hurt the other guys. Vaughters more or less confirmed on twitter that putting Sir Wiggo into red early and often, even if for short bursts like yesterday, is the plan as far as taking an axe to Sky goes. I'm also a bit surprised that Nibali didn't get more aggressive on the descent. Him, Evans, Hesjedal and many others are far more capable than Wiggins on the downhill and time bonuses are going to add up. Drill him as much as possible, imo, since he's going to take a decent chunk of time on the long ITT. Even if you don't open up a real time gap on him...make him suffer and work.

Today's stage should also (did also?) prove rather exciting and that final climb might offer our first look of who the real top contenders are, though of course I won't watch it until later. And now...the cycling news embargo resumes...

Any time I see an awesome descent I always think of this video. Not overly technical but the camera work is great:

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

Another good stage today with Sir Wiggo dropping time. Tomorrow will be fin too. There is a 10% climb before the final climb to the finish that likely will distance some sprinters and leave it for the stage hunters/strong men. Speaking of descents, there are two that spark my imagination...
Il Falco saving his maglia rosa on Colle delle Finestre (The descent starts at 58 minutes with Falco down 2:23):

And David Arroyo descending Mortirolo:

Cavendish wins again, but I'm thinking I should have taken Viviani for a mere eight points. The point differential between the two at the end isn't going to be worth the eight point cost difference. Were it not for the crash yesterday the logic would be even more tilted in Viviani's favor.

Hey Apollonio got the top 10 placing I was hoping for!

Tomorrow stage should be good. Hope the GC guys don't decided to save energy for the TT on Sat.

Yeah, I spiked the same thing from Atapuma which I'm pleased with, and I wasn't even expecting anything from him until the bigger mountain stages. Good point re tomorrow's stage - I hadn't thought of that until you mentioned it. Read this earlier today and I feared that the top GC guys will sit together tomorrow because of the TT, as you mention. Then again, when paired up with what Vaughters said earlier in the week maybe it's a bit of sandbaggery. I'm sure we'll see some fireworks tomorrow, but strictly for entertainment purposes I hope some of them come from the GC guys.

Re: 2013 Cycling Thread

I am fairly certain that the final climbs are some of the same climbs that cause so much damage in Tirreno-Adriatico. The ones where Nibali and Purito (I think) destroyed the Sky train end when on for the win. There are a couple of 10%+ walls in there and Wiggo has shown weakness in classic type stages, so...
