I'm a longtime RPI fan who would love to see some more banners hanging in the HFH. If they can't hang in Troy, I'd rather see them in Schenectady than anywhere else. Good luck. Go U.

The question has been which of the ECAC teams is the darkhorse team that is going to come on strong down the regular season stretch and make a run for it? Dartmouth. They are playing like a final 4 team. From the comments of our seniors, they know what they are up against.

The peril of being the #1 is you are always going to draw that team. The good news is the 1R darkhorse almost never advances again:

90 #1 Colgate defeats #10 Yale, 10-3, 5-4
91 #1 Clarkson defeats #9 Yale, 4-0, 6-3
92 #10 RPI upsets #1 Harvard, 4-3 (ot) <-- this caused the ECAC to immediately end the 1-year experiment of a 1-game QF
93 #1 Harvard defeats #10 Princeton, 6-2, 8-0
94 No darkhorse
95 #1 Clarkson defeats #9 Cornell, 6-2, 7-2
96 No darkhorse
97 #1 Clarkson defeats #10 Yale, 5-4, 2-1
98-02 PIG system
03 #1 Cornell defeats #11 RPI, 3-2, 4-0
04 #1 Colgate defeats #10 St. Lawrence, 1-2, 1-0, 2-1
05 #1 Cornell defeats #9 Clarkson, 5-0, 3-2 (ot)
06 #1 Dartmouth defeats #11 Yale, 5-1, 3-1
07 No darkhorse
08 #8 Colgate upsets #1 Clarkson, 0-1, 4-3, 3-2 (2ot)
09 #1 Yale defeats #12 Brown, 4-2, 2-0
10 #11 Brown upsets #1 Yale, 3-2, 3-6, 1-0
11 #12 Colgate upsets #1 Union, 1-4, 4-2, 4-3 (ot)

12 #1 Union defeats #10 RPI, 3-2, 4-2
13 #1 Quinnipiac defeats #9 Cornell, 2-3, 10-0, 3-2 (2ot)

Of the 16 times when the #1 faced an upset 1R winner, the #1 advanced 75% (12/16) of the time. Taking out the 1-game outlier, those results improve to 12/15 = 80%.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

Time flies when you're having fun, and this senior class has provided plenty of memorable moments in their four years at Union. The class of 2014 stepped right in as freshman from their first game against Sacred Heart, and their contributions to the program will never be forgotten.

I remember that it like it was yesterday. I had graduated from Union the previous June and I was one month into a new job in NYC. I timidly told my boss that I had to leave work early that day for an "alumni event" up at Union. I didn't want to miss the first series of the season. Who knew that the Freshman I watched that day would go on to make the national tournament every single year of their college career (when Union had never made a National Tournament...or won the Cleary Cup...or won a Whitelaw Cup in school history). Hopefully I'll be able to watch the last game of their career on April 12th in Philadelphia.

11 #12 Colgate upsets #1 Union, 1-4, 4-2, 4-3 (ot)

I'm thinking the boys have been reminded of this a few times and this year's seniors will remember how this happened. If nothing else, this should be a motivator for this weekend...in addition to the goal they have wanted to achieve all year long.

The long time fans here will always be a bit paranoid having gone through endless seasons of abject failure. On the other hand this team has known only success, let's just hope it continues.

Novak back, but Eli Lichtenwald is surprisingly out. May find out more later.

Oh my goodness... that was way too stressful... Thank god for Carr... The fans were pretty cool too, it's the loudest I've heard Messa in a while !!
GO UUUUUUUUUUUUUU !!!!!

Gutty win against a tough Dartmouth team. It got hairy at times, but the defense and Colin Stevens bailed them out and yes...Daniel Carr.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

Bennett said Lichtenwald was out with a middle-body injury. He danced around giving a timetable for his return.

Here's what else Bennett had to say: http://youtu.be/oRhz93A8uYk

Union players (Novak, Carr, Stevens) postgamer: http://youtu.be/PZmstAZ23rk

Dartmouth coach Bob Gaudet postgamer: http://youtu.be/tv8fPhSgyGg

Stevens' shutout was his 6th of the season, a new single season program high. Grosenick (11-12) and Mayotte (05-06) had five.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

I have a question. Colin currently has 120 scoreless minutes. I remember that Trevor Koenig's record of 144+ minutes was broken at some point. Does anyone know what the current record for scoreless minutes is?

As far as I can tell, it's Koenig at 198:44

Stevens' current streak is at 129:07. Combined with Sak, Union goalies have a 189:07 shutout streak.

Thanks for the info. It's stuff like that that drives me nuts. Guess my memory doesn't go back quite that far!

Carr and Stevens!!! Wow. How we stepped up when Ghost and Vech went to the box was amazing, along with that unbelievable glove save.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

I hate these Darmouth Games. I have already bitten off all my fingernails. We have got to count on Dartmouth coming out even stronger tomorrow. Can Steven's come up with another miraculous performance? Tomorrow is a big one. Dartmouth is going to come out trying to score big time.

Good news for the ECAC

St. Cloud loosing
Wisconsin Lost
UVM Lost
Maine lost
BC Lost
Michigan Lost
Northeastern lost

..BTW, St. Cloud tied their game with 1 second left and now in OT. A great game. Can watch it here http://www.nchchockey.com/game/show/7127652 The Huskies are fun to watch when your team is not playing them.

Edit: and with that Miami steamrolls one into the net. Tough luck Huskies
