2012 NFL Season

Re: 2012 NFL Season

I've wondered about this. Why aren't the refs from D-1 major conferences? Is there some no-compete clause where the D-1 guys can't do these games?
I've only heard passing reference that there were 2 scenarios keeping D1 refs away. 1) Conferences didn't allow them to leave, and 2) the refs themselves didn't want to go in some cases.

Re: 2012 NFL Season

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2726072The NFL introduced the K-Balls [thirteen] years ago (changed number is St. Clown's) after the competition committee decided teams were abusing their privileges and taking unusual measures to condition balls so they would fly higher and travel farther.

Kickers and punters were accused of using strange methods to soften the leather, spread the seams and inflate the bladder. Rumors included instances of balls being put in microwave ovens, dryers and saunas.

"The reason this was put in place was to prevent teams from doctoring balls for kicking," league spokesman Greg Aiello said.

So the night before a game, 12 balls marked with a "K" are delivered straight from the manufacturer, Wilson Sporting Goods, to the officials. Two hours before the game, a representative from each team can prepare the balls by rubbing them down and brushing them off. An official then checks the air pressure, puts the balls in a bag and subs them in on kicks.

Nothing says NFL game like a good rub down of the balls before the game.

Let me say that the NFL is right about the real refs. They are not full time employees. And if the NFL wanted them to be, these guys wouldn't give up their other jobs (most of them make a ton of cash elsewhere). So, I have no problem with the NFLs stance...until it's clear that there's a major issue. We've obviously reached that point. I really think Goodell and company expected these replacement refs to come in and do a great job. Ya, maybe if you got replacement refs from say, the SEC. But not when you get them from the lingerie league.

Major issue? This is something I posted elsewhere:

"Are the fans buying tickets and filling stadiums? Yes. Are they tuning in and are ad revenues on TV strong? Yes, and yes. Is there buzz about the NFL every morning after a game? Yes. So, what's the problem for the NFL? "

reputation. They are insulting all of us with this pathetic attempt at refereeing the games.

In other news, the official NFL statement:
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap10...seahawks-touchdown?module=HP11_headline_stack
In Monday's game between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks, Seattle faced a 4th-and-10 from the Green Bay 24 with eight seconds remaining in the game.

Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson threw a pass into the end zone. Several players, including Seattle wide receiver Golden Tate and Green Bay safety M.D. Jennings, jumped into the air in an attempt to catch the ball.

While the ball is in the air, Tate can be seen shoving Green Bay cornerback Sam Shields to the ground. This should have been a penalty for offensive pass interference, which would have ended the game. It was not called and is not reviewable in instant replay.

When the players hit the ground in the end zone, the officials determined that both Tate and Jennings had possession of the ball. Under the rule for simultaneous catch, the ball belongs to Tate, the offensive player. The result of the play was a touchdown.

Replay Official Howard Slavin stopped the game for an instant replay review. The aspects of the play that were reviewable included if the ball hit the ground and WHO had possession of the ball. In the end zone, a ruling of a simultaneous catch is reviewable. That is not the case in the field of play, only in the end zone.

Referee Wayne Elliott determined that no indisputable visual evidence existed to overturn the call on the field, and as a result, the on-field ruling of touchdown stood. The NFL Officiating Department reviewed the video today and supports the decision not to overturn the on-field ruling following the instant replay review.

The result of the game is final.

Applicable rules to the play are as follows:

A player (or players) jumping in the air has not legally gained possession of the ball until he satisfies the elements of a catch listed here.

