Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

It sounds like a broken record, but I hope we don't overlook Dartmouth on our way to SCSU.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

Any idea what the turnout will be for like for Dartmouth Wednesday night? Have all the students gone home? Got to keep the focus on Dartmouth.

I am no longer a student, but yes, the students are all home. They are off from November 27th until January 5th.

Looks like plenty of tickets are still available. I'd guess 1,500-1,600 show up.

I just hope we don't look past Dartmouth. They have plenty of reason to come at us with guns blazing on Wednesday, considering the 7-2 drubbing we gave them on November 1. You have just beaten the top team in the ECAC, last years runner up, and you are going to face the current top team in the country and in between comes along a team that is back on track and mad as hell and itching to knock you off. This is a coaching nightmare. As far as I am concern Dartmouth is way more important than SCSU. I'd take the two points in the ECAC and screw the trip to Minnesota. With 5 games in 9 days we are going to be too exhausted to do anything anyway. Knocking of Dartmouth will give us a good shot at the Cleary Cup.

Stevens was named goalie of the week today: http://bit.ly/1gXf0pW

I thought if any Union player won a league award this week, it would have been one of the freshmen (like Eli).

Cole Ikkala remains day-to-day (upper-body). Didn't practice Tuesday, but Bennett said "that doesn't mean a thing."

Everyone else made it out of the weekend okay.

A real good piece out today by Ken Schotts (The Daily Gazette). He is right on and sounding the alarm. Screw the SCSU matchup. We cannot let this one get away.
College Hockey Slap Schotts: Dutchmen must avoid another potential trap game

"Now, the Dutchmen must avoid not only another potential trap game, but a letdown.
No. 10 Union faces Dartmouth on Wednesday before heading to top-ranked St. Cloud State for two games this weekend. More on the polls further down on the blog.
It would be easy for the Dutchmen to overlook the Big Green. In their first meeting Nov. 1 in Hanover, N.H., the Dutchmen dominated the game. They outshot the Big Green, 31-17, and scored four second-period goals to take a 7-2 victory.
Dartmouth started the season 0-8, and were awful in a lot of those games. The night after losing to Union, the Big Green gave up seven goals to RPI. Two games after that, they allowed eight goals against St. Lawrence.
Since then, the Big Green have played better. They won at Yale, 4-1, on Friday, for their second straight victory (they beat Harvard, 2-1, last Saturday). Dartmouth had a 2-0 first-period against Brown on Saturday, but lost, 3-2, in overtime.
Knowing coach Bob Gaudet as well as I do, he will have the Big Green ready for Wednesday’s game. The players know that they were embarrassed by the Dutchmen, and they will be motivated to avenge that."

If they are going to come after us, then we have to go after them twice as hard. We have got to take it to them for 60 minutes.

That has got to be from the Princeton Game when he got the shutout. Neither Goalie played well in the Q game.

Probably a combination of numbers -- shutout against Princeton, beating a highly ranked team, 1.5 gaa and a .930% save plus he was 2-0. Several other goaltenders had strong numbers but I agree with you, when you put a shutout on your side of the ledger that is probably a deal breaker.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

I'm cautiously optimistic about tomorrow night's game. It certainly sets up as the classic trap/letdown game after playing a barn-burner against a ranked opponent and with the short turnaround. But.. Dartmouth has the same turnaround time and will have to travel to Union on top of it. Is also good that this wasn't the 2nd game of a weekend series and the coaches have time to get the team primed and mentally prepared for the Big Green. Concern that there will not be as much fan energy in Messa given the students on break and mid-week, so everyone who goes has to MAKE A LOT OF NOISE!!!

Much more concerned with the weekend in southern Minnesota. The short turnaround and long trip is not a good combo to play the #1 team in the country in their barn on a big ice surface. I really don't understand why they at least didn't go for a Sat/Sun set of games. SCSU is typically a very good skating team and will be much more familiar with the bigger ice surface. U's mobile d-men and smaller faster forwards may be able to take advantage of the bigger ice, but I have to believe the boys will not have much left in the tank as Saturday's game progresses. Goalies often have the biggest adjustment to the bigger ice, as the shooting angles are different from the smaller rinks. Given Stevens "angle issues" in the last game, this is a concern. I think it will be interesting to see if Bennett does some wholesale switching of players in & out of the lineup for the next 3 games in order to have some fresher legs. Also would not be surprised to see Sakelleropoulis in at least one game.. though may depend on how Stevens does.

If the right Dartmouth team shows up tonight, the game could be interesting. But either way, I still expect Union to pull out a win. Having a chance to take full control of first place going into the break is a "big motivation," as Gostisbehere put it.

With tonight being their third game in six days (with a long distance road trip ahead), I guess it's not completely unrealistic that Alex S. might get the nod tonight against a low-scoring Dartmouth team. If they're going to rest Stevens at all during this stretch, I highly doubt it would be at SCSU. But time will tell.

The problem is that Dartmouth is not low scoring anymore ... in their last 6 they have averages 3.0 per game
