2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

I may hate Union and their hockey program almost as much as I hate Cornell's, but we do have a lot of decent fans at the other end of route 7 (most of the time). Please don't take this likely source as representation of our whole fanbase.
Ahh yes, I see that one your "brethren" is being voted off the island, so nice to know there is some self policing going on. You guys really shouldn't take these games so seriously, after all, Union isn't really a rival of RPI's anyways.. oops, I'll probably get another neg rep for that one :D.

You are in football.

OK, time to get serious. We have 2 games at PSU, 2 at St. Cloud, 2 at UNH, and RPI at TUC as the only remaining OOC games. I think we need both at PSU, at least split the two at UNH and St. Cloud and preferably the RPI game. None of that will be easy but is certainly attainable. I have no empirical evidence at this point, but I would say that's probably a minimum to make the NCAAs without winning the ECAC tourney. It's still early but every game counts at this point.

Cornell hockey fans are not ones to easily acknowledge rivals and this is true for their forums and blogs. One such blog is "Where Angels Fear to Tread" http://cornellhockeywaft.weebly.com/index.html The following was written just before the RPI games. "Rick Bennett led his team to playoff glory for the second season in a row and had the pleasure of eliminating the defending national champion, Boston College, in a 5-1 rout. The win ranks easily as one of the best from ECAC Hockey in the last five seasons and is a strong contender for the most important."

Nice sentiment. Glad we joined with Yale and Quinnipiac in helping to put the ECAC on the map. Two years ago when Union played Lowell in round 2, the deafening cry EASY-AC could be heard from the Lowell throngs. When the game was over and Union had won, the Union fans responded "ECAC". This year the ECAC thus far has the best non-conference record in college hockey.

This years BC fans say so what, just because the ECAC had "one good year" does not mean squat ... we will see.

Glad to see the Flyers aren't being too pushy. If any Flyers Reps are reading this, let the kid earn his degree before you sign him! :D
As much as I'd like to think the Flyers would take that into consideration, in the NHL world that's not likely.

There are actually plenty of games for U to help their PWR. In addition to the 5 you mention, there are 4 with Qpac & Yale, the rematchs with Cornell/Gate, and would not be surprised if at least one of SLU & Clarkson end up with good records at the end of the day. The ECAC is strong this year and if the boys win their share and finish near the top of the league, chances should be good for an NCAA bid. U is #13 in RPI right now and has a strength-of-schedule of 19, which is a lot higher than in past seasons. Having Yale & Qpac in the top 10 and Clarkson/RPI not far off goes a long way in helping the SOS arithmetic. A lot of "ifs" in all of this, we have to actually beat these good teams, but is nice to be in control of the situation for now.

I was looking only at OOC games but agree with your evaluation. I understand that their is a "shadow" pairwise out there that right now has U on the outside looking in. All subject to change of course.

Nice to see KK and Zaj on the scoresheet last night. KK has been on a roll of late and really seems to be hitting his stride.

Please Please Please Dear Hockey Gods up there in Hockey heaven, hear my prayer ..... please don't let us look past Penn State. They are ahead of us in shots/game and they played UML even in their last game. We will have plenty of motivation to get up for our remaining ECAC games. We need these two wins and they will not come easy. They will be at their best as this will be their tune-up for the start of their league play. Time for the work ethic to kick in. Blood and Guts. Union Hockey !!!

The RPI fans who say it's not a rivalry actually have a point. How can a be a rivalry when it's been completely one-sided over the past decade?

I'd be (unpleasantly) surprised if we overlook them after last year when we looked pretty bad even though taking two games.

This is EXACTLY what RPI fans have been saying when RPI was on the winning end of things. Now that U has been winning, it has flipped. Amazing how a little success can turn Union fans into BC fans.

That really hurts .... there is nothing uglier than a BC fan.

You obviously don't understand the implied humor in UHM's post. No Union posters on this board were predicting a Union sweep prior to the games, and actually most gave RPI a lot of credit before and even after the games (HoDad being an outlier for reasons obvious to all RPIers). More importantly, Union's players and coaches consider RPI their top rival and I think every Union poster on this board gains a unique satisfaction when Union beats the Engineers, which to me = RIVAL.