Rule 8, Section 1, Article 3 of the NFL Rule Book defines a catch:

A forward pass is complete (by the offense) or intercepted (by the defense) if a player, who is inbounds:

(a) secures control of the ball in his hands or arms prior to the ball touching the ground; and
(b) touches the ground inbounds with both feet or with any part of his body other than his hands; and
(c) maintains control of the ball long enough, after (a) and (b) have been fulfilled, to enable him to perform any act common to the game (i.e., maintaining control long enough to pitch it, pass it, advance with it, or avoid or ward off an opponent, etc.).
When a player (or players) is going to the ground in the attempt to catch a pass, Rule 8, Section 1, Article 3, Item 1 states:

Player Going to the Ground. If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without contact by an opponent), he must maintain control of the ball throughout the process of contacting the ground, whether in the field of play or the end zone. If he loses control of the ball, and the ball touches the ground before he regains control, the pass is incomplete. If he regains control prior to the ball touching the ground, the pass is complete.

Rule 8, Section 1, Article 3, Item 5 states:

Simultaneous Catch. If a pass is caught simultaneously by two eligible opponents, and both players retain it, the ball belongs to the passers. It is not a simultaneous catch if a player gains control first and an opponent subsequently gains joint control. If the ball is muffed after simultaneous touching by two such players, all the players of the passing team become eligible to catch the loose ball.

Re: 2012 NFL Season

Well, nice of them to admit that the PI was a missed call, at least.

Re: 2012 NFL Season

The guy that calls the TD last night had high school and Jr high school experience from what I hear on ESPN

How did they choose the refs? I understand most college guys didn't go because their conferences wouldn't let them back, but I don't understand how the high school refs were selected. Were they camps they showed up at or did they know someone within the league who gave them a referral?

I had heard that the big D1 conferences said if you leave, you aren't coming back...

Plus I imagine if you ever want to be an NFL ref, you don't want to **** of the union, so the only guys taking the replacement jobs are ones that never really had a chance to begin with.

They did convince a number of the major college guys in 2001 when this happened (The NFL set up some national level officiating camps and claimed that if you took part, you were required to cross a picket line/lockout) and they all came back to find out they lost their jobs in college.

Re: 2012 NFL Season

Can you imagine if a game like Sunday/Monday night ends like that in Philly? And the call goes against the Eagles?

Hardly. Maybe the Green Bay db should have swatted the ball down instead of trying to pick it off or maybe GB should have scored more points on a crappy Seattle team and they wouldn't have been put in that situation. Also I love how everyone has forgotten all the blown calls that the "real" refs make week in and week out. This is hardly the end of the world like Packer fans and the media claim it to be, in fact I think it's awesome.

Go replacement officials!

I'm guessing you're a Vikings fan? Look, if this happened to the Jets, I would love it. But that wouldn't make it the right call. Maybe the one guy would have batted it down if he wasn't blatantly shoved out of the way by Tate. Seattle isn't crappy either. They lost a close one in week one at a good Arizona team and have now gone toe to toe with Dallas and GB. They have a pretty good defense and running game. It's not the end of the world--that's the scary part. Unless a deal is reached, this is only the beginning.

Re: 2012 NFL Season

The real refs never called PI on a hail Mary anyway. But, one can definitely argue that it wasn't a spontaneous catch. Green Bay was indeed screwed.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Re: 2012 NFL Season

The "real" ref in the booth at the end of the game even said that they would never call that PI in that situation
The "real" ref that sits in on NBC games said he would have called it...too blatant. And I'm sorry that you think this is great, that just makes you an a hole. "Real" refs make mistakes but I don't seem them making this one, and at the very least we wouldn't have seen 2 refs make different calls on the field. According to the release, the play could have been overturned because in the endzone simultaneous catch can be overturned in replay. As for the contention that the Packers could have prevented this by not sucking the entire first half, of course that is true, but that doesn't change the fact that the refs *** up and cost the Packers a win. Things could have gone differently if the packers don't settle for 2 field goals or give up 8 sacks, but that doesn't mean the NFL gets a pass on ***** up a game and letting the referee situation get to this point. In all honesty, I would be complaining just as much if the roles were reversed last night. This isn't about my favorite team losing, this is about the NFL letting it get to this point.

Drew Pearson pushed off. And that happened in a playoff game. I honestly doubt Roger cares.
