2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

Agree that the major missing component in this is what Appert says when he's talking to Curadi, and then what Appert says to Carr. I'm sure this will be left up to interpretation, and we will likely never know as I doubt the league ever releases it, but obviously something happens there to set Bennett off like that. In the nine seasons Rick has been a part of the program I have rarely seen him lose his cool in any situation. Rick is usually extremely even tempered behind the bench. Even heated confrontations with officials have been few and far between. He's not a guy like Gaudet who seems to blow up over something minor every other weekend. Not using this to justify Rick's actions, but this incident was shockingly out of character for him.
Well said.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

he left out the part when appert gestured at the union player and saying get the F off the ice, which is in refs report. left out curadi swinging his stick at multiple players. ast rpi coach swearing at union coach and players

the fact both teams were told by refs to stay on benches, but big seth fdlt he was above others.

sounds like the russian mayor saying no gays in his village where olympjcs are being held while standing in front of the gay bar

You don't know anything the refs or coaches said or did, and do not have access to the reports. What a clown.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

Yes, you don't know the history between these teams or the athletic competition between these two schools which goes more than a hundred years. You are not aware that at the end of the last RPI-UNION game, Bodie was blindsided by Haggerty, the RPI main thug, which lead to a similar outcome, with 100+ penalty minutes. At no time in any video did I see SA take any action to direct his players off the ice. Bennett keep his players off the ice. You don't know that in College Hockey, Union is, less the RPI games, at the bottom of the the PIM. Bodie is the best Captain this team has had that I can remember. One reason what we know that the RPI players were NOT coming out of the box to congratulate their goalie, is that they were carring their sticks. Please don't give me any Bull **** about how teams always head for the ice to do a group hug carrying their clubs. One of them, #5, used his stick to hit Union Players. That should result in expulsion from College. The good news, I hope, is that the league and the refs are closer to this and will make the right call. They have the history of the schools and the coaches (Alpert has been suspended before). The President of Union was at the game and Jackson is pretty savy. Both schools have a strong engineering bent so I don't think we will see political correctness run amuck. At least we don't throw garbage and broken bottles on the ice when a call does not go our way, like some schools I know.

And I stated that I don't know the history. Now I've seen the Ghost hit (albeit grainy and from far away) and I understand you have every right to be upset for that, that was flagrant. Yet, what does that have to do with Bodie's crosscheck? If he wanted to exact revenge, why didn't he in the 60 minutes of hockey? Why did he wait until the horn had blown, THEN decide he needed to get justice (and then afterwards wanted no part of anyone).

Appert waves his hands in gestures to get off the ice. You and other Union fans keep assuming he said something to RPI players to goon it up or Union players to shove it in their face, but have no proof that either of those happened. Not saying it couldn't have, but from our angle and our knowledge all we know is that we see him making gestures which seem pretty obvious to be "get off the ice."

As others have said, the "players celebrate without their sticks" is laughable. Please show me ANY footage other than a big celebration of some sort of championship where they come out without their sticks. They ALWAYS come out with their sticks, especially after home wins, so they can tap the ice in recognition of their fans.

Now I know Union fans have brought up how RPI flooded the ice with all their players, and this is true, however the reason that they shouldn't have is so that Union players don't get ganged up on, right? Well there's a chance that on some video I haven't seen I missed something, but for the most part, RPI despite having so many more players, kept it to one on one matchups. In fact there was only one instance I could find where RPI doubleteamed a player... RPI's # 20 shoved Union's # 17 when he was already tangled up with # 27. (and for fairness in conversation, Union's #21 then tried to attack RPI's # 27 from behind while he was getting going again with Union's #17; those were the only two instances I saw of a 2 on 1 from either side) Other than that, most of the time RPI's players were just surrounding everyone, but they kept it to one-on-one matchups, which is very commendable.

Were the RPI guys who jumped onto the ice looking for a fight? Yes. But it was because a fight had already been picked and in that split second of jumping the boards their intentions went from celebrating to fighting because of what Bodie started. As you and your Union fans have said ad naseum, they're the little guys, they're terrible at hockey, they're insignificant. So then why would you jump onto the ice looking for a fight when they'd just slayed the mighty dragon they had a double digit losing record against? They just wanted to celebrate, and you could see that at the end when the fighting stopped and they got to share a moment with their crowd.

Lastly, as far as your reference to the WMU @ SCSU incident, so because I support SCSU that has something to do with my credibility? I was at that game and I think what the fans at the NHEC did was DEPLORABLE. Myself and the other four guys I went there with actually yelled at everyone throwing things on the rink. That was disgusting and an eyesore on my program. I would hope you wouldn't associate me with those actions just bc my screenname starts with "SCSU" just as I will not associate you or any other fans with the actions of Bodie or Bennett.

And in case you haven't noticed, nobody who isn't a Union supporter has said RPI was to blame. Nobody who isn't a Union supporter has said that the blame was 50/50. Not one. Just sayin'

I really debated whether or not to post in here, 'cause I don't want to pick fights with Union fans. Hell, I want you guys to have a good year the rest of the way out and help our SOS. But I feel like the debate largely has been Union fans and RPI fans weighing in, and the times that someone outside of those fanbases gave their opinion it was received well and with thanks, so I just threw in what I felt was an opinion from a fan without a side. In fact when I first watched the fight I knew nothing about it, I didn't know who had won the game, and it took me a couple seconds to remember who would be who based on color scheme. And the first thing I thought was, "Well... that was clearly started by the guys in dark sweaters." I had no idea what Bennett looked like from before this, so initially I was like "That must be RPI's coach" bc why would the coach of the team that started this be throwing haymakers (or attempting to)? Usually hockey fights are started by the team that lost/is losing. That's how this one looks to non-ECAC eyes too.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

BTW, it looks like it took Hockeygeddon to get this thread over 1,000 posts, a number rarely if ever reached on a Union thread.
W1, this ones for you. It should get you to 1,1000 :p. My open letter to President of Union.

