Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

Congrats on the Cleary Cup and top seed, see you guys on Friday.

Going to Pepe's before Yale game. I will sit between my 2 kids one at Union and one who attends Yale and I will try to be neutral. It won't work.

So very proud of this team, not much more to say, but much more to do. Also very gratifying to see how many fans stayed after the game to pay tribute to these exceptional seniors.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

I feel lucky to be a fan of Union College Hockey. This team has been incredible the past four seasons:

2011 - Cleary Cup, NCAA Tourney Appearance
2012 - Cleary Cup, Whitelaw Cup, Frozen Four Appearance
2013 - Whitelaw Cup, NCAA Tourney Appearance (Elite 8)
2014 - Cleary Cup, NCAA Tourney Appearance...and hopefully more

I'm going to try to make the trip to Yale/Brown this weekend so I can catch the final regular season games before the ECAC Playoff and National Tourney.

Twenty-two years ago I would have never dreamed this could be possible. I also feel lucky. It has been an adventure to see how Union has developed over the years into one of the elite teams of the nation. Kudos to the coaches and the players.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

We need to continue winning.

Minnesota and BC are entrenched at the top. They could probably lose a bunch and still be #1 or #2 in the pairwise. #3 - #11 in the pairwise are much more sensitive to changes in the RPI. In other words its going to be easy for us to move down but hard (almost impossible) to move up.

Ferris State has 2 @ Alaska F and 2 @ Lake Superior. These are middle league teams ranked pw 30, 26 and will be easy pickings. Look for Ferris to sweep the next 4. No more gifts for us - loss to Benji State.
St. Cloud has 2 @ N. Dakota (Fighting Suix) and 2 @ Colorado College. St. Cloud will have their hands full with the Fighting Suix.
lots of others willing to move up

Yale is the defending National Champ, a class act, and they play very well at home and have only lost 2 at home since January 1.
Brown plays extremely well at home, only lost 2 at home since January 1. They ALWAYS play us tough and I watched parts of their game against BC. WOOOW !!!!.

We have to approach these two games like they are the beginning of the NCAA Tournament. These two games could determine our final seeds.

The Good News: As of right now we are 6-0-1 in February.
In February we scored 4.57 goals/game !!!!! For the entire year we are now ranked, as of today, second in the country behind BC in Offense. St. Clair is right behind us. http://www.collegehockeynews.com/stats/ QU is #5.
In February we gave up 2.268 goals/game. For the full year, we are now ranked, as of today, 8th in the country. QU is #2.

We are a great road team this year. 11-2-3.

Lets go Dutchmen ... lets finish this thing !!!!

Pretty amazing when I think back a few years ago and could never have imagined even one RS or other title for that matter. I was hoping that one day we might just make it to the ECAC final four.

I got to the TUC this afternoon and saw Utica play Albany. Jeremy Welsh and Kelly Zajac played for their respective teams. RB and some Union fans were there along with about 4 from the current team. Keith Kinkaid though recovered from injury, had the afternoon off after playing both Friday and Saturday. It was great to see and catch up briefly with the three of them. They looked and sounded fine and seem to be thriving as pros. Jeremy by the way had a nice goal in the 2-1 loss to Albany.

Get in line early at Pepe's especially on a Friday. Modern Apizza on State St. is a good alternative if Pepe's is too packed. We have also been pre-gaming at Maddens Gastropub at East St and Humphrey St. Good food and nice beers.

Thanks, Modern's a great place and yes we will hit Pepe's early (we've stood in that line before).

The Dutchmen pick up a solid recruit for 2015 out of the BCHL. 23 goals and 32 assists in 55 games as an 18 yr old. Will play his 19 yr old season again in the BCHL.

Brendan Taylor ‏@btay19 1h
Very excited to announce that I have committed to Union College for 2015, couldn't have done it without my friends and family #Dutchmen

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

That was a great weekend, certainly the best I've seen the team play this season and maybe the best I've ever seen a Union team play. The way this team can dictate the pace of a game is just breathtaking at times. The SLU game started kind of quietly but as the 1st period went along you could see the pace of the game getting faster & faster. By about the 12 minute mark the Saints started to look gassed and BOOM, two goals. More of the same in the 2nd period and the game was essentially over. Credit to SLU for not quitting in 3rd period and playing hard to the final horn without losing their cool - had to be a frustrating night, especially for Carey who is an amazing player. Great game by Carr, especially on senior night, and continue to love the play of Vecchione, who has to be one of the top rookies in the league IMO. I am also really starting to appreciate Gingras' game more & more. His passing last night was just incredible at times. It really looks like the game has mentally slowed down for him and he is able to take that extra second with the puck before he makes a play. He is going to be really terrific the next couple years all going well.

