Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

Union ranked 15th in this week's USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll. 1st appearance in the poll since being ranked 15th on 10/14.

Does the commitment of Nick DeSimone imply Shayne is gone next year? One can only speculate..

Makes you wonder, doesn't it? Bodie is the only defenseman set to graduate, but now Union has two coming in next year (Light, DeSimone).

DeSimone seems like another really good get for the program. With others like Ammirato, Light, Scarfo and Hynes next year's class is already looking very good.

As I said earlier, I would love to see Shayne back for his senior year (as a fan.) Nothing beats the college life or the "brotherhood" of a college athletic team. College athletes only have four years to enjoy the best years of their life. Money talks however, and that 6 or 7 figure contract staring him in the face will be a difference maker. Time will tell, but it would be great to see Shayne wearing that C next year.

Ghost for Hobey!!!!! Get on the bandwagon!!!!

Seriously though, with all due respect to Welsh, Grosenick, & Kinkaid, he is the most talented player I've ever seen at Union and has to be one of the most talented in the NCAA. He had an excellent weekend, and when he doesn't overhandle the puck he's the best player on the ice. I have no doubt that this will be his last season as a Dutchman and that is why the coaches are bringing in 2 d-men next fall. Hopefully Ghost can go out on a high note.

Somebody else mentioned wanting to see how U stacks up with the top teams in ECAC and I have to say that, while I'm not looking past anybody else, I am very interested to see how U matches up with the Bobcats of Qpac. Last year, they were the only team in the league that made Union look slow. I think that U is quicker this year, but that game 3 weeks from now will be a definite litmus test. It seems to me that teams that can match U's speed give us trouble, which is what happened with Colgate and Harvard (at least for part of the game) and even Lake State in spurts. Qpac, Yale, and the 2 with UNH will be big tests of that theory.

As for the extra-curriculars on Saturday, I place a lot of the blame on the reffing. There were several calls on both teams that to my eyes were either not penalties or were so borderline that they shouldn't have been called. The calls also came in bunches against each team, which was weird considering that it really didn't seem like the game was getting out of hand until the last 5 minutes. You could see both teams getting more frustrated as the game went on and when U took the big lead at the end it boiled over. Personally, I think U's recent big game experience helped them keep their composure up to that point, but was very ugly for both teams at the end.

..and BTW, I got the same "scumbag" neg rep as I assume every U fan got.. LOL, I take it as a compliment!

I was wondering about that. I don't even post that much to get noticed!

Not surprising considering the likely source. Infantile.

Regrettably, I also think the Ghost will just be an apparition in Schenectady next season. The coaching staff should be credited for keeping him on board for three seasons as I'm sure that Philly was putting on the pressure to snag him early. At least we had him for 3 seasons unlike Andrew Johnston who Philly poached before he even showed on campus. BTW, he is having an underwhelming season in the ECHL. I wonder if he is regretting his decision at this point. College players are just meat for the NHL market. A player really needs to be taken care of financially to give up his degree and grab the money. I also think Josh Jooris may have made a mistake but that's obviously my somewhat biased opinion. I'm sure he was promised a big time shot at the NHL roster, which has to be intoxicating to a young man. Still I won't give up at least some glimmer of hope until Ghost is officially departed. In the meantime I am trying to visualize Philadelphia in April and I don't mean the Flyers. ;)

I may hate Union and their hockey program almost as much as I hate Cornell's, but we do have a lot of decent fans at the other end of route 7 (most of the time). Please don't take this likely source as representation of our whole fanbase.
