Re: 2013-14 NHL Season - With a Wing and a Fehr
Clean hit or not, the problem is when you knock out a one of a teams top forwards, it is asking for it in retaliation. This was Ericsson's 2nd hit to the head this year and then the knee to the head to Marchand kind of heated emotions on the ice. The B's have a number of players knocked out like Neeley's knee, Savard's career, and maybe Ericsson now, etc. If the Cooke's and Orpik's of the world are allowed to target players and knock them out with concussions and other injuries, it doesn't benefit the game or the league. Do you see Lucic or Thornton trying to knock out Crosby or Malkin like that ?
Orpik has a reputation for hits like that and if you allow such hits that cause injuries and concussions, then it can quickly deteriorate into what happen last night. A guy like Thornton will protect his team mates even if he is wrong to hit Orpik while he was down after causing him to fall to the ice from behind. It's an emotional game and I thought Bertuzzi's hit on Moore should have caused a more severe suspension when you end a guy's career.
Even a hit like that in college hockey is penalized even if it is a legal hit. Santini has been hit twice already for hard hits or Matheson. The number of concussions is alarming in any contact sport and if you want to end the number of injuries from concussions, then enforce the rule fairly and let players know, any intentional hit to injure someone, especially to the head, will not be tolerated. Maybe game suspension and 5 minute majors accessed or fines too. That will send the message and taken more seriously.
Sure you can body check but it has to be under more control to avoid injuries and other medical problems when you are done playing.
Thornton has usually followed the code and is remorseful for what happened last night but this what hockey has to deal with and I don't think Bettman or Shanahan will deal with it properly.
