2013-2014 Women's D-I PairWise Contentions and Affirmations

Re: 2013-2014 Women's D-I PairWise Contentions and Affirmations

I don't think it's crazy to go RMU #7 and UND #8 even with a WCHA final loss. You just have to recognize that the TUC criterion is worthless. You're saying the one team that's beaten the #1 team has a disadvantage against the teams under consideration. It's just all unintentional irony at this point.

I don't have the schedules in front of me. Mercyhurst apparently loses CommOpp agaisnt UND, in spite of being 5-2-2 versus UND 6-6. Can you tell me how that works? Obviously it is in who they played how many times, but I just don't have it in front of me.

And, again, for me, I think the teams on the bubble are so tight, that any interpretation by the committee will have do be acceptable.

Re: 2013-2014 Women's D-I PairWise Contentions and Affirmations

Here's the Mercyhurst vs. UND common opponent comparison:

vs. Minnesota State: Mercyhurst 1-1, UND 2-2
vs. Clarkson: Mercyhurst 1-0-1, UND 1-1 (+.25 for Mercyhurst)
vs. Lwood: Mercyhurst 3-0-1, UND 2-0 (+.125 for UND)
vs. OSU: Mercyhurst 0-1, UND 1-3 (+.25 for UND)

Thank you!

I don't really know how the committee evaluates things, but I think for myself that the straight numbers favor UND here, but it really looks like a wash when you examine it like that. The real difference is in the OSU games, and I think that 0-1 and 1-3 are not too far apart really.

Especially when you think about today's game RIT/MU. RIT won, sure, but it took 62 saves to do it. That game doesn't relate at all to UND or MU v OSU, but rather illustrates the closeness of such a comparison.

I don't envy the committee its job. Weighing all that out looks really hard to me.

Re: 2013-2014 Women's D-I PairWise Contentions and Affirmations

This is basically why UND has a good KRACH and not a good PWR.

Minnesota record vs. not-UND: 32-0-1
Minnesota record vs. UND: 3-1

Wisconsin record vs. not-Minnesota/UND: 25-1-1
Wisconsin record vs. UND: 2-2-1

And UND basically gets worse than nothing for this in the selection process. It's completely idiotic.

Granted, against not Minnesota/Wisconsin, UND has only been about as good as the other bubble teams.

Re: 2013-2014 Women's D-I PairWise Contentions and Affirmations

If I'm the committee deciding the bubble teams, I put all the weight on common opponents and ignore TUC (nonsense) and RPI (meaningless differences). Pick RMU and North Dakota over Quinnipiac and Mercyhurst. Complete mess. I'm sure they'd love for UND and BU to get autobids so they don't need to make this decision.

And, then do the bracket and send UND right back against UM next week at Ridder Arena. More of a complete mess. And that happens regardless of whether or not UND or BU win, because UND can bus to Minnesota, but nowhere else, so the "save money" rule goes into effect.

I think that is the big reason I hope this doesn't happen. I can't really see a dime's worth of difference between any of the 4 schools, but I know that in the big picture, it can't be right at all for Minnesota and UND to play 6 times again this year. YUCK!!!

No, may Minny win 7-0 tonight, and whoever wins tomorrow, and may the committee select anyone other than UND. And, may it be that either Mercyhurst or RMU go to Clarkson, so we don't have an East side and West side of the bracket....

That's my 2 cents.

It does suck playing Minnesota so often, but if UND can pull out a win tonight the committee would no doubt send them to the Ridder. I see that being better than say Robert Morris getting smoked after flying to the cities? Either way, UND could have avoided this win or go home scenario.

Will RMU and Mercyhurst's losses this weekend drop them out of the picture?

Well, if UND wins tonight, they have earned their spot via auto-bid. I rather think that would put them 7th anyway, but they would play at Ridder, no doubt. Some reward. Beat Minnesota, then have to do it again.

What I really don't want to see is Minny win, and then have to play UND again next week anyway, because the committee interpreted the criteria in a way so as to put them in the field. That 7-10 in the PWR is just a mess, period. Yuck!!!

if they don't belong in the tournament then why fear playing them? ;)

but yes, what a mess!

Re: 2013-2014 Women's D-I PairWise Contentions and Affirmations

I'm thinking that Harvard will be rooting for Minnesota tonight. Another auto bid from a bubble team could push the Crimson out of the NCAAs. I'm guessing BC is either 4th or 5th, if Clarkson wins tomorrow they are #3 or possibly #2, Wisco #3 or #4 and Cornell #6. I'm not seeing any room for Harvard in these scenarios given RIT won and again, if UND wins, see ya later Crimson?

No auto bid for RIT.

And I would go so far as to say that Harvard is now safely in the field. However, no way to know where they might play next week. It will all depend on BC and Clarkson/Cornell. Could be Madison, Potsdam or Ithaca.

Re: 2013-2014 Women's D-I PairWise Contentions and Affirmations

Whoops, okay. Does this mean that Mercyhurst and RMU are still alive for the NCAAs?

Yes it does. WCHA game just went final: Minn 3, UND 1. dave1381 notwithstanding, that likely ends UND's chances. There are 4 teams left for 2 spots.
BU gets in only if they beat BC.
Then, Mercyhurst, RMU and Quinnipiac are in the running for the other 1 or 2 berths. There is lots of discussion here about how to decide that. Suffice it say for this post that we don't envy the committee.

Re: 2013-2014 Women's D-I PairWise Contentions and Affirmations

We know they're in: Boston College, Clarkson, Cornell, Harvard, Minnesota, Wisconsin

Now, just 1 idiot's opinion...

2 REMAINING SLOTS (assumes BC over BU, not a given, but probable): Choose between Mercyhurst, North Dakota, Quinnipiac, Robert Morris
Mercyhurst and Quinnipiac should probably go based on total body of work and both finished strong.
Having said that, North Dakota is the team that could actually get to the championship game. Unfortunate if they don't get in top 8.
Sorry RMU, I think the last half swoon killed your chances.

well I suppose there is some fear, if you play a team often enough, eventually they will beat you

but really it is more of boredom, 6 times last year, 5 times this year

c'mon already, I would like to see a team I haven't seen them play
