Also, hats off to Alex. I was very nervous with him starting tonight. This win should be a huge confidence booster for him.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

That was almost anticlimactic. We've got ourselves two goalies. Not all that impressed with Saint Cloud, might just have been an off night but I think our better speed had something to do,with that especially on D. We withstood their spurt the second half of the middle period and somehow came out fresh again for the third. Tomorrow will no doubt be even tougher but we got the win we needed and deserved.

We also won a big one for the ECAC ....
and
the only two teams that beat Ferris State this year, St. Lawrence and Colgate

IMHO, from watching it on the internet, the team 3 stars were poise/confidence ( same thing, applies to Alex too ), great positional play, great team speed. Great win , hope we are filling the tank back up for tomorrow night. Actually team didn't look tired at all , in the post game interview Bodie looked great. This was certainly a great team win, big KUDOS all around. As I write this I must not forget the coaching staff, great prep, nice even keel out there tonight.

This SLU fan salutes U. Big Win. Congrats. Beating #1 on the road feels good. We did it last year at Q=Pac, but this is even better since you did it out west where they look down on us. Now please Sweep!!;)

Very well said.. Union looked surprisingly comfortable on the big ice surface and their positioning was almost flawless. Other than a couple hail-mary passes and some individual moves by SCSU forwards U allowed almost no odd man rushes. I had thought that we might see Alex in one of these last 3 games and was great to see him have a good night. Its actually kinda interesting with the bigger ice surface, the puck doesn't move as quickly from side to side so Alex's sometime lack of lateral mobility wasn't tested as much. A big win and huge congrats to the team & coaches!! This will help come PWR time.

Its obvious that SCSU is very fast and skilled and will likely have a lot to prove tomorrow night. Boys will have to have A game tomorrow too. I did think the reffing was "strange" to say the least and several penalty calls were very borderline, but hey I'm used to that with ECAC refs and can't complain about home-cooking tonight. Overall an entertaining game to watch and I'm really starting to believe that the speed on this team, particularly on the blueline, is what is making them so hard to play against.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

Recap: Dutchmen down top-ranked Huskies, 4-1

http://bit.ly/18rgyIu

Very impressive performance on the road against a top-ranked team. Fatigue, big ice, none of it seemed to matter. There was a time in the second period where SCSU could have turned the game around, but the period ended at the right time for Union, and the Dutchmen came out and put it away in the third.

Needless to say, 'Sak had his breakout performance tonight. It was about as big of a test as you could have given him, and he passed with flying colors.

USHR on new 2015 recruit Cole Maier - "Rangy forward is progressing nicely at Taft. The former New York Saints product has improved his skating a great deal and has always had a knack around the net. Showed excellent poise in the offensive zone over the weekend. Is someone we think will have a breakout season this upcoming year. A D-I prospect." (June 2013)

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

A few collateral observations from last night. First the video quality was the best I've seen with HD quality broadcast and multiple camera angles. Well worth the $7.95 fee. The replays were very good including the overhead goal shots which were available when the refs were reviewing Ghosts wraparound attempt in the first period. My only major criticism was that they were late in picking up coverage after the intermissions.

The announce team was decent and relatively unbiased though obviously they focused on the home team. They had some comical difficulties with some names including Ghost, Ciampini and of course Sak (whose) name I still can't remember. They had the good sense to just call him Alex.

The facility itself looks fantastic, though it seemed to me to be strangely quiet, even when Cloud was still in the game. It gave me greater appreciation for the noise effect at Messa, though little else about our building facilities compares favorably, but I'll save that topic for another day.

All in all the night was all that could be hoped for. Tonight should be tougher and though no excuses from our coach or the boys, I would guess that any travel or fatigue factor could be greater tonight. Regardless of the outcome this team impresses me as potentially a very special one.

Did we have an injured player late into the third? He went down near our bench and way lying on the ice? My Stretch feed was spotty and sound poor. Was that Hatch? Any injury reports? Was that a penalty or just a good forecheck? If you want to follow todays game but don't have a feed, this is a very good source:

Huge win for this program. I didn't get to see it, but it sounds like we dominated. Let's hope we can get the sweep tonight.

That was Hatch, but he came back in the game.
