2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

The way Quinnipiac is playing, if Yale gets in you may see QU get bumped out west instead of Union.

Not if Union is a #1 seed. They would most certainly head West should both Yale and Union get in at a 4 seed and a 1 seed. They won't have that matchup in Bridgeport thus keeping Quinnipiac in the East.

incoming 2014 recruit, forward Tyler Hynes has been traded from 1st place Omaha to last place Fargo in the Western Division of the USHL, in 9 games Tyler has 5 goals and 2 assists. Omaha is loaded with offensive talent so maybe his role is a little

different. Tyler is from the capital district town of Slingerlands and previously played his hockey at Albany Academy with current freshman defensive standout Jeff Taylor.

I don't think they'd screw Union if they were #2 or #3 in PWR; they'd be more likely to swap Yale down to the 3-seed.

The other probable 1's (BC, Minny, Ferris) all fit their regionals, so they wouldn't want to disturb that.

Union looks safe. Q looks pretty good for Bridgeport too; they're perfect as a 2 or 3. If they drop to a 4 they'd probably have to travel (unless the NCAA wanted the Q home $$$ so much they swapped them to the 3).

Can they do that? The only reason I've been rooting against Yale to make the tournament is because I don't want to be forced out West when Yale automatically gets to go to Bridgeport despite being a 4 seed.

They make every effort to preserve the bands, but IIRC the only band that is guaranteed is the 1-seeds.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

I always knew I should have put "PWR at time of selection" into the seeding history. Help me find the data and I'll answer your question!

I don't think they move someone to another band anymore. So, if Yale is a 4, they don't get moved. And so does Union (assuming they stay a #1 seed). It's possible they move BC to Bridgeport and move Union to Worcester in order to keep 2 East teams in the East, and 2 West teams in the West. BC would get placed 1st, but I guess they could look at attendance and place them in Bridgeport.

I thought there were only two rules the NCAA has ever formally committed to:

1. If the host makes the tourney they must play in their regional.
2. 1-seeds are placed by starting at the #1 PWR, putting them in the closest site, then doing the same for 2 with the remaining sites, etc.

All other "rules," though they have been reverse-engineered so closely Jason Moy has picked the field exactly something like 7 times in a row, are still unofficial, even the one about not having intra-conference first round match-ups (which has never been violated and which I expect never will be).

At some point the selection committee made a statement that banding the 5-8 and 9-12 was at their discretion, combined with some mumbling about the band "edges" being basically within the noise anyway. Granted that was a while ago (my memory says 5 years which probably means 10), and they may have had formal statements to the contrary since then.

tl;dr: Whatever Ralph says I'm going with.

That is what I thought also. You can switch #13 with #16, but you can't switch #13 with #12.

Works for me.

Of course the unstated lesson in all this is just beat Yale and the problem goes away.

This is what I've understood, also. If a host school makes it, they're placed in their regional...end of discussion.

Jayson's Bracketology blog goes through the process very well. If you're a newbie to it all, I'd suggest reading it each week. Outside of the host school rule, he's never said anything else was a hard-stated fact, but was more presuming than anything else. He might even have a disclaimer that says the committee has the final say and that the brackets are all of his suppositions. Nevertheless, I don't remember the last time he was wrong.

I've honestly thought all along that it "wouldn't be fair" to Union to send them west if they've earned the #1 seed just because Yale squeaks in - that's almost ruining the bracket's integrity (not to mention hurting attendance), depending on who else is placed in their regional. And yes, I'd say the same thing about BC, Minnesota, Quinnipiac, & Ferris. Earning a #1 seed should give you some weight with the brackets, IMO.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

If 5 ECAC teams make it, is it possible they'd move forward with a intraconference matchup of Yale vs. Union in round 1 in Bridgeport?

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

If Yale is a 4 and Union remains a 1, I would think BC would be heading to Bridgeport and Union to Worcester. Between Providence, Notheasten and Umass Lowell all being in the mix, 1 or 2 of them could end up in Worcester to help attendance. I think Yale getting in would ship Quinnipiac west before Union. Still alot of hockey to be played but I think a 1 seed puts Union's chance of staying east at about 80% and a 2 seed puts it at about 99%.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

Also, Union and RPI can really dampen Yale's hopes for an at-large bid with two wins for the Capital District this weekend. Yale would then likely have to win or at least be the runner-up in the ECAC tournament to get to the National Tourney. I hate to root against one of ECAC's own in the national picture, but Union's success is obviously more important to me than any other ECAC team.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

Will any losses in the ECAC tournament hurt Union's national ranking/pair wise ranking?

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

Has to be at least six to consider that.

Which is probably impossible (maybe RPI beating Yale in the final?).

And even with 6, you could still have 1/3, 2/4 in the two east regionals and the other two out in the west regionals.

The only choice is to get 9 in and force their hand. :)

Yes, especially if they were to be upset in the QF. That's not going to happen, but in the alternative universe where it does it would really hurt.
