2012 NFL Season

Re: 2012 NFL Season

I'm guessing you're a Vikings fan? Look, if this happened to the Jets, I would love it. But that wouldn't make it the right call. Maybe the one guy would have batted it down if he wasn't blatantly shoved out of the way by Tate. Seattle isn't crappy either. They lost a close one in week one at a good Arizona team and have now gone toe to toe with Dallas and GB. They have a pretty good defense and running game. It's not the end of the world--that's the scary part. Unless a deal is reached, this is only the beginning.

Oh I understand the crappy call part, I was just finding humor in the fact that the media and of course Packer fans think this is the ending of Western Civilization as we know it. Seattle's D is very good but you have to admit the rookie QB is meh, they look like a running team that accidentally completes a pass every so often.

Re: 2012 NFL Season

According to the release, the play could have been overturned because in the endzone simultaneous catch can be overturned in replay. .

So let me ask you this, given this info and knowing that the replay officials are not replacement and are indeed the "normal" replay officials why do you think they did not overturn such a "blatantly obvious" call? Should they get blame as well?

The replay people are not replacements, but the person that ultimately makes the call is the referee on the field...am I wrong about that? The people in the booth don't ultimately make the call, thats the whole point of "going under the hood."

Re: 2012 NFL Season

The regular refs don't make that PI call, either. When a Hail Mary is put up, all eyes are on the ball in the air...

This is why coaches tell players to knock it down. If Green Bay knocks the ball down, they win. Instead someones ego got the best of him and he tried to intercept the pass (probably a contract incentive) and it cost them the game.

Re: 2012 NFL Season

Ya know, if the players are so annoyed with the NFL about this (like Aaron Rodgers and other teams guys who seem butthurt) no one is stopping you from quitting. If you dont like the way the NFL conducts business join a different league...or just shut up and play the game.

In that moment, you really think this was an ego thing? Guy made a play. Not his fault that the refs got it wrong.

As to knocking down the ball, yes, it's the preferred method, but it doesn't always work...

The HD version won't link for some reason.

Yeah, but the ref didn't get it wrong necessarily. The way the rule reads, simultaneous catch is subjective. Just like most rules in the NFL.

They all have big egos. Catching that ball on that play instead of following what his coaches have told him a million times amounts to arrogance.

Of course we have also seen a TD when the guy does the right thing and bats the ball down. So either way, you could still get beat.

He might not be great, but he's only a rookie and has done a good job of making enough plays/not making costly mistakes. The fact that some think GB should have won by more points is irrelevant to me. This is the NFL. You win on the road by whatever means necessary. They were favored by 3.5 and won the game by five.

I don't agree with that. This one was way more blatant than any run of the mill Hail Mary tussle. And why would they have to look at the ball in the air?

If all the players just shut up and didn't say anything, we'd be stuck with these bum officials. I don't see a problem with them voicing their displeasure. It's not their fault there's a dispute between the NFL and refs. It's not like they're speaking out against something they agreed to in the CBA.

Re: 2012 NFL Season

I'm a Packer fan and I don't see it as the "end of the world." 13 games to go and if our offense doesn't get a lot better, this season is toast anyway. If something like this happens in January, I'll have a different take on it.

It's telling that the ones taking the most glee from this are by and large, Vikings fans. I'm not saying that you can't or shouldn't, but please spare us the "Many of you would prefer to see the Gophers lose than see your own team win" garbage that many of you toss out there as some sort of indictment of character during the college hockey season.

We all want to see our rivals lose. Gary Andersen's (missed) field goal and Bert's INT remain etched in my memory. Happy memories... :)

But they're nowhere near the Super Bowls (2 in my adult lifetime) that I've gotten to witness (albeit on TV) my team win.

Just don't see how anyone can claim with a straight face (besides Dirty, of course) that Packer fans or players are reacting any differently than anyone else would. That was a joke last night and we all saw it. Some just thought is was funnier than others.

It was a joke. No question about it. But, I lost sympathy for anyone crying about NFL officiating when Drew Pearson pushed off. That was about 36 years ago now.

Seriously? You saw the replay right?

What's subjective about that?

I haven't heard one, not one sports person on TV or radio even come close to saying that was a 50:50 ball. No players, no former coaches, no radio talk show hosts, no one.

Just Pete Carroll, Golden Taint and... you?

EDIT: Oh yeah, and the league.

I get that. Michael Irvin used to get away with the push off turns into a pass interference call on Terrell Buckley every goddam time we played them in the early nineties - just like that fly route last night where Shields got called. It happens. It never went to replay though to be confirmed.

The 'common man' today on KFAN said it was a 50:50 ball and that it was the refs judgement. (of course it was probably all schtick but still...)
