Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

We did not control the puck tonight, lackluster defense, Bodie played noticeably bad tonight, and Shayne needs to keep his head. We were simply out played by Colgate. Judging by Coach's comments on Sullivan, it sounds like he didn't receive enough treatment from the athletic trainers, not taking care of his injury, and/or partying a little too much. We play like this tomorrow and Cornell will destroy us.

I think coach's comments were honest and laced with "we're better than this." Bottom line is we got out Unioned. Colgate had fast feet, strong work ethic and took it to us. Individually we've got good talent...but not enough talent to win on talent alone. Coach will straighten this out...remember it's early November!

When you're up 2-0, you have to put the petal to the metal and finish the other team off. You can't give solid teams like Colgate windows to get back into the game. Give Colgate a lot of credit; some teams may have folded like a chair falling down 2-0 early on the road. I'm not sure how many adjustments can be made before tomorrow night, but a few lineup changes wouldn't surprise me.

Woof.. that was not pretty, a growing pains game that reminded a bit of the 1st Lake State game. I won't say that I wasn't surprised by last night, but I knew there would be nights like it this season.

Agree with UF4's comments. When you don't play team defense and stick to your system offensively, you won't have the puck against a good team. Too much individual play, can't blame the goaltending on this one. The players didn't adjust to what Gate was doing and ended up chasing them all night. There are too many new players who don't have the Union system ingrained in them yet, but doesn't mean they are not trying and won't eventually get there.. but obviously the bigger concern is the more experienced players that seem to lose focus of that stuff too. Seems like the high offensive skill level on this teams gets them overconfident at times and take too many chances. If that happens again tonight it will be bad news..

Welcome back!

That was a pretty poor showing last night and certainly a major disappointment after last weekend. Still as ADK points out, this team is going to take awhile to find its way. They need a quick wake up call or tonight may be just as brutal. The Ghost penalty sequence and the SHG at the end of the first turned things around negatively. Credit to Colgate which with the exception of the first 10 minutes or so played a nearly flawless game. I thought that Finn the frosh goalie was on the edge of a meltdown early, but he bounced back nicely.

RB went ballistic at the press conference. I understand calling out Ghost for his inexcusable penalty but was totally surprised about the Kevin Sullivan matter. Still we don't know what goes on behind closed doors and I defer to our coach in all such matters. I think everyone in that locker room knows what is expected of them and are held accountable accordingly.

I'll say I got more than I bargained for when I asked about Sullivan. I don't think anybody in the room expected that answer, perhaps evidenced by a brief period of silence afterwards.

I've never seen Bennett quite that upset; the only other time that would rival in my time doing this would be after losing to Cornell at home in January.

I just noticed that Kelly Zajac scored for A Devils last night. He's been battling injuries the past season or so.

And Kyle Bodie potted his first pro goal last night for the ECHL's Cincinnati Cyclones.

Great win! That is Union hockey at its finest! Defense first, out-shot our opponent 3:1 ratio.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

With Cornell consistently being a top team over the past 15 years or so, I've always considered the games with the Big Red to be litmus tests of where U stands in the league and nationally. Over most of that time, obviously, it was a train wreck and the term "boys against men" was unfortunately appropriate to describe how U stacked up. Tonight Union played like men and to me that was the most satisfying, almost regardless of the score.. though of course that was very nice too :). Its easy for us fans to critique how the team "let off the gas" on Friday and didn't bury Gate, but it misses the point that Union's recent run of success is built on getting ahead and then clamping down defensively, not going for broke to score another goal or two. Shot blocking, back checking, defensive spacing, and physical play were way better tonight and it made the difference.

Hopefully a lesson was learned and the team can build on this. There are still plenty of things to improve, especially with the young players (and faceoffs OMG!), but the upperclassmen on the team really led by example tonight. Maybe my favorite play of the night was Ghost busting his butt to get back and breakup a 2 on 1.. not a highlight reel play but a huge one at the time. Also great to see "the BIG guy" back out there.. he certainly is an intriguing player & made a terrific pass on Ghost's goal. Also had nice chemistry with Carr and Wilkins, who I thought were great tonight too. Doesn't get any easier with maybe the two toughest games of the year so far coming up next weekend against Appert & Co. Would be good to have Sullivan back.

..and just have to say that Schott & company did everything but pull out an ink blot and ask Rick Bennett about his relationship with his mother in the post-game, seemed a little overboard to me ;).

Considering the game RPI had with Colgate last night, next weekend should be very interesting. Hopefully Union will continue last night's momentum.

It looks like the Dutchmen have a really strong club when the stars are in alignment. Early season injuries have not helped. At full strength, hopefully the inconsistencies will become a distant memory.
The RPI weekend will be telling.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

Not to diminish the win over Cornell but I was actually more impressed with Colgate than Cornell this weekend. Cornell seems to be mired in the big player, cycle down low, lack of creativity rut. The new breed ECAC may have left them behind at this point.

Eli impressed me greatly in his first game back. For such a big guy he moves very fluidly has good vision and hands. He doesn't really throw his weight around that much but makes his presence felt around the goal with his tremendous reach.

I was at the TU Center this afternoon to see ADevils play Bridgeport. Keith Kinkaid and Kelly Zajac both played. KK looked solid and Zaj looked to be moving very well. He has battled injuries since leaving Union. He is definitely on the smallish side at this level but hopefully his all around game and smarts will allow him to progress.

This weekend should be another epic affair. It will be a change of pace to see U as the underdog after winning 8 in a row vs RPI, but that might actually be a plus for U going into the games.

Will these games be a sellout? I was at last years game in Schenectady and it looked like it was almost a sellout. Any estimates on the projected attendance?

Sellout at Messa is likely I would think, not quite so much at RPI. In either case I'd get tix sooner rather than later.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

Update: Kevin Sullivan, who missed both games this past weekend, is "day-to-day" with an "upper-body" injury.
