I think for the next debate, they would be wise to chum the water and use someone who is a bit more vicious than Kerry. Someone to bring out the attack dog in Obama rather than bore us all to death like Kerry would.

Maybe Howard Dean's available. Presidential time is a scarce commodity. On the one hand, not enough of it to participate in the security briefings in the days leading up to the anniversary of 9/11 (everyone knows rag head terrorists don't pay any attention to the calendar) and on the other, finding time to schedule "The View" and "The Pimp with a Limp." Gotta keep your priorities straight.

Romney was much better prepped than Obama anticipated, for sure. Someone posted an article about Rob Portman playing Obama in Romney's mock sessions, and supposedly he got Romney so fired up and annoyed that Romney couldn't even speak to him for several minutes after a practice session.

That's the kind of prep you need when you need to win a debate structured like last night's.

I have always felt that the level of intelligence displayed on this board is far above that of the general American public. (with a few notable exceptions) Has the showing in last night's debate actually changed anyone's mind about who they will vote for here? And if not-why should we expect that the performance in the debate would change anyone else's choice? Especially since a large percentage of America was busy watching something else or got the gist of what went on second hand from the various network news sources. I am not sure but i think many make too much of these kinds of things. 47% will vote one way and 45% will vote another way regardless and if given the choice would have been watching NFL football highlights instead. The other 8%-I'm not totally convinced they even exist. As usual just my 2¢:)

I'm still legitimately undecided. Not sure if I want to vote for Obama or stay home.

Remember, Obama made him all tingly in his man region four years ago :rolleyes:. I don't know why some are hootin' and hollerin' so much about this, as if it's a huge shock. Matthews is a partisan hack and has been for as long as I can remember.

I know. But even partisan hacks can maintain some semblance of composure while on the air. This was a complete meltdown.

It was O'Reilly-worthy.

One point Tweety Bird made though was salient: everybody who has been following the campaigns already knows the drill on Romney's biggest falsehoods -- not only are they reviewed and exposed as Pants on Fire but they've been repeatedly blown out of the water by rebuttals from all over the map. Why would Obama not simply block the obvious talking point and then launch sidewinders to blow the source away? He certainly was able to do that against McCain. This looked like Prevent Defense, and we all know what that does.

He has been for at least the last 6 years (MSNBC tenure)? Before that he attempted to inherit Jack Germond's mantel of the truth-telling curmudgeon, but he couldn't pull it off.

I think Scooby has a similar position as mine, in that, as a younger person we know for a fact that we are being left a huge bill by the previous generations and do not like it and want to change it.

I'll say this for Romney; he never seemed like a serious candidate to me before I watched the debate; but then, it's the first time I've watched him. He hasn't earned my vote, but he has earned my respect for coming out with confidence and clarity.
But you're right. I don't think there's anything that could tip the election any more.

The debate definitely convinced me more firmly that Romney is the wrong guy. It obviously also convinced a lot of conservatives more firmly that Obama is the wrong guy. Yes, Romney has been proven repeatedly to be a liar. I also felt that last night showed that he will give no respect to those who he believes stand in his way. Someone who is rude to a waiter, is just rude. Someone who bullies the debate moderator is just a bully. He saw Lehrer as someone beneath hinm who was in his way, so he walked right over him. A ****-poor quality in a head of state.

I was not super-impressed with Obama, but I felt that Romney showed more than ever before how very very terrible he would be as President.

Nail on the head. We're way past liberal bias here and up to our necks in advocacy. MCNBC can do whatever it wants, of course, and I watch mostly for the crepe hanging. I'm not real big on psychological explanations (way above my pay grade) but I'd guess you're right. And dragging His Failureness across the finish line is very important to their self-esteem. And the fact that His Wonderfulness is actually in a fight, with the possibility (however minimal) that the American people will send him back to facilitating food stamps for welfare queens in Chicago, is just unthinkable. A rare moment of candor.
