2012 Presidential Election Part III: October Surprise!

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part III: October Surprise!

Indiana is indeed firmly "Th-uh Sauth" (sic). My cousin and her husband live in the farm country around Ft. Wayne - serious Evangelical conservatives.

Ohio I think is a little different - there's the so-called "I-70 Corridor" and it's true that most people south of there are Kentucky or West Virginia at heart and in speech.

Don't know about Illinois, but given all the chatter back in 1861 about the southern half of Illinois joining up with the Confederacy, I assume (thereby making an *** out of 'u and 'me'), that it's similar.

Im from the Fort Wayne area but I cant say I ever witnessed to many evanagelical types. Im sure they exist but in the 20+ years I spent there I never really saw it. Fort Wayne is a heavily Catholic city (a ton of catholic churches including at one time like 5 or 6 within a few blocks of each other and 2 catholic high schools...used to be 3 a while back I think). There is a fair bit of amish in the area though. As for Illinois, I am actually currently at Southern Illinois Univeristy in Carbondale and Carbondale is a spot of blue in a sea of red. You get away from the college or that Carbondale-Marion corridor and you will definelty feel like its the deep south.

This is true of a lot of rural college towns. Twenty minutes in any direction from Ithaca and you're either in a lake or West Virginia.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part III: October Surprise!

I'm a bit shocked that Minnesota isn't more Protestant than that map shows.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part III: October Surprise!

See, another way I'm not a good Republican. No guns. Better go get me some of 'em I guess.

I don't have one either (besides hunting) but have been snooping around for a handgun.

Kepler

The WaPo has an article on Rt. 15 and where is the true boundary between North & South in VA.

The map shows only the predominant religion by county. If for instance the Lutheran counties are 70-80%, but the Catholic counties are still 30-40% Lutheran, then the state as a whole is far more Lutheran than it looks.

It also presents the optical illusion of displaying dirt and shrubs rather than population. Since many states have most of their population stacked in a few urban districts, those states display a wildly disproportionate weighting of their rural areas. That's what is behind the illusion of maps like this, for example:

That's what toss-up looks like in a national election.

Cayuga County NY going blue? Thanks for the laugh!

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part III: October Surprise!

The Klan was not the personification of white trash in those days. Much more "mainstream." Lots of people looked upon membership as like being in the Elks. And it was very active in all sorts of northern states. Membership was pretty much a cross section of Protestant America. Very influential, backing successful candidates on all levels. Guy by the name of Stephenson (sp) became a huge national deal leading the Klan in Indiana. His considerable influence waned a bit when he was convicted of raping and murdering a young woman. Not exactly helpful to his message. There's archival footage of a million Klansmen marching in Washington.

Is that how you justify your membership?:D:rolleyes:

So since it's only being done by Republicans, I take it you're now on board with the ID laws?

I'm fine with ID laws, just not ones passed three months before election day. For example Rhode Island did something similar, but its effective 2014 thus giving plenty of time for compliance. When the head of the PA senate declares that their voter ID law just gave the state to Romney, that should tell you all you need to know about their motivations.

Motor Voter?

Laugh while you can, monkey boy. Those are the actuals from 2004.
Strange things happen. Every once in a while a Kennedy loses an election.

BTW, would you mind asking the webmaster of TBRW to list Clarkson's undefeated season right under the 29-0-0??

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part III: October Surprise!

Motor Voter : Dems :: Voter ID : GOP

That makes no sense. Motor Voter allows more people to vote; Voter ID prevents people from voting. They are the opposite.

I will grant you that the intent behind them -- to win -- is the same. But if the only way your side can win is by actively preventing people from voting then Democratic Government: You're Doin' It Wrong.

It is my recollection that the Dems pushed Motor Voter. Since many states are a bit lax on who gets their drivers' licenses, it is conceivable that ineligible to vote people are getting registered to vote while getting the license.

Voter ID should at least ensure that only US Citizens are pulling the lever.

Ah yes, the "it's conceivable" argument again. It's so conceivable no one is getting busted for this ever-present and rampant transgression.
