Here's a video of Stevens' save on Neiley in the 3rd period:

Thanks for the videos, glad you got Pontarelli's goal too. I didn't see how great of a play that both he and Ghost made on it live, but the goal is a thing of beauty on video. The fake Ghost puts on the Dartmouth forward wasn't even fair. Money Mike also showed great poise gloving the rebound down, and then poking it home. Real heady play by Ghost to make the read on the play as Dartmouth was forcing the issue at the points on the PK trying to create turnovers at the blue line and send them the other way for shorthanded breaks.

I still can't believe the tripping call on the shorthanded breakaway in the first where the Dartmouth player tripped over the blue line. Out of all the bad calls I've seen in the ECAC over the years, that one might have been the worst as the Dartmouth kid was at least ten feet ahead of Taylor when he fell all on his own.

You're right - Pontarelli's goal is more impressive once you see it on video. I was at the other end of the rink when I saw it live, so I didn't have the best view at the time.

Here's the goal, if anyone else wants to see it: http://youtu.be/YQ7yOBXHk2E

The tripping call on Taylor baffled everyone else as well, for the reasons you mentioned. Fortunately, it had no impact on the game.

Nice Reporting by the Greg Fennell at Valley News, White River Junction, N.H.

Nice Picture of the Captain from the Dailey Gazette

"Ice Chips: Stevens’ clean sheet was his sixth of the year. Union is riding a shutout streak of 189 minutes, 7 seconds… Carr’s penalty-shot conversion was the Dutchmen’s first since a Glenn Sanders goal against Harvard on Jan. 4, 2003. Union had missed its last six penalty shots prior to Carr’s goal. … Game one drew a sellout crowd of 2,054. Tonight’s contest should sell out as well; only a handful of game two seats remained prior to the start of game one."

Union-Dartmouth Game 1 postgame report (with 4 videos)
http://www.dailygazette.com/weblogs...dartmouth-game-1-postgame-report-with-4-vide/

"We have to bring it tomorrow. We need to sharpen up. We need to be more detailed to give ourselves a chance to win."
“I don’t want to even talk about the win. I want to talk about us just being better. I just feel we need to be better."
“We’re coming in with all these accolades and everything else. We’ve got to put that away. We’ve got to stop reading the press and all that jazz. We have to worry about Union hockey.”
"Yes, Bennett didn’t seem pleased. But it’s that time of year ..... Take a shift off, and it can cost you."

"Bennett is keeping his team focused on the next goal, winning a third straight Whitelaw Cup. He wants them hungry. Judging by his words, he will have the players ready ...."

One period at at time, stay focussed, seniors last stand before the home town.

As far as I can tell, it's Koenig at 198:44

Stevens' current streak is at 129:07. Combined with Sak, Union goalies have a 189:07 shutout streak.

I could be wrong, but didn't Joel Laing from RPI beat Trevor's streak? I remember he was coming very close.

Spouse seems to remember that we beat him out on a short-handed goal just as he was closing in on a new record.:D

I watched the Gaudet and Bennett post game press conferences. If you didn't know who won, you'd think the opposite result actually occurred. Gaudet was laudatory of his team and Bennett seemed somewhat dissatisfied with his team's effort. Good psychologists I guess.

It's well established that Dartmouth won't quit but playing their fifth game in 9 nights with two trips in between, I've got to believe that the tank may be near empty and Union can deliver a knockout punch if they get up early on them. That of course is a big "if".

McNally or "McNasty" is a thuggish player and takes a lot of cheap shots. It's too bad because he really is a talented player.

Agreed, lots of talent and a fun player to watch when he isn't too busy being a goon. His hit on Novak at the end of the first period was DQ worthy, can't believe he only got a two minute penalty for it.

Dartmouth's top line was all over the place last night, lots of speed and creativity between McNally and Neilly.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

U was very sloppy defensively as the game went on so I understand why Bennett is not happy. The video on THE SAVE shows all 3 Union skaters within 5 feet of the puck in the corner, giving Neilly all day to take a shot in front. The boys will have to be sharper at both ends (missed plenty of grade A's themselves) to put the Green away.

Stevens is really playing with a ton of confidence. The video shows how quickly he came out and took away the whole net from Neilly - he really had very little to shoot at. Colin's anticipation is fantastic too as he made several saves on plays that went across the slot quickly. Grant on the other hand was very good too, though he should have come out farther on Carr's PS and not backed in so quickly, though still a fantastic job by Daniel and an amazingly quick snipe.

Anybody noticing how Coatta has improved this year, at center now , skating much better and exhibiting a lot of confidence out there, so good to see. Coaching and commitment personified.

Another gritty win...on to Lake Placid!!

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

Well I was so wrong about Dartmouth possibly running out of gas. They were a handful again. Happy but mainly relieved with the outcome. Bittersweet moment though as our super seniors leave Messa ice for the last time. More work to do. On to LP !
