Re: 2013-14 NHL Season - With a Wing and a Fehr

Johnny Boychuk in ambulance en route to hospital after taking a vicious hit by Max Pacioretty (that name rings bell) while he was crouched over near boards.

At first people thought the fans at the Bell Centre were booing Boychuk but they were actually booing Pacioretty. Boychuk got a very warm round of applause when he was wheeled off the ice.

Somebody's getting suspended.

Predators plane had to return to the airport after they winged a hawk on takeoff.

Re: 2013-14 NHL Season - With a Wing and a Fehr

11 shots in one game, and the Devils are only five points out of a Wild Card spot.

Now watch - for as much as the Eastern Conference has been maligned so far, an Eastern team will win the Cup. :p

Sounds wild that they would've winged a hawk with their jet on takeoff. I hope their stars aren't feeling blue about the delay.

You forgot the Ranger who was chasing the wild duck who was being attacked by a coyote while being buffeted by hurricane force winds.

but let's not get into a flame war.

A flame war would leave kings singing the blues.

Interesting series of tweets today
Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie 20h
NHL govs likely to get (14-15) cap projection from league when they meet early next week in California. Sounds like it may be around $70M.

Ray Ferraro ‏@rayferrarotsn 14m
1) @walsha @MattBarnaby3636 bob told us in 1990 that disclosing salaries would raise all -- was right -- said we would all make more than Brett hull who had just signed $1m a yr deal - was right - flawed at the end, but did south for disorganized pA

That certainly went against the "code" in regard to punching someone when they are down on the ice. And Thornton usually plays a pretty honest game out there. Very unlike him.

This is going poorly. Ericsson and Boychuck injured, Thornton getting suspended. This year has been dismal.

Ha! We win.

The Providence Bruins will be in Toronto tomorrow...

if that had happened in montreal, i have little doubt someone would be spending the night in a jail cell.

I'm just really tired of the need to fight after every good hit.

Not just referring to this incident.

Clean hit or not, the problem is when you knock out a one of a teams top forwards, it is asking for it in retaliation. This was Ericsson's 2nd hit to the head this year and then the knee to the head to Marchand kind of heated emotions on the ice. The B's have a number of players knocked out like Neeley's knee, Savard's career, and maybe Ericsson now, etc. If the Cooke's and Orpik's of the world are allowed to target players and knock them out with concussions and other injuries, it doesn't benefit the game or the league. Do you see Lucic or Thornton trying to knock out Crosby or Malkin like that ?

Orpik has a reputation for hits like that and if you allow such hits that cause injuries and concussions, then it can quickly deteriorate into what happen last night. A guy like Thornton will protect his team mates even if he is wrong to hit Orpik while he was down after causing him to fall to the ice from behind. It's an emotional game and I thought Bertuzzi's hit on Moore should have caused a more severe suspension when you end a guy's career.

Even a hit like that in college hockey is penalized even if it is a legal hit. Santini has been hit twice already for hard hits or Matheson. The number of concussions is alarming in any contact sport and if you want to end the number of injuries from concussions, then enforce the rule fairly and let players know, any intentional hit to injure someone, especially to the head, will not be tolerated. Maybe game suspension and 5 minute majors accessed or fines too. That will send the message and taken more seriously.

Sure you can body check but it has to be under more control to avoid injuries and other medical problems when you are done playing.

Thornton has usually followed the code and is remorseful for what happened last night but this what hockey has to deal with and I don't think Bettman or Shanahan will deal with it properly.

I didn't see anything wrong with the hit on Ericsson. He was out in open ice and he got destroyed because he was looking at the puck instead of what was in front of him. There was no blatant hit to the head. He just got smoked.
