Of general interest, any thoughts or observations on the elimination of goal judges this season?

It's strange not seeing them there anymore, but apparently having them is not only "recommended" by the NCAA as opposed to being "required."

It's one of those traditional things that have gone by the wayside over the years.

Alex allows a goal every 6 shots. Can we bring in Joe Young next year?

In defense of Alex:

Union has become very used to goalies saving games.
Troy was phenomenal, but he spent his freshman year backing up Keith Kincaid.
The expectation of a freshman coming in and playing at the level of an experienced upperclassman is not well founded.
Having followed Union hockey from the beginning of D-I, rookie goalies make errors. The good ones learn from them - isn't that the rationale for being in college?

Give the guy a break.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

Of the top 39 Goalies so far this season (Goal Tending Leaders) in DI, according to USCHO, 6 are Freshmen. The list stops with a worse GAA of 2.55. Looking at another metric, of the top 30 Goalies so far this year with the highest save percentage, there are 5 Freshman. This list stops at a low of .920. Alex is in neither list. Where he is listed, and #1 among all freshman (by allot) and 9th overall, is in minutes played at 277:24. Among all the DI freshman this year Alex is getting the most playing time. We are all hoping this early and intense game experience will help turn him into the top goalie in the ECAC.

Noticed that freshman Mike Vecchione was on the first line last night and has 2 goals and 1 assist so far.

Stats are interesting. However, early season numbers can be highly suspect just like the polls. The situations that young players are put into vary greatly; therefore, I would not put much stock in them.

It looks like Stevens will be in net for Dartmouth so this Alex nightmare will be over.

Also, imagine the depth we are going to have when Novak, Roy, and Eli come back.. It's going to get a lot better soon.

I suggest that the author of this post rethink it. A "Fan4Life" doesn't denigrate a rookie thrown into a difficult situation. Perhaps the loss of key players from last year and the spate of injuries to key players this year might also be a factor. Since the author is a recent addition to this group, a little restraint should be considered.

For the season, Union has averaged 7 shots allowed per period. This stat suggests very tough defense, we are simply not allowing very many shots on goal. It's not out of the question we have a top team defense in the nation. So no, the loss of key players and/or injuries is not a factor for Alex's lackluster ability to stop the puck. I do not expect Alex to be Troy, but I do expect him to be better than a .845 save percentage.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

These kids are not pros, at least not yet, and I don't like to single them out for harsh criticism. That isn't to say that I don't try to be objective in my comments, but I try to be supportive at the same time. Being specific, I know Alex's performance is not up to what expectations might have been for all concerned but the circumstances were very difficult and a goalie's mistakes are the most glaring. He is adjusting to college hockey and college in general as both a student and athlete so for him to be put under the microscope at this stage is a bit unfair. If I recall it was 3 seasons ago when Troy Grosenick coughed up a 3 goal lead against UConn, and now he is playing professionally after a distinguished career at Union.

As far as Colin returning against Dartmouth, has that been confirmed? Good news if true, but even if it is he will probably be a bit rusty. I'm sticking to my preseason prognostication that this team will be fine by the New Year and in a position to make a playoff run. Of course the injury bug needs to be eliminated but what I've seen of this group I like a lot.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

One thing to ultimately remember are the circumstances around why Sak is here in the first place. He was a last minute recruit brought in to fill a void. The fact that he wasn't already committed elsewhere suggests that he's not a four star / start from day one type of player. That fact coupled with the up tick in competition makes for a tough transition. Even with all this I'm much higher on the team right now than I was at the same time last year. This will be a very good team and they have a very bright future!

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

Union will be fine. Young teams give up leads and learn by it. RB brought him in for a reason and it was based upon his play in the USHL, the top Jr league in the country. He is a quality goalie and will be fine. Unions goalie coach is a hidden gem within the program and with his coaching, I would defer to him.
They have not been outplayed yet and the staff will make adjustments. To the contrary they have carried the play and in a few games dominated.

Good luck playing them in February if they are healthy

Took a look at the boxscores from the last 2 games with UConn, and found amazing similarities in score, shots on goal, etc.

Absolutely not fair to throw Alex under the bus. He played well against BGSU and UConn, and probably deserved a better fate in the 2nd LSSU game. Yes, he has much work to do to become a consistently good college goalie, but as Hokydad notes, lets wait until he has a full season or 2 with Jason Tapp and some hard offseason work before rendering a verdict. Also need to remember that Stevens wasn't exactly a stud right off the bat either, and has yet to prove that he can be consistent as the #1 goalie.

As for the state of the team going into in league play, have to say I am apprehensive. The team just does not seem in synch and hasn't established an identity yet. None of this is surprising considering all the new faces in the lineup due to graduation and injuries, but will be important to get some early league W's considering how strong the league is.

Going into the league opening weekend I'm most concerned over the injury situation. Sometimes as a fan I wish there was more transparency on injuries but at the same time understand the need for the coaches to be reserved in their public statements. So far as this weekend I'd be happy to pick up a couple of points on the road. Anything beyond that would be a bonus in my book. I don't see any team sprinting out to an insurmountable lead like Quinny did last season. I think there are easily a half dozen teams that can contend for the top four slots, so why not U?