Dear President Ainlay,

I am sure you are aware of the altercation that occurred at the Times Union Center during the Union/RPI hockey game this past Saturday, January 25, 2014. For your review, I have attached a clip of Mr. Rick Bennett striking RPI hockey player Milos Buebla (#17).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co4S_Hxx7v0

For full disclosure, I am a longtime supporter of RPI hockey and am writing to you with my concerns about Mr. Bennett striking a player from RPI.

The following several questions are natural responses to that incident on Saturday, and I would appreciate your response.

Did you approve of (relatively minor) two-game suspension, and if you did, were you aware that Mr. Bennett struck an opposing player?

Did you leave the severity of the penalty to the discretion of the Athletic Director?

What is the policy of Union College concerning staff members and the physical abuse of a student or a visiting student?

Lastly -- I pose this question as a parent. What would you say to Milos Buebla’s parents about Mr. Bennett’s conduct toward him?

A two-game suspension is not enough of a penalty to send a message to the local community that striking a student athlete is acceptable. I am not asking for Mr. Bennett's termination but a recognition by your administration of the severity of his conduct and a more appropriate response.

Respectfully,
AspyDad

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

And yet all of the other ad hominem attacks in the last five pages get a pass???
What am I supposed to do, admonish every person in this thread? AND monitor this thread every 5 minutes?

The fact that most of the Union fans are trying to spread the blame equally in this is shocking. Bodie set the whole thing off with a cheap shot and their COACH threw punches and hit an opposing player with one of them. Good luck recruiting kids to come play at Union with a coach that displays that kind of behavior.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

Wow, missed game due to heading down to New York before the game at Yankee Stadium, so I can only comment on what I have read here and the You Tube postings. This will and should pass as days go by. No one hurt and tempers took over at the end of a hockey game. Shocking! Alot of posting on both threads are ridiculous and obviously you need to read between the lines of these posts depending on routing interest. Alot of things going on at the same time and you can spin it whatever way you want. And that goes for games and hits in the past that people want to keep bringing up. Its a physical, intense game. I agree Bennett lost it a little bit more than he should have and coaches can't react like that. I would worry more in the upcoming days on the anti-sports admin at Union taking more action than the ECAC. In a sad way, this game will bring alot of publicity that will help promote this rivalry beyond the hardcore college hockey fans in the capital district.

In a position where I know staff, players and families members on both teams, current and past, believe me when I say, if you take off the jerseys, coaches jackets, etc., both teams are filled with tremondous young men and coaches who all work a tireless amount of hours to do their best as student atheletes and their mentors. Please let this incident rest, and move on.

One constant. Flagdude remains bat**** crazy and Hokydope is a tremendous liar who's knowledge is limited to Peewee hockey in Cranston. If we were all to ignore both of them as hard as that is), the board would be a much better place. Hokywimp.... refs report!!! hahaha. Come to a game at Union like I have asked you before and I will firmly plant that refs report down your throat! Sorry for the rant but so sick of this guys bs and lying.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

The suspension is sufficient and warrant nothing further. I don't believe your boy Mr. Appert will get any suspension.

Mr. Bennett's strike was intercepted by Milos Buebla, intended for Mr. Appert. Mr. Bennett did not intentionally strike their son....regardless, not justifiable. However, Milos knew that being in the middle of the scrum separating his coach, he was subject to the inherent risk of possibly being hit, as was the lineman Mr. Cooke.

My question to you, is why put this spin on it.......typical political mindset!!!!
I think Bennett's getting off a little light. Whether he intended to hit Buebla or not isn't relevant, the fact that he did is...

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

I can't argue with the suspensions. McLaughlin and co. did a good job suspending Bennett before the league could. Not surprised to see Ciampini get a suspension, you don't see who he engages with in the video, but his gloves and helmet are off by the time the whole incident is over.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

I think that's two :D;)

Our main weapon is fear and surprise! our two main weapons are fear, surprise and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope. Our three, three main weapons are fear, surprise, an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope and nice red outfits- oh blast, I'll come in again!

You are trolling. Union beat you guys on your ice fair and square. Get over it. The right amount of discipline has been handed out for both teams. Union was a dirty team about 15 years ago, but both Union and RPI are typically pretty classy teams now. I am not a supporter of either team and believe there was plenty of blame for both teams. How it started is not all that is relevant. What took place after it started is and for that I would put the blame about 50/50. I also commend the Union captain for coming out to inquire about the handshake.

Ah yes, the 8 paragraph trolling post that probably took 15-20 minutes to type.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

You're totally right...RPI played a great game and deserved the win. The win is good for the rivalry and also good for the ECAC. I want other ECAC teams to dread the Capital District trip because they stand a good chance of going 0-4 in points and then having to crawl home limping...

Completely agree !! Either team could have been said to deserve the win....it was that good and tight of a game. Thank you for the post of sensibility.
