When the #1 team in the country and its local media, and fans are wildly celebrating the fact that they managed to rally to get a tie against you, at home, at the last minute ..... that says it all. :) The real story here is that we were a few seconds away from sweeping #1 St. Cloud . . . .

Bingo!

What a great start. No better preparation for the second half than to match us up against St. Cloud. Coach RB challenged the team with this five game stint and they "rose to the occasion" and along the way defeated a pair of top 5 teams. A remarkable group of young men, of selfless upperclassman, of team leaders, who continue to refuse to accept defeat as an option. They are a great tribute to the school. They are a class act. As Alumni we are very very proud and happy they decided to come to Union then go somewhere else.

Some very good photo's http://www.uscho.com/recaps/2013/12/14/no-1-st-cloud-state-rallies-to-tie-no-10-union/.

Noticed St. Cloud had cheerleaders .... never saw that before. Big ice in Schenectady would be nice.

I remember back in the D3 days when Union hosted the nationals and the Bemidji Beaver cheerleaders accompanied them, I guess they are still big in the midwest. Needless to say they were crowd pleasers.

Great weekend of hockey. Last night was a thriller for sure, and these were 2 teams could very well meet up again in the playoffs. The goaltending has been rock solid, and Stevens was sensational last night. While I would have enjoyed a sweep, that last goal by St. Cloud will really put a burr under the saddle going into the winter break, and this will help in the long run.

I'd settle for a video board, stadium seating and some real bathrooms!

One thing I am beginning to realize is that IMO ECAC goaltending may be some of the best in college hockey. St Cloud goalie was supposed to be all world and he was ok, but we managed 6 goals off him in two nights, along with one on the backup.

Who knows - maybe this team is on to something. This might improve the rankings a bit.

And yes, I'm back.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

Congrats --- impressive weekend - Wednesday night game, early morning flight Thursday, playing the #1 team and leaving with a win and a tie.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

Terrible last penalty call there. We would have swept without that gift from the refs!

Wow - have been meaning to post here for a while. Your boys are playing great. Keep it up and best of luck (until you play RPI again). Love they way you play...relentless. Kudo to the team and the staff.

I think it's a combination of that and Union's offense just being really good. Union has scored at least three goals in all but two games this season. The exceptions were Oct 19 (LSSU) and Oct 25 (UConn). They still scored twice in each.

Speaking of arena enhancements, has anyone here followed the program long enough to remember that planned three-sheet, 3500 seat facility down the road from Union? This is going back 1997 or so. I was reading about it the other day - pretty fascinating. Considering how far the program has grown since, I have to think there may be some regrets not getting involved with that kind of facility when they had the chance. The cost to do so would be much higher now.

One thing I always say when rink improvements come up is that I would rather attend a game in a sold out 2000 seat rink than a game that's only 1/2 to 3/4 full in a larger rink. Look at some of the teams that play in borderline pro rinks and how many actually fill the place? I watched some of the CC and Wisconsin game in what appeared to be a great venue...and they didn't appear to draw flies. My thoughts are that we should update and enhance Messa as it is...and not push for a flashy rink and lose the home ice advantage that comes from the on campus experience.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

I would not expect an off campus facility. In addition to the cost, it is out of character for the college. I think an upgrade of Messa is likely the only viable alternative, even if it means losing some seating. If capacity is reduced, it will make it a harder ticket to get and likely increase ticket sales and sellouts. I was pretty impressed with the recent crowds especially with the students on break. There were just under 2,000 for Dartmouth, for a midweek game during semester break. The current facility is woefully inadequate if not potentially dangerous and I am hopeful that something constructive is near which will address these issues and maintain the current atmosphere which makes it such a challenge for visiting teams. Of course I've been harboring the same hope for the past 10 years. :(

I didn't comment on the games in St. Cloud this weekend, but this sums up how I feel: If you had told me before the weekend that we'd go 1-0-1, I would have been very happy. Having said that, being 20 seconds away from a weekend sweep against the #1 team in the country and not being able to close it out is extremely disappointing. I'm not complaining in at all (how could anyone complain about Union's play over the past 4 weeks?), but to come that close and not get the win hurts just a bit.

This has been a hell of a first half and I look forward for what's in store for this team in 2014. Hopefully this season will be a special one -- We got a taste of the Frozen Four in 2012 and I think I speak for everyone when I say we are craving a return.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

How do we win only 38% of face offs and do so well! puzzling! 6 different players scored this weekend , that's tough to defend against. Perhaps more face off wins more shots on net more scoring opportunities, more goals. solutions anybody?

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

I'm more worried about the PK than faceoffs.

Union is 55th out of 59 D1 teams in PK at 75.4%. In their 10 game unbeaten streak, the Dutchmen PK is just 71.4%. Over the last five, the PK is 66.6%.

The team is excelling in spite of it for now, but that's not a number you can be comfortable with long-term.

Obviously, the positives far outweigh the negative with this team, but it has its warts like any other.