The ability of this team to play a tight checking, in-your-face style AND a high paced offensive style is something very new to my eyes as a Union fan, and gives the team different ways that they can win games. Union teams in even the recent past have had a pretty narrow style of play that everything has to go well in order to win, but this team is different. I don't know exactly how far this team can go this season, but the #3 ranking does not seem undeserved.

The Dutchmen pick up a solid recruit for 2015 out of the BCHL. 23 goals and 32 assists in 55 games as an 18 yr old. Will play his 19 yr old season again in the BCHL.
Nice to see that recruits will still come to Union after YOU KNOW WHAT .. thanks for the heads up QUAlum. Looks like a good get and here is a link to pretty nifty goal scored by Mr. Taylor. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbeobiG2vMQ

Brendan Taylor seems legit, we have some very good players on our roster from the BCHL: Bodie, Carr, Hatch, Vasaturo, and Henry.

This is Taylor's first real solid season in the BCHL in his 3 years there. The first two seasons we not that great but that was more likely due to the fact he was 16 and 17 in those seasons going against older and stronger players.

I think this past weekend there was "blood in the water" meaning that they got the "sense and smell" of a Cleary Cup which was within immediate reach. No one should underestimate how "hungry" this team is right now. These seniors are not finished with their careers yet. There is still "unfinished business".

For the seven games thus far in February - Union 4.571 av/gpg

Hi everyone,
I've been following this forum for a while and been following Union hockey for 9 years now, so I figured I'd join :)

This week end was the best hockey I've seen Union play in a while. Except for a few defensive mistakes in the third on saturday, it was a treat to watch. I hope this keeps going for a while. A Whitelaw would make this an amazing season for me.

Go U !

Welcome! This team has spoiled me too much. At this point a Whitelaw would be great, but I want...No, I NEED more than that.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

Like most older Union Fans, I could never have imagined the team doing this well these past 4 years. I never dreamed we would ever win a single Cleary Cup or even finish high enough to get a first round ECAC bye. We had been the league's doormat. The beams in our barn were the home to pigeons and bird dung, not banners. Sellouts were for concerts. Storied programs like Harvard and Cornell and Clarkson and SLU and Yale had barns with so many banners you would think their roofs would collapse. Each year we would serve as a punching bag for the IVY hoping that we could at least give them a good contest.

I hope this Union team reaches whatever goals they set for themselves and something tells me its higher than what they have achieved thus far. As far as my expectations ... they have been more than meet. With the loses from last year we were picked to finish somewhere from 4th to 8th and there were rumblings of a "rebuilding year". After our first 5 games, the injury riddled Dutchmen were 1-2-2 and I don't think many of us were thinking Cleary. The Dutchman did show "Guts". They were not going down without a fight. I saw the game at Harvard where they were down 2-0 and came back to win 4-2. The injured were returning to duty and the play keep improving. You could only hope that the upperclassmen could carry the team while the coaches worked with the freshmen to make them productive and bring them on-line as fast as possible. If the coaches succeeded we would have what we desperately needed, depth. :) +1

I know many of you are salivating over the possibility of bigger and better things. The Cleary to me represents the ECAC's best. When QU won it last year, there was no question, within the ECAC, they were the best. With this third Cleary we are up there with some of those prestigious storied programs that we have so admired and have tried to emulate. Its a great honor for us, the smallest school in DI ECAC hockey. And remember, we are still one of the new kids on the block.

RPI 84 85
Providence 64 83
BC 63 80
Quinnipiac 13
Dartmouth 06
Vermont 96
UNH 74

There is something else this team did. With that frozen 4 appearence in 2011/2012 we helped crack the ice for the ECAC that Yale and QU smashed into tiny pieces last year. I never thought I would ever read something like this:

"Yale won the conference's first NCAA Championship since Harvard in 1989. In-state rival Quinnipiac joined Yale in the all-ECAC title game. Union, the ECAC Tournament champions, upset Hockey East power Boston College in the first round of the national tournament. The impressive performance by the three ECAC teams in the 2013 NCAA Tournament was not lost on other league coaches at the annual media day last week in Lake Placid." "It's not the fact that Yale won the championship. It's how Union, Quinnipiac, and Yale dominated the national tournament. They didn't just go in and win it. It's the fashion they won it," said Cornell coach Mike Schafer. "As a coach in this conference for 19 years, I'm very proud to see the teams have success," added Schafer.

My plate is full. For me, this team has already exceeded my expectaions and anything more going forward is "icing on the cake". I am pretty sure, however, this team has expectations of themselves that far exceed mine

Its still going to be a wild ride ;)

The way Quinnipiac is playing, if Yale gets in you may see QU get bumped out west instead of Union.

Well said Dutchman... and who thought the freshmen would account for 75+ pts to date?
